Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 16

5 granny smith apples (the more spots, the better!), peeled, cored and diced
6 Tablespoons butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
1 teaspoon corn starch
2 Tablespoons warm water
----------------------
6 large croissants, chopped into chunks (these are pre-made croissants that I pick up at my local grocery store bakery section, not croissant dough).
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup cinnamon apple sauce (or 1/2 cup apple butter)
3 eggs, lightly beaten
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
----------------------
3/4 cup powdered sugar
4 Tablespoons Heavy Cream

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375*F In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar and stir until incorporated. Add cinnamon and nutmeg, mix well. Add diced apples and stir to coat. Simmer mixture for 5 minutes or until apples are soft and to the desired texture. I recommend tasting one to see if it's soft enough. In a small bowl combine cornstarch and water. Mix well then add cornstarch mixture to apples and stir. Remove from heat and set aside. In a 9x13 casserole dish, lay out croissant pieces, spreading out so they cover the bottom of the pan. Top croissants with apple mixture. Spreading evenly over croissants. In a separate bowl combine heavy cream, apple butter (or apple sauce), eggs and cinnamon. Mix well. Pour apple butter mixture over croissants and apples. Drizzle over the top to cover apples. Bake for 25 minutes. When casserole is removed from oven, allow to sit for 5 minutes. While casserole is cooking, in a small bowl combine heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar 1/4 cup at a time. Add more heavy cream 1/2 teaspoon at a time if needed. Mixture should be thick but should drip from spoon when held in air. Drizzle casserole with icing and serve immediately.

Apple fritter breakfast casserole is a mouth-watering recipe that's perfect for entertaining or for a special breakfast with family and friends. The great thing about this dish is that it can easily be made the night before and then popped into the oven the next morning. It's a dish that's sure to impress everyone at the table.

Tip 1: Choosing the Right Apples

When making an apple fritter breakfast casserole, it's important to choose the right type of apples. Apples that are too sweet or too tart can drastically affect the overall taste of the dish. Granny Smith apples are the best choice for this recipe because they're tart and hold up well when cooked. They also won't turn to mush when baked in the casserole.

Tip 2: Don't Overdo the Sugar

One of the biggest mistakes people make when making an apple fritter breakfast casserole is adding too much sugar. While the dish is meant to be sweet, you don't want it to taste like dessert. A good rule of thumb is to use just enough sugar to enhance the flavor of the apples and the cinnamon. Too much sugar will overpower the dish and make it too rich.

Tip 3: Use High-Quality Bread

The bread used in the apple fritter breakfast casserole is important. It's the base of the dish, and you want it to be the right consistency and flavor. When choosing bread for this recipe, opt for a high-quality brioche or challah bread. These types of bread are soft, luxurious, and have a slightly sweet taste that complements the apples and cinnamon perfectly.

Tip 4: Use a Good-Quality Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a key ingredient in this recipe, and it's important to use a good-quality cinnamon. Ground cinnamon loses its potency over time, so make sure to use a fresh batch. If you can, opt for freshly grated cinnamon sticks. These have a more intense flavor and aroma, and they're worth the extra effort.

Tip 5: Let the Casserole Rest Before Serving

Once the apple fritter breakfast casserole has finished baking, it's important to let it rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the casserole to set and makes it easier to slice and serve. If you cut into the casserole right away, it may fall apart and look messy.

Tip 6: Add a Crunchy Topping

To add some texture to the dish, consider adding a crunchy topping to the apple fritter breakfast casserole. This can be achieved by sprinkling chopped nuts, such as pecans or almonds, on top of the casserole before baking. Alternatively, you can make a streusel topping with butter, flour, and brown sugar, and sprinkle it over the casserole before baking.

Tip 7: Serve with Maple Syrup and Whipped Cream

The finishing touches on the apple fritter breakfast casserole include serving it with maple syrup and whipped cream. The maple syrup adds sweetness and complements the cinnamon and apples, while the whipped cream adds a light, creamy texture. If you want to take it up a notch, consider adding a drizzle of caramel sauce over the top of the whipped cream.

Conclusion:

Making an apple fritter breakfast casserole is easy with the right tips and techniques. By using high-quality ingredients, letting the casserole rest, and adding a crunchy topping, you can create a delicious breakfast that's perfect for any occasion. Serve with maple syrup and whipped cream and watch as your guests go back for seconds!
