Apple custard coffee cake is a mouth-watering dessert that is perfect for any occasion. The recipe typically combines the tartness of fresh apples with the sweetness of vanilla custard and the rich goodness of a coffee cake. The result is a cake that is soft, moist, and bursting with flavor.
The Cake Preparation
To create the perfect apple custard coffee cake, start with preparing the cake mix. Combine cake flour, sugar, and baking powder in a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and melted butter until well combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix until everything is well combined.
Next, add vanilla extract and cinnamon to the mixture before stirring in chopped apples. Be sure to choose crisp apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp that will remain firm after baking. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
The Custard Filling
To add a creamy layer of custard to the cake, create the filling while the cake is baking. In a medium saucepan, combine milk, sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Heat the mixture over medium heat, whisking constantly until the custard thickens and coats the back of the spoon. Remove from heat and whisk in butter until it melts and is fully incorporated.
Once the cake is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing it horizontally into two equal layers. Spread the custard filling on the bottom layer, making sure to spread it evenly. Place the top layer back onto the cake and dust it with powdered sugar.
The Final Touches
The final touch to this delectable cake is a decadent drizzle of caramel sauce. To create this, simply heat up caramel sauce in a saucepan over low heat. Once the cake has been drizzled with caramel sauce, it is ready to be served. This cake is perfect for a Sunday brunch or afternoon tea with friends.
