APPLE CRANBERRY CRUMB PIE

Apple Cranberry Crumb Pie image

I've been making this pie for over 10 years! It's like no other recipe I've found. The secret ingredient is the crushed fruit sauce, which by the way can be found near the poultry. This recipe was printed in our local newspaper which had a beautiful picture. I had to try it! Now it's become a must have at Thanksgiving. The only pie that has even come close is a Marie Calendar Pie. I thought I'd lost this recipe, but recently found it, so I wanted to get in on Zaar before I lost it again! It's one of those you go crazy trying to find. Enjoy --V

The Preparation

Making apple cranberry crumb pie is quite easy and can be done in a few simple steps. Here is a step-by-step guide to making this delicious dessert.
Step 1: Preparing the crust
In a food processor, mix the flour, salt, and sugar until combined. Add the diced butter and pulse until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Gradually add the ice water and continue pulsing until the dough comes together in a ball. Flatten the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Step 2: Preparing the filling
In a large bowl, mix the diced apples, cranberries, sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Stir until the mixture is evenly coated.
Step 3: Preparing the crumble topping
In a medium bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add the diced butter and use your fingers to combine the mixture until it forms coarse crumbs.
Step 4: Assembling the pie
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Take the dough out of the fridge and roll it out into a 12 inch (30cm) circle. Place the dough into a 9-inch (22cm) pie dish, pressing it firmly against the sides and bottom of the dish. Trim the excess dough to create a neat edge. Pour the apple-cranberry filling into the pie crust, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the filling, covering it completely.

Bake the pie for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Apple cranberry crumb pie is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that combines the sweetness of apples with the tartness of cranberries to create a perfect balance of flavors. The crunchy crumb topping adds texture and makes this pie even more irresistible. But, baking a perfect pie is an art that requires attention to detail and a few useful tips. Here are some valuable tips that you should keep in mind while making apple cranberry crumb pie recipes.

Choose the Right Apples

Apples are the star ingredient in this recipe, and choosing the right type of apple is critical to the success of your pie. Tart apples are the best for pies as they can hold their shape during baking and won’t turn into mush. Some of the best varieties of apples that you can use in your pie are Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Jonagold. Combine two or more varieties of apples to get a more complex flavor.

Prepare the Cranberries Right

Cranberries are added to this recipe to add a tart flavor that complements the sweetness of the apples. However, cranberries are extremely tart on their own, so it’s essential to prepare them right before baking your pie. Boil the cranberries in a little bit of water and sugar before adding them to the pie to reduce their tartness. You can also add some orange zest or cinnamon to the boiling mix to add more flavor.

Add Flavor Enhancers

Apart from apples and cranberries, there are many ingredients that you can add to your pie to enhance the flavor. Adding spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, or allspice can add a depth of flavor to your pie. You can also add some lemon juice or zest to add a pop of freshness to the pie. Some recipes also call for adding a splash of brandy or whiskey to the filling to add a boozy flavor.

Make the Crumb Topping Right

The crumb topping is the signature element of this recipe that gives the pie its crunchy texture. Use cold butter to make the crumb topping to ensure that it holds its shape during baking. Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to blend the butter with the flour, sugar, and cinnamon until the mixture looks like coarse sand. Don’t overwork the mixture, or the butter will melt, and you will end up with a greasy topping.

Bake the Pie at the Right Temperature

Baking this pie at the right temperature is crucial to ensure that it cooks evenly and doesn’t burn. A temperature of 375°F is ideal for baking this pie. If the oven is too hot, the crust will bake too quickly, and the filling will be underdone. If the oven’s temperature is too low, the pie’s crust will be soggy, and the filling will be mushy.

Don’t Overfill the Pie

Overfilling the pie with the fruit mixture is a common mistake that many people make while making this recipe. Over-filling the pie can cause it to overflow, resulting in a messy oven and an unevenly cooked pie. Only fill the pie crust with the fruit mixture until it reaches the rims of the crust. Use a pie bird or pie weights to prevent the crust from shrinking during baking.

Cool the Pie Completely Before Serving

Once the pie is cooked, it’s essential to let it cool down before cutting it. Cutting the pie while it’s still hot can cause the filling to spill out, making it difficult to serve. Let the pie cool on a wire rack for a few hours before serving. You can also refrigerate the pie overnight and reheat it in the oven before serving.

Conclusion

Apple cranberry crumb pie is a classic dessert that people of all ages love. It’s easy to make and requires a few simple ingredients. While making this recipe, keeping these valuable tips in mind will ensure that your pie turns out perfect every time. Choose the right apples, prepare the cranberries right, add flavor enhancers, make the crumb topping right, bake the pie at the right temperature, don’t overfill the pie, and cool the pie completely before serving. These tips will help you make a drool-worthy pie that will leave your guests asking for more.
