Time 2h25m

Number Of Ingredients 16

1 cup (8 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/4 cup brown sugar packed
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 and 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
8 cups apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 Tablespoons flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 ounces unsalted butter, cut into cubes, at room temperature
1 and 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F). Line a 9x13-inch pan with parchment paper, allowing paper to overhang on two of the ends. Spray with non-stick baking spray and set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or in a large mixing bowl using a handheld electric mixer, beat together the butter and both sugars until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. On low speed, add flour and mix until combined. The dough will be crumbly.
  • Press dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake for 16 minutes. Remove from oven and set on a cooling rack to cool as you prepare the filling. Keep oven temperature at 350.
  • In a large bowl, combine apples and lemon juice and toss to coat. Add in the cinnamon, flour, sugar, and salt. Toss until apples are evenly coated. Arrange apples in an even layer on top of the partially baked crust.
  • Cut the butter into small cubes.
  • In a large bowl, combine the oats, both sugars, cinnamon, and flour. Add in the cubed butter and, using two forks or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until mixture resembles a coarse meal.
  • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
  • Place the pan in the oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
  • Remove from the oven and place the pan on a cooling rack. Cool for at least 1 hour before serving.

Apple crisp mix in the pan bars are a delicious dessert that can be enjoyed all year round. They are easy to make and require only a few ingredients. These bars are perfect for those who love apple crisp but want a more portable version that can be taken on-the-go. In this article, we will discuss valuable tips to consider when making apple crisp mix in the pan bars.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Apples

The type of apples you use can make a significant difference in the taste and texture of your apple crisp mix in the pan bars. It is essential to choose apples that are crisp and firm, with a tart flavor that can stand up to the sweetness of the topping. Good options for baking apples include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, and Rome apples.
Tip 1.1: Peel and Slice the Apples Evenly
When making apple crisp mix in the pan bars, it is crucial to peel and slice the apples evenly. This will ensure that the apples cook evenly and that the bars have a consistent texture throughout. You can use a mandoline or a sharp knife to slice the apples thinly and evenly.

Tip 2: Add Flavor with Spices

Spices are a crucial element in apple crisp mix in the pan bars. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves are classic spices that are often used in apple desserts. They add warmth and depth of flavor to the bars and complement the sweetness of the apples and topping.
Tip 2.1: Mix the Spices with Sugar and Flour
To ensure that the spices are evenly distributed in the topping, it is a good idea to mix them with the sugar and flour before adding the butter. This will help to prevent clumps of spice in the topping and ensure that each bite is evenly flavored.

Tip 3: Use a High-Quality Topping

The topping is an essential component of apple crisp mix in the pan bars. It should be buttery and crisp, with a sweet crunch that complements the soft, juicy apples. Using high-quality ingredients is essential when making the topping. Good options include oats, flour, brown sugar, and butter.
Tip 3.1: Use Old-Fashioned Oats
Old-fashioned oats are rolled oats that have been steamed and flattened. They are an excellent choice for the topping because they add a sweet, nutty flavor and a chewy texture. Avoid using quick oats, as they will make the topping too soft and mushy.

Tip 4: Balance the Sweetness

When making apple crisp mix in the pan bars, it is crucial to balance the sweetness. Apples are naturally sweet, and the topping is also sweetened with sugar. Adding too much sugar to the topping can result in an overly sweet dessert that is cloying and lacks complexity.
Tip 4.1: Adjust the Sugar to Taste
It is essential to taste the topping before baking the bars and adjust the sugar to taste. You can add more or less sugar depending on the sweetness of the apples and your personal preference. Remember to also balance the sweetness with the tartness of the apples, which can be done by adding a squeeze of lemon juice.

Tip 5: Bake at the Right Temperature

Baking apple crisp mix in the pan bars at the right temperature is key to achieving a perfect texture. The bars should be golden brown and crisp on top, with soft, tender apples underneath.
Tip 5.1: Preheat the Oven
Before baking the bars, it is important to preheat the oven to the correct temperature. This will ensure that the bars cook evenly and that the topping is crisp and golden brown.
Tip 5.2: Check the Bars Often
Check the bars often while they are baking to ensure that they do not overcook or burn. You can use a toothpick to check the doneness of the bars, inserting it into the center. If it comes out clean, the bars are done.

Conclusion

Apple crisp mix in the pan bars are a delicious and easy dessert that can be enjoyed anytime. By following these valuable tips and using high-quality ingredients, you can create bars that are crispy, sweet, and bursting with apple flavor. Experiment with different types of apples and spices to find your perfect combination, and enjoy these bars with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top.
