Time 1h5m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1/4 cup dark-brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
1 tablespoon unfiltered apple-cider vinegar
4 to 5 firm red baking apples, such as Empire or Honeycrisp (2 pounds total)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger (from a peeled 1-inch piece)
Pinch of kosher salt
1 tablespoon heavy cream
Vanilla ice cream and crushed amaretto cookies, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Stir together both sugars, butter, and vinegar until well combined. Spread mixture evenly in the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
  • Peel and core apples, then slice into 3/4-inch-thick rounds. Toss with cinnamon, ginger, and salt in a bowl. Place on top of sugar mixture in a single layer, overlapping slightly if needed. Cover with parchment-lined foil and bake until just beginning to soften and bubble, 20 to 25 minutes. Spoon sauce over apples, and increase heat to 450 degrees. Continue to bake, uncovered, until sauce thickens and apples are soft and brown, about 15 minutes more.

The History of Apple Cider Sundaes

The origin of apple cider sundaes is somewhat murky, but it's likely that they evolved from traditional apple cider floats. Floats, which are made by combining carbonated water or soda with ice cream, have been around since the late 19th century. It's possible that someone decided to swap out the carbonated liquid for fresh apple cider, and thus the apple cider sundae was born. Over time, the recipe has evolved to include a variety of toppings, from whipped cream and caramel sauce to chopped nuts and dried fruit.

What Are the Key Ingredients in Apple Cider Sundaes?

The key ingredients in apple cider sundaes are, of course, fresh apple cider and ice cream. The quality of these two ingredients is crucial to the overall success of the dish. For the cider, look for fresh-pressed or unpasteurized varieties if possible, as they will have a more complex flavor profile. As for the ice cream, vanilla is the traditional choice, but you can certainly experiment with other flavors depending on your preferences. In addition to these two main ingredients, you can also add a range of spices and other flavorings to your apple cider sundae recipes. Some popular options include cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, and ginger. You can also add a bit of brown sugar or maple syrup for added sweetness.

How Are Apple Cider Sundaes Made?

The process for making apple cider sundaes is fairly simple, but there are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind for the best results. Here's a basic overview of how to make apple cider sundaes: 1. Begin by simmering apple cider and spices in a saucepan until the flavors have melded together. Allow the mixture to cool slightly. 2. In bowls or glasses, place a scoop of vanilla ice cream. 3. Pour the cooled cider mixture over the ice cream. 4. Top with any desired toppings, such as whipped cream, caramel sauce, or chopped nuts.

Apple cider sundaes are also a great way to incorporate more fall flavors into your dessert repertoire. There's something about the combination of warm apple cider and cool ice cream that's both comforting and refreshing at the same time. Tips for Making Apple Cider Syrup

The apple cider syrup is the most crucial component of an apple cider sundae. The following are some tips to make the perfect apple cider syrup:
1. Use fresh apple cider
Using fresh and high-quality apple cider is essential for making a flavorful apple cider syrup. You can buy fresh apple cider from a local farmer's market or a grocery store.
2. Choose the right spices
Experiment with different spices to create a unique flavor. Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and cloves work well with apple cider. You can add these spices by simmering them with the apple cider.
3. Reduce the syrup
Reducing the apple cider syrup by simmering it on low heat will make it thicker and sweeter. It will also intensify the apple flavor.
4. Add sugar to taste
Depending on how sweet you like the syrup, you can add some sugar. Start with a small amount and keep adding until you achieve the desired sweetness.

Choosing the Right Ice Cream

The ice cream is another essential component of an apple cider sundae. Here are some tips on picking the right ice cream:
1. Choose a neutral flavor
Choosing a neutral flavor like vanilla, caramel, or honey will allow you to focus on the apple cider syrup's flavor without any interruption.
2. Consider using a custard-style ice cream
Custard-style ice cream has egg yolks, which give it a creamier texture and a richer flavor. This type of ice cream complements the sweetness of the apple cider syrup.
3. Get creative with ice cream flavors
If you want to try something new, you can experiment with different ice cream flavors. For instance, a scoop of cinnamon ice cream will go well with apple cider syrup.

Tasty Toppings

Adding toppings to your apple cider sundae is a fun way to make it more interesting. The following are some topping ideas:
1. Whipped cream
Adding whipped cream to your apple cider sundae will give it some extra sweetness and will complement the flavors of the apple cider syrup.
2. Caramel sauce
Drizzle some caramel sauce on top of your sundae to add some richness and a tasty contrast to the apple cider syrup.
3. Toasted pecans
Toasted pecans will give your sundae a nutty crunch and a pleasant texture.
4. Vanilla wafer cookies
Adding some crushed vanilla wafer cookies on top of your sundae will add some crispy texture and sweet flavor.

Serving the Sundae

Now that you have made the perfect apple cider sundae, it's time to serve it. Here are some ideas on how to serve your sundae:
1. In a mason jar
Serving your sundae in a mason jar will give a rustic and charming look to your dessert. You can also screw on the lid and take it with you on the go.
2. In a glass bowl
Serving your sundae in a glass bowl will showcase the different layers of the sundae and allow you to appreciate the dessert's beauty.
3. In an ice cream cone
Serving your sundae in an ice cream cone will make it easy to enjoy on the go. You can also add a cone to the bottom of the mason jar for a fun twist.

Conclusion

Apple cider sundaes are a delicious way to enjoy the flavors of apple cider while incorporating ice cream and creative toppings. Making the perfect apple cider syrup, choosing the right ice cream, and adding tasty toppings will elevate your sundae game.
