Number Of Ingredients 9

5 tablespoons softened butter
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
¼ cup chopped toasted pecans or walnuts
4 apples (any variety but Red Delicious) peeled, halved, and cored, a thin sliver cut off bottoms so apples sit flat
1 (15 ounce) container 9-inch pie crusts

  • Mix 3 Tbs. of butter, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon and all the nuts in a small bowl. Spoon a portion of the mixture into each hollowed-out apple core.

Pulling on sides of dough to straighten rounded edges, roll it into an approximate 12-inch square, then cut the dough into four 6-inch squares; brush the perimeter of each square with egg white. Set an apple half on each square. Bring up the 4 corners of dough around the apple and pinch edges to seal. Place on a large (at least 18- by 12-inch) parchment-covered baking dish. CHEF JOHN'S APPLE DUMPLINGS

Chef John's Apple Dumplings image

This is one of America's oldest desserts. The flavor profile is almost identical to an apple pie, but instead of having a bunch of slices about, we have one beautifully roasted, tender, sweet apple inside--which while still covered in the same crust we use for a pie, is far superior because we basted and baked it with a sugar sauce. I highly recommend these get served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Time 1h30m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 teaspoon butter, or as needed
1 ½ cups packed light brown sugar
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup cold water
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 small Honeycrisp apples
1 recipe prepared pie crust dough
4 teaspoons butter

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Butter a baking dish.
  • Combine brown sugar, 3 tablespoons butter, and water in a small pot over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, and boil until all sugar is dissolved. Turn off heat and swirl pot gently to combine. Reserve sauce until needed.
  • Stir sugar and cinnamon together in a small bowl. Core the unpeeled apples.
  • Divide pie dough into 4 portions. Roll out on a lightly floured surface into 4 circles about 1/8-inch thick and 7 inches in diameter, or large enough to fully wrap an apple.
  • Place apples in the center of each round of dough. Spoon about 3 teaspoons of cinnamon sugar into the apple cores; fill each hole with a teaspoon of butter.
  • Wrap each apple up in pie dough, sealing the dough together at the top. Be careful not to pull and stretch it too tightly around the apple as you wrap, or it might break apart when it bakes; brush lightly with water if dough won't stick together. Even out the top and trim off any excess; shape into decorative leaves if desired.
  • Place wrapped apples seam-side up into the buttered baking dish. Ladle some sauce over each to cover completely.
  • Bake in the preheated oven, basting with sauce occasionally, until pastry is browned and cooked through and apples are tender, 50 to 60 minutes. Remove from the oven and baste with more sauce. Serve warm.

Apple Dumplings With Rich Cinnamon Sauce image

From USA Weekend. I haven't tried this one yet, but it sounds like a wonderful dessert, especially for fall. USA Weekend recommends NOT using Golden Delicious apples for this recipe. This is definitely a dessert for special occasions; it's somewhat involved. :)

OLD-FASHIONED APPLE DUMPLINGS

These are the ones my grandmother used to make: warm, flaky, apple-y sweet and drizzled with a sauce that bakes right with them. These are not difficult to make, just a little time-consuming. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.

