APPLE CREAM CHEESE CIGARS

Apple Cream Cheese Cigars image

Years ago, I was looking for a low fat, yet satisfying dessert for a special dinner and I came across these flavor packed, strudel like, cigars. They are so satisfying, look elegant and disappear quickly. They also pack a wallop for presentation, but are very simplistic to make. They also freeze well if you freeze them before baking.

Time 30m

Yield 24 Cigars, 24 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 cup dried apple, chopped
1/3 cup apple juice concentrate, thawed undiluted
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 dash ground nutmeg
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup low-fat cream cheese (2 ounces neufchatel. This is 1/3 less fat cream cheese)
1 large egg
12 phyllo pastry sheets, thawed
cooking spray
1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs, divided
1/4 cup sugar, divided
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • To prepare the filling, combine the first 4 ingredients in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring the apple mixture to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 5 minutes or until most of the liquid is absorbed. Cool to room temperature. Combine 1/4 cup sugar and cream cheese in a small bowl; beat with a mixer at low speed until blended. Add egg; beat until blended. Fold in apple mixture; cover and set aside.
  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • To prepare the pastry, place 1 phyllo sheet on a large cutting board or work surface (cover remaining dough to keep from drying), and lightly coat with cooking spray. Sprinkle the phyllo with 2 teaspoons graham cracker crumbs and 1 teaspoon sugar. Repeat the layers twice, ending with the crumbs and sugar. Cut phyllo stack lengthwise into 6 (2 3/4-inch-wide) strips using a sharp knife. Spoon 1 rounded teaspoon of apple mixture 1/2 inch from the end of each phyllo strip. Roll up each strip, beginning with apple mixture end; place the strips, seam sides down, on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray, and lightly coat each roll with cooking spray. Repeat the procedure with the remaining phyllo, crumbs, sugar, and apple mixture.
  • To prepare the topping, combine 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon; sprinkle evenly over phyllo rolls. (To Freeze: Here is were I place the cigars on a baking sheet and hard freeze for 1 hour. Remove the cigars and place in freezer proof bags or FoodSaver them on the gentle setting.).
  • Bake at 350° for 10 minutes, and cool on a wire rack.

Apple cream cheese cigars recipes are innovative and delicious dessert recipes that combine the goodness of apples with the creaminess of cheese. These recipes are perfect for those who want to indulge in a sweet treat without feeling too guilty. Apple cream cheese cigars are perfect for any occasion, from dinner parties to simple family desserts.

The Ingredients

The recipe for apple cream cheese cigars typically includes some basic ingredients such as puff pastry sheets, cream cheese, apples, egg white, sugar, and cinnamon. You can also add other ingredients to make the recipe more interesting, like walnuts, raisins, or even chocolate chips. The choice of ingredients will depend on personal preferences and the occasion for which the dessert is being prepared.

The Procedure

The procedure for making apple cream cheese cigars is relatively straightforward. Firstly, the puff pastry sheets should be thawed according to the package instructions. Meanwhile, the cream cheese should be softened at room temperature. The apples should be peeled, cored, and finely chopped. The cinnamon and sugar should be mixed in a separate bowl.
Step 1: Preparing the Filling
To make the filling, the softened cream cheese should be mixed with the finely chopped apples. You can also add some cinnamon or sugar to the mixture to make it more flavorful. Other flavorings like vanilla extract or lemon juice can also be added at this stage.
Step 2: Assembling the Dessert
Next, the thawed puff pastry sheets should be laid out on a flat surface. The cream cheese and apple mixture should then be spread on top of the sheets. The mixture should be spread evenly, leaving about an inch of space around the edges.
Step 3: Rolling the Cigars
Once the mixture has been spread, the pastry sheets should be rolled up tightly to form the cigars. The edges should be sealed using some egg white wash, which will help to hold them together. After the cigars have been rolled up, they should be cut into small pieces using a sharp knife.
Step 4: Baking the Cigars
The cigars should then be placed on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. They should be brushed with some egg white wash and sprinkled with some cinnamon and sugar mixture. The cigars should then be baked in a preheated oven for about 15 minutes or until they turn golden brown.
Step 5: Serving the Dessert
The apple cream cheese cigars should be served warm or at room temperature. They can be served as they are or with some additional toppings like whipped cream or ice cream. You can also dust some powdered sugar on top to make it look more appealing.

Variations of the Recipe

There are many different variations of the apple cream cheese cigars recipe. Instead of using puff pastry sheets, you can use filo pastry or phyllo dough. You can also add some chopped nuts, like walnuts or pecans, to the filling for some added crunch.
1. Apple Cream Cheese Strudels
Instead of rolling the cigars, the pastry sheets can be folded over the apple cream cheese filling to make a strudel. This version of the recipe is perfect for those who prefer a larger serving size.
2. Apple Cream Cheese Turnovers
For a more portable dessert option, you can make apple cream cheese turnovers. The filling is sandwiched between two pieces of pastry and sealed together at the edges. These turnovers are perfect for a quick snack on the go.
3. Mini Apple Cream Cheese Pies
To make mini apple cream cheese pies, you can use muffin tins instead of a baking sheet. The puff pastry sheets can be cut into small circles and pressed into the muffin tins. The cream cheese and apple filling can be added on top of the pastry sheets, and the pies can be baked until golden.

