CRANBERRY-APPLE BUTTER BARS

Cranberry-Apple Butter Bars image

I found this recipe in the Pillsbury Fall Baking Booklet that I found in the checkout aisle of the grocery store. The pictures in this booklet are absolutely amazing! One medium orange will provide enough grated pell and the 1/4 cup of juice called for in this recipe. Homemade or purchased apple butter will work in this recipe.

Apple cranberry bars are the perfect snack for those who love to indulge their sweet tooth while still staying healthy. With a combination of apple and cranberry, you get the perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors that will have your taste buds dancing with joy. However, making apple cranberry bars can be quite tricky, especially for those who are new to baking. In this article, we will be discussing some valuable tips on how to make the perfect apple cranberry bars recipe.

Tip 1: Choose the right type of apples

When making apple cranberry bars, it is important to choose the right type of apples. For this recipe, it is best to use apples that are firm and not too sweet. Granny Smith apples are an excellent choice as they are tart and firm, making them perfect for baking. Other good choices include Braeburn or Honeycrisp apples.

Tip 2: Use fresh or frozen cranberries

The best type of cranberries to use for this recipe are fresh or frozen cranberries. Dried cranberries can also be used, but they tend to be overly sweet and lack the tangy flavor that fresh or frozen cranberries offer. If using fresh cranberries, make sure to clean them thoroughly before adding them to the mixture.

Tip 3: Make the crust from scratch

Although pre-made crusts are readily available at the grocery store, making the crust from scratch will give your apple cranberry bars a superior taste and texture. The homemade crust is surprisingly easy to make, and it takes only a few minutes to prepare. Use a food processor or a pastry cutter to mix the ingredients, then press the mixture firmly into the bottom of the pan.

Tip 4: Use a parchment paper

To ensure that your apple cranberry bars do not stick to the pan, it is a good idea to use parchment paper. Line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper, then grease the paper and the sides of the pan with butter. This will make it easier to remove the bars from the pan once they are done.

Tip 5: Add a touch of cinnamon

Cinnamon is a spice that complements the flavors of apple and cranberry perfectly. Add just a touch of cinnamon to the mixture to enhance the flavor of the bars. Too much cinnamon can overpower the other flavors, so use it sparingly.

Tip 6: Use a food processor for even distribution

When mixing the ingredients for the filling, it is important to ensure that everything is evenly distributed. Using a food processor is an easy way to achieve this. Pulse the apples, cranberries, sugar, cinnamon, and cornstarch in the food processor until everything is mixed well. This will ensure that each bite of the bars has the perfect balance of flavors.

Tip 7: Don't overbake the bars

Overbaking the bars can result in a dry and crumbly texture. It is important to keep a close eye on the bars while they are in the oven and remove them as soon as the edges start to turn golden brown. The bars will continue to cook even after they are removed from the oven, so it is best to err on the side of caution and take them out a little early.

Tip 8: Allow the bars to cool before cutting

It is important to allow the apple cranberry bars to cool completely before cutting them. This will ensure that the bars hold their shape and do not crumble. Once they have cooled, use a sharp knife to cut them into desired portions.

Conclusion

Making apple cranberry bars is a fun and easy way to enjoy the flavors of fall. With the right ingredients and some simple tips, you can create the perfect batch of bars that will impress your family and friends. Choose the right type of apples, use fresh or frozen cranberries, make the crust from scratch, use parchment paper, add a touch of cinnamon, use a food processor, don't overbake the bars, and allow them to cool before cutting. Follow these tips, and you will be on your way to creating the best apple cranberry bars recipe!
