Number Of Ingredients 12

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon kosher salt
2/3 cup all-vegetable shortening
5-7 tablespoons cold water
2 cups water
1 cup granulated sugar
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
6-8 medium sized tart apples
1/2 cup sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
6-8 tablespoons unsalted butter

Steps:

  • Pastry: In a large mixing bowl, sift flour and salt together. Cut in shortening with a pastry cutter or two knives in opposite directions until pieces are the size of small peas. Sprinkle a few tablespoons of water over mixture and gently toss with a fork. Repeat with more water until mixture is all moistened. Form into a ball. Flatten pastry dough on a lightly floured surface. Roll out to a little less than 1/8-inch thick and cut into 7-inch squares.
  • Syrup: Prepare the syrup by bringing 2 cups water, 1 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons butter and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Reduce to medium-low heat and let simmer until reduced to a thick enough syrup to lightly coat the back of a spoon.

Bring opposite points of pastry up over the apple. Overlap, moisten with water and seal. Carefully lift the pastry-wrapped apple and place it in the prepared baking dish. Repeat with remaining apples, pastry squares, cinnamon sugar mixture and butter.
  • Pour hot syrup evenly over the tops and around the dumplings.

  • Serve warm with the hot syrup that's in the bottom of the baking dish and ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon coarse salt
2 cups sugar
6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 large egg, plus 1 large egg yolk
1 1/2 tablespoons whole milk
4 cups apple cider
Creme fraiche, for serving

Steps:

  • Sift flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a medium bowl; set aside. Stir together sugar and 3/4 cup water in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook, without stirring, until sugar begins to melt and turn light amber, about 14 minutes. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until sugar has melted and mixture turns medium amber, about 2 minutes more.
  • Meanwhile, work butter into the flour mixture using your fingers or a pastry blender until flour is incorporated but mixture is still crumbly. Whisk together egg, egg yolk, and milk in a medium bowl. Form a well in the center of flour mixture; pour in egg mixture. Stir gently with a fork until combined.
  • Remove sugar mixture from heat; slowly whisk in cider. Return to heat; bring to a simmer. Using your hands or a small spoon, divide the dough evenly into 12 pieces, and roll into balls about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Carefully drop 6 balls of dough into the simmering cider syrup. Cook, turning once or twice to coat fully, until dumplings have tripled in size and are deep golden brown, about 20 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer dumplings to a platter, and cover. Repeat with remaining balls of dough. Divide dumplings among 6 bowls, and drizzle with the remaining cider syrup. Serve with creme fraiche.

Apple Dumplings with Cinnamon Syrup Recipes

Apple dumplings are a timeless and classic dessert that has been enjoyed for decades. This pastry is loved by many because of its delicious cinnamon filling that pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the apple. There are many variations of the dessert, including those made with crust, pie dough, and puff pastry. However, the most favored type of apple dumpling recipe is one that is served with a warm and comforting cinnamon syrup.

The Origins of Apple Dumplings with Cinnamon Syrup Recipes

Although the origins of the apple dumpling are unknown, it is believed that it originated in the northeastern United States. The recipe was passed down orally from generation to generation and has since made its way into various cookbooks and recipes websites. As time went on, the original recipe evolved and was expanded to include a cinnamon syrup, which helped to highlight the natural sweetness of the apple and provide contrast to its tender texture.

The Perfect Pairing: Apples and Cinnamon

The combination of apples and cinnamon is a favorite among many individuals, and it is not hard to see why. Apples have a distinct sweetness that is contrasted perfectly with the spicy undertones of cinnamon. The addition of cinnamon syrup to apple dumplings gives the dish an added level of warmth and depth of flavor that amplifies the overall experience of the dessert. This pairing is especially popular during the autumn months, when apples are freshly harvested and are at their peak ripeness, making for a memorable dessert that is reminiscent of the season.

The Ingredients of an Apple Dumpling with Cinnamon Syrup Recipe

The recipe for apple dumplings with cinnamon syrup is fairly simple, and requires just a few ingredients to make. The main ingredient, of course, is the apple, which can be any variety that is particularly sweet and juicy. Other ingredients that are commonly used in a recipe for apple dumplings with cinnamon syrup include sugar, cinnamon, butter, flour, salt, baking powder, and milk. The cinnamon syrup is made using cinnamon, sugar, and water, which are simmered together to create a thick and flavorful syrup that can be poured over the entire dessert.

