WHEN Mom made pies to feed the crew during wheat harvest, she always had plenty of dough left over, so she treated us kids to apple dumplings. I've carried on this tradition in my own family. Now my husband and I enjoy this special dessert even when I'm not baking pies.

Choosing Ingredients

Choosing the right ingredients is key to creating the perfect apple dumpling cinnamon rolls. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
Apples:
When making apple dumpling cinnamon rolls, it’s important to choose apples that are not too tart or too sweet. Good options include Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith apples. Make sure to cut them into small, uniform pieces so that they cook evenly.
Cinnamon:
Cinnamon is a key ingredient in apple dumpling cinnamon rolls, and you want to make sure you’re using high-quality cinnamon for the best flavor. Ceylon cinnamon is generally considered to be the best variety, as it has a sweeter, more delicate flavor than other types of cinnamon.
Pastry:
For apple dumpling cinnamon rolls, puff pastry is the best option. You can either make your own puff pastry or buy it from the store. Just make sure to thaw it properly before using it.
Butter:
When making the filling for apple dumpling cinnamon rolls, it’s important to use high-quality butter. Salted or unsalted butter can be used, depending on your preference.

Preparing the Apples

To prepare the apples for your apple dumpling cinnamon rolls, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
Cut them into small, uniform pieces:
As mentioned earlier, cutting the apples into small, uniform pieces is important to ensure that they cook evenly. Aim for pieces that are about 1/4-inch thick.
Add lemon juice:
Adding a bit of lemon juice to the apples will help prevent them from turning brown and also add a bit of tartness to the filling.
Mix with cinnamon, sugar, and butter:
Mixing the apples with cinnamon, sugar, and butter will create a delicious, sweet filling that is perfect for apple dumpling cinnamon rolls. To make the filling, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then add the apples, cinnamon, and sugar.

Rolling the Pastry

To create the perfect apple dumpling cinnamon rolls, you need to know how to roll the pastry properly. Here are a few tips to help you out:
Roll it out thinly:
When rolling out the puff pastry, make sure to roll it out thinly but not so thin that it tears. Aim for a thickness of about 1/8-inch.
Use a pizza cutter:
Using a pizza cutter to cut the pastry into strips makes the process much easier and neater than using a knife.
Wrap the pastry tightly:
When wrapping the pastry around the apple filling, make sure to wrap it tightly to prevent any leaks.

Baking the Apple Dumpling Cinnamon Rolls

To ensure that your apple dumpling cinnamon rolls come out perfectly, here are a few tips to keep in mind when baking:
Bake at the right temperature:
The ideal temperature for baking apple dumpling cinnamon rolls is 375°F. Make sure to preheat your oven before baking.

Brush with egg wash:
Brushing the apple dumpling cinnamon rolls with egg wash before baking will give them a nice golden color and a bit of shine.
Bake until golden brown:
Bake the apple dumpling cinnamon rolls until they are golden brown and the filling is bubbling. This should take about 25-30 minutes.

Serving and Storing

Once your apple dumpling cinnamon rolls are ready, here are a few tips on serving and storing them:
Serve warm:
Apple dumpling cinnamon rolls are best served warm, either on their own or with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