Conclusion

Apple cream cheese cigars are a delicious and simple dessert recipe that combines the goodness of apples with the creaminess of cheese. The recipe is easy to make, and the ingredients are readily available. The cigars can be served warm or at room temperature, and they are perfect for any occasion. With some simple variations, you can create a number of different desserts that are sure to please everyone.
Apple cream cheese cigars are a great dessert for any occasion, whether it be a birthday party or a dinner with friends. The combination of the tartness of the apple and the sweetness of the cream cheese is a match made in heaven. In this article, we will be discussing some valuable tips that you can use when making apple cream cheese cigars.

Tips When Choosing Apples

When making apple cream cheese cigars, it is important to choose the right apples. Not all apples are created equal, and some are better suited for this dessert than others. Here are some tips on how to choose the right apples for your apple cream cheese cigars:
Choose Firm Apples
When choosing apples for apple cream cheese cigars, it is essential to select apples that are firm. Apples that are too soft or mealy will not hold up well when they are cooked, and they will not provide the desired texture in the dessert. Firm apples such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady work best.
Choose Tart Apples
Tart apples are the best apples to use when making apple cream cheese cigars. The tartness of the apples pairs well with the sweetness of the cream cheese, providing a balanced flavor. Some great tart apple options include Granny Smith or Honeycrisp.
Avoid Waxy Apples
Waxy apples such as Red Delicious or Gala apples are not ideal for making apple cream cheese cigars. These apples tend to be sweeter and have a softer texture, which makes them prone to falling apart when they are cooked.

Tips on Rolling the Dough

The dough is an essential part of apple cream cheese cigars. Here are some tips on how to get the perfect dough:
Use Puff Pastry Dough
Puff pastry dough is the ideal dough to use when making apple cream cheese cigars. The light, flaky dough provides the perfect crunch to complement the creamy filling. You can use store-bought puff pastry dough or make your own if you have the time.
Roll Out the Dough Evenly
When rolling out the dough, it is important to do so evenly. Unevenly rolled dough will lead to uneven cooking, which will affect the overall consistency of the dessert. Use a rolling pin to ensure that the dough is rolled out smoothly and evenly.
Keep the Dough Cold
It is essential to keep the dough cold while you are working with it. Warm dough is difficult to manage and will not hold its shape when it is cooked. Work with the dough in small batches, keeping the rest of the dough chilled until you are ready to roll it out.

Tips on Preparing the Filling

The filling is what gives apple cream cheese cigars their unique flavor. Here are some tips to help you prepare the filling:
Use Room Temperature Cream Cheese
When making the filling for apple cream cheese cigars, it is important to use room temperature cream cheese. This will make it easier to mix the cream cheese with the other ingredients, creating a smooth and creamy filling.
Add Lemon Juice to Prevent Browning
Apples tend to brown quickly once they are cut. Adding lemon juice to the apple filling can help prevent browning, keeping the filling looking fresh and vibrant. Additionally, the lemon juice adds a tangy flavor to complement the sweetness of the cream cheese.
Add Spices to the Filling
Adding spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice to the filling can enhance the flavor of apple cream cheese cigars. These spices complement the sweetness of the dessert while providing depth and complexity.

Tips on Assembling the Dessert

The assembly of apple cream cheese cigars is the final step in creating this delicious dessert. Here are some tips to ensure that assembly goes smoothly:
Measure the Filling Carefully
When assembling apple cream cheese cigars, it is important to measure the filling carefully. Adding too much filling can make it difficult to roll the dough, while too little filling can result in a bland dessert. Measure the filling out before you begin assembly, ensuring that you have the correct amount for each cigar.
Work Quickly and Efficiently
Working quickly and efficiently is crucial when assembling apple cream cheese cigars. The puff pastry dough can quickly become warm, making it difficult to work with. Assemble the cigars as quickly as possible, keeping the dough as chilled as possible.
Brush with Egg Wash
Brushing the top of the apple cream cheese cigars with egg wash will give them a beautiful, golden-brown finish. Use an egg wash made from beaten eggs and a little bit of water. Apply the egg wash with a pastry brush, ensuring that the entire surface of the dough is covered evenly.

Conclusion

Apple cream cheese cigars are a delightful and versatile dessert that can be enjoyed any time of the year. By following the tips outlined in this article, you can ensure that you create a delicious, flaky dessert that is sure to impress. Remember to choose the right apples, roll out the dough evenly, prepare the filling properly, and assemble the dessert with care. With these tips, you can make the perfect apple cream cheese cigars every time.