The Cooking Process for Apple Dumplings with Cinnamon Syrup Recipes

Making apple dumplings with cinnamon syrup requires a bit of patience and attention to detail, but the end result is worth the effort. The first step is to prepare the apple by peeling it and removing the core. Once the apple has been prepared, it is placed onto a rolled-out pastry sheet and filled with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. The pastry is then wrapped tightly around the apple, and the excess dough is cut away. The apple dumpling is then placed in a baking dish and brushed with melted butter before being baked in the oven for 45 minutes to an hour. While the dumpling is baking, the cinnamon syrup ingredients are simmered together until a thick syrup is formed. Once the apple dumpling has been removed from the oven and allowed to cool, the cinnamon syrup is poured over the top of the pastry, infusing it with a sweet, spicy flavor that perfectly complements the apple filling.

Serving Apple Dumplings with Cinnamon Syrup Recipes

Apple dumplings with cinnamon syrup are best served warm, and can be accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. The addition of these toppings adds an extra level of richness and creaminess to the dessert, making for an indulgent and satisfying treat. While apple dumplings with cinnamon syrup are commonly served as a dessert, they can also be enjoyed for breakfast or brunch, and they have become a favorite among families who enjoy baked goods that are both sweet and comforting.

This pastry is loved for its delicious cinnamon filling and tender, juicy apple, which pairs perfectly together in this beloved treat. While the recipe may seem complicated, it is actually quite simple and can be made with just a few ingredients. So indulge in this timeless dessert that is perfect for any occasion, and savor the blend of flavors that bring a smile to your face every time.

Making apple dumplings with cinnamon syrup is a delicious and classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion. However, making the perfect apple dumplings requires some skill and expertise. In this article, we will provide some valuable tips to help you create the perfect apple dumplings with cinnamon syrup recipe.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Apples

Choosing the right apples is crucial when making apple dumplings. Look for firm and crisp apples that are slightly tart, as these will hold their shape and provide a good balance of sweetness and tartness. Some of the best apple varieties for making dumplings include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn. Avoid using apples that are too soft or too sweet, as they will turn mushy and lack flavor.

Tip 2: Use the Right Pastry

The pastry for apple dumplings should be light and flaky, but also sturdy enough to hold the filling. Use all-purpose flour to make the pastry, and add a pinch of salt for flavor. You can also add a tablespoon of sugar or a teaspoon of cinnamon to the pastry to give it extra flavor. However, be careful not to add too much sugar, as this can make the pastry too sweet and interfere with the flavor of the apples.

Tip 3: Make the Syrup First

Making the cinnamon syrup first allows it to cool down a bit before being poured over the dumplings. This will help to prevent the pastry from getting too soggy and will also ensure that the syrup is evenly distributed. To make the syrup, combine cinnamon, sugar, and water in a medium-sized saucepan and bring to a boil. Allow the mixture to simmer for 5-10 minutes, then remove from heat and let it cool while you prepare the dumplings.

Tip 4: Cut the Apples into Equal Sizes

To ensure that the apples cook evenly, it is essential to cut them into equal sizes. Cut each apple into 8 wedges, and make sure that each wedge is of the same thickness. This will help to ensure that the apples cook at the same rate and do not become too soft or too mushy.

Tip 5: Brush the Pastry with Egg Wash

Brushing the pastry with an egg wash before baking will give it a beautiful golden brown color and a shiny finish. To make the egg wash, whisk together one egg and a tablespoon of milk in a small bowl. Use a pastry brush to brush the egg wash over the top of the pastry, being careful not to let it pool in the corners.

Tip 6: Use a Muffin Tin

Using a muffin tin to bake the apple dumplings will help to keep them upright and prevent them from spreading out too much. Grease the muffin tin with butter or cooking spray, then place the rolled-out pastry in each muffin cup. Add the apple wedges and cinnamon sugar mixture to each cup, then fold the pastry over the apples and pinch the edges to seal.

Tip 7: Bake at the Right Temperature

Baking the apple dumplings at the right temperature is crucial to ensure that they cook evenly and don't become too dry or burnt. Preheat your oven to 375°F and bake the dumplings for 35-40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are soft.

Tip 8: Serve with Vanilla Ice Cream

Serving the apple dumplings with vanilla ice cream is the perfect way to finish off this classic dessert. The cool ice cream pairs perfectly with the warm cinnamon syrup and adds an extra layer of flavor and texture to the dish.
Conclusion
Making apple dumplings with cinnamon syrup is a relatively straightforward process, but it requires some patience and attention to detail to get it perfectly right. By following these valuable tips, you can ensure that your apple dumplings turn out light, flaky, and delicious every time. Whether you are serving them for a family dinner or a special occasion, these apple dumplings are sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