Apple Dumplings with Red Hots Cinnamon Sauce Recipes: A Sweet and Spicy Delight

The History of Apple Dumplings
Apple dumplings are a classic American dessert that dates back to the early 1800s. They were originally made by wrapping slices of apple in a soft dough and baking them in a buttery syrup. Over time, the recipe evolved to include spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, and variations included stuffing the apple with raisins or nuts. Today, apple dumplings come in all shapes and sizes, and the addition of a spicy cinnamon sauce takes this dessert to a whole new level.
The Ingredients
To make apple dumplings with red hots cinnamon sauce, you’ll need a few key ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need to gather:
  1. Apples: Choose firm apples that hold their shape when baked. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Jonathan apples work well.
  2. Pie crust: You can make your own pie crust from scratch, or opt for store-bought. Just make sure it’s a high-quality brand that’s easy to work with.
  3. Brown sugar: This adds a rich sweetness to the apple filling.
  4. Cinnamon and nutmeg: These warm spices are the perfect complement to the sweetness of the apples.
  5. Butter: Provides a rich, buttery flavor and moisture to the apple filling and crust.
  6. Red hots candy: These small, cinnamon-flavored candies are what give the sauce its signature spicy kick.
  7. Heavy cream: Used to create a creamy, decadent sauce.
The Preparation
To prepare the apple dumplings, start by peeling and coring the apples. Cut them into quarters and set aside. Roll the pie crust out on a floured surface and cut it into 4 equal squares. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spoon the mixture onto the center of each square of pie crust, leaving a small border around the edges. Place a quarter of an apple on top of the sugar mixture, and add a small pat of butter on top of the apple. Next, fold the corners of the pie crust up around the apple, pinching the edges together to seal. Place the dumplings in a baking dish and brush the tops with melted butter. Bake at 375 degrees until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender, about 40 minutes. While the dumplings are baking, prepare the red hots cinnamon sauce. In a saucepan, combine the red hots candy with heavy cream. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until the candies have melted and the sauce is smooth and creamy.
The Serving
Serve the apple dumplings warm, drizzled with the spicy red hots cinnamon sauce. Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
The Variation
If you’re feeling adventurous, try adding chopped pecans or dried cranberries to the brown sugar mixture. Or, substitute the red hots candy for a splash of apple cider vinegar, which gives the sauce a tangy kick. Have fun experimenting with different flavor combinations until you find your perfect apple dumpling recipe.

Apple Dumplings with Red Hots Cinnamon Sauce: Tips and Tricks

Making apple dumplings can be quite simple and fun, especially when you pair them with a delicious red hots cinnamon sauce. This dessert is perfect for the fall season, with its warm and comforting flavors. Here are some valuable tips that can help you make the best apple dumplings with red hots cinnamon sauce.
The Apples
The type of apple you use to make your dumplings can make a huge difference in the final product. You want an apple that will hold up well and not turn to mush when cooked. Granny Smith apples are commonly used for baking because of their tart tartness, but Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Rome apples are also great choices.
The Dough
The dough is what makes or breaks the apple dumpling. You want a dough that is crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. When making the dough, be sure to use cold butter and ice-cold water, this will help produce the flakiest crust possible. You can also add a touch of apple cider vinegar to help tenderize the dough.
The Filling
To make the filling, consider using a combination of brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. The brown sugar adds sweetness while the cinnamon gives the filling that classic apple pie flavor. Don't skimp on the butter, as it helps to create a creamy and flavorful filling that complements the crispness of the dumpling crust.
The Assembly
When assembling the dumplings, it's important to ensure that they're sealed tightly to prevent any filling from leaking out during the baking process. Use a pastry brush or your fingers to moisten the edges of the dough before folding it over the apple. Use a fork to press the edges together, creating a tight seal. If any filling leaks out during baking, it can turn to caramel and create a deliciously sticky and sweet coating around the dumpling.
The Red Hots Cinnamon Sauce
The cinnamon sauce is the perfect complement to the apple dumplings. To make it, place red hots candies and water in a saucepan and melt over low heat until the candy is dissolved. Then, add in cinnamon and butter, stirring until the butter is melted and the sauce is smooth. Take care not to overcook the sauce, as it can thicken and become sticky.
Tips for Serving
To serve the apple dumplings, top them with a generous pour of the red hots cinnamon sauce while they're still warm. You can also add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream on top for added decadence!
Storing and Reheating
If you have any leftovers, be sure to store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When ready to reheat, warm the dumplings in the oven at 350F for 10-15 minutes, until heated through. The red hots cinnamon sauce can be reheated on the stovetop over low heat until smooth and warm.
Final Thoughts
Making apple dumplings with red hots cinnamon sauce can be a fun and rewarding experience. Be sure to use the freshest and best-quality ingredients possible, and don't be afraid to experiment with different types of apples or add-ins to the filling. With a little practice, you'll be able to create the perfect apple dumpling that will have everyone asking for seconds!
