Time 1h25m

Yield 9 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup all-purpose flour (see Cook's Note)
1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
8 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces, at room temperature
Nonstick cooking spray, for the pan
4 apples, peeled, cored and chopped (about 5 1/2 cups)
One 14.5-ounce box gingerbread cake mix
1 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted
Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Steps:

  • For the crumb topping: Mix the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl. Rub the butter into the mixture with your fingers until it is no longer floury and crumbs form; clump them about the size of large peas. Freeze until firm, at least 10 minutes before using.
  • For the dump cake: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an 8-by-8-inch cake pan with cooking spray.
  • Fill the prepared pan with the apples and evenly top with the cake mix. Drizzle the melted butter over the top, trying to cover as much of the mix as possible. Evenly sprinkle with the crumb topping. Bake until set and the top is golden brown, about 1 hour 10 minutes.

APPLE GINGERBREAD SKILLET CAKE

Apple Gingerbread Skillet Cake image

This gingerbread recipe came from my grandmother, and we always ate it with warm applesauce. I adapted it into a one-pan dessert by layering the apples around the bottom of a cast-iron skillet and topping them with the gingerbread batter. The skillet creates a wonderfully thick crust on the gingerbread. -Mary M. Leverette, Columbia, South Carolina

What is a dump cake?

A dump cake is a type of dessert that involves dumping ingredients into a pan and baking them. The name "dump cake" comes from the fact that all the ingredients are mixed together in a haphazard fashion before being baked. Unlike traditional cakes, dump cakes don't require precise mixing or measuring, making them easy to prepare.

What are the ingredients in an apple gingerbread dump cake?

The ingredients in an apple gingerbread dump cake include gingerbread cake mix, apple pie filling, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The gingerbread cake mix provides the base of the cake and is enhanced by the warm spices. Apple pie filling is used to add texture and flavor, while butter is melted on top of the cake to create a moist and tender texture.

Dump cakes are a popular type of dessert that are easy to make and require little preparation. Apple gingerbread dump cake is a variation of the classic dump cakes recipe, combining the comforting flavors of apple and gingerbread. To make the perfect apple gingerbread dump cake, it is essential to follow certain valuable tips. In this article, we will provide you with tips that will help you make a delicious apple gingerbread dump cake.

Tips for Making Apple Gingerbread Dump Cake

1. Choose the Right Apples
The choice of apples can have a significant impact on the taste and texture of your apple gingerbread dump cake. Apples that are too tart or too sweet can overpower the gingerbread flavor. It is best to use sweet apples such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Pink Lady. These apples have a sweet and juicy flavor that complements the gingerbread taste. It is also essential to ensure that the apples are not overripe as they can turn mushy when baked.
2. Properly Prepare the Gingerbread Mix
The gingerbread mix is a crucial component of the recipe as it provides the cake with the characteristic flavor. To prepare the gingerbread mix, it is essential to follow the recipe and measure the ingredients accurately. Overmixing the batter can result in a tough texture, so it is best to mix the ingredients until they are just combined. Sift the dry ingredients to remove any clumps and aerate the batter.
3. Use Quality Spices
Spices such as cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg are key ingredients in gingerbread recipes. It is essential to use good quality spices as they provide the cake with a rich and flavorful taste. Freshly grated spices have a more potent flavor compared to their pre-ground counterparts. If using pre-ground spices, ensure they are still fresh, and their aromatic properties have not diminished. To maintain the flavor of the spices, store them in an airtight container away from sunlight.
4. Mix Apples and Gingerbread Mix Properly
When combining the apples and gingerbread mix, it is important to ensure that the two are well incorporated. This will ensure that the cake has a uniform texture and taste. Gently fold in the apple chunks into the gingerbread mix to avoid damaging the apple's texture. Overmixing the apples and gingerbread mix can result in a tough and chewy cake.
5. Add Toppings for Extra Flavor
Toppings can provide an extra burst of flavors to your apple gingerbread dump cake. After spreading the gingerbread mix on top of the apple chunks, sprinkle brown sugar, oatmeal, and chopped nuts on top of the mix. These toppings will caramelize during the baking, providing a crunchy and sweet texture to the cake. You can also add caramel or whipped cream on top of the cake when serving for added flavor.
6. Bake the Cake Until Golden Brown
Baking the cake until it is golden brown is essential for a perfect apple gingerbread dump cake. Ensure that the oven is preheated to the right temperature and that the cake is baked accordingly to the recipe directions. Overbaking the cake can result in a dry and crumbly texture, while underbaking can cause the cake to be gooey and undercooked.

Conclusion

Making a perfect apple gingerbread dump cake requires attention to detail and following the recipe's instructions. By using the right apples, properly preparing the gingerbread mix, using quality spices, mixing the apples and gingerbread mix well, adding toppings, and baking the cake until golden brown, you can create a delicious dessert that will impress your family and guests.
