TEDDIE'S APPLE CAKE

Teddie's Apple Cake image

In a modern world of Cinnamon Hot Pockets and Pecan Pie Pringles, apple-picking is one of the few agricultural rituals we can all still get our hands into. This cake - a classic from 1973 - is a godsend to anyone who has overloaded at the pick-your-own orchard or overbought at the farmers' market. Like many simple cakes, this one uses neutral oil that lets the fruit flavor come through, rather than show-offy butter.

Aunt Becky's apple cake that is flipped over is a classic dessert that is both easy to make and incredibly delicious. Perfect for those who want to impress their guests, this dessert is sure to be a crowd-favorite. But making this cake requires some specialized techniques, which are often overlooked. Therefore, in this article, we will discuss some valuable tips that you should keep in mind when making Aunt Becky's apple cake to flip over.

Tip #1: Choose the Right Apples

One of the most critical aspects of making an apple cake that will flip over correctly is choosing the right apples. You need to select apples that will not only taste delicious but will also hold up well during cooking. Apples that are too soft or mealy will not work as they will disintegrate during baking. Granny Smith apples are one of the best options as they have a firm texture and a tart flavor that will complement the sweetness of the cake perfectly.

Tip #2: Prepare Your Cake Pan

The next step to ensure that your apple cake will flip over perfectly is to prepare your cake pan correctly. You will need a large cake pan that is at least 10 inches in diameter. Make sure to grease the bottom and sides of the pan thoroughly with butter or non-stick spray to ensure that the cake will release smoothly. You can also line the bottom of the cake pan with parchment paper to make it easier to remove the cake from the pan later.

Tip #3: Slice Your Apples Thinly and Evenly

When it comes to making an apple cake that will flip over, the size and consistency of the apple slices are crucial. You need to slice your apples thinly and evenly so that they will cook evenly and create a beautiful pattern when the cake is flipped over. Make sure to remove the apple cores and slice them into thin, even slices that are approximately 1/8 inch thick. If your apple slices are too thick, they will not cook evenly, and your cake may fall apart when you flip it over.

Tip #4: Arrange Your Apple Slices Carefully

The way you arrange your apple slices in the cake pan is also essential. Make sure to place the apple slices in a single layer on the bottom of the pan, starting from the center and working your way out. The apples should be placed tightly together, without any gaps, to create a beautiful pattern. You can also sprinkle some cinnamon and sugar on top of the apples to add some extra flavor.

Tip #5: Make a Thick Cake Batter

The batter for an apple cake that will flip over should be thick and sturdy. You want a batter that will hold up well during baking and will support the weight of the apples. When making your batter, make sure to add enough flour to create a thick, cake-like consistency. You can also add some sour cream or yogurt to the batter to make it even more delicious.

Tip #6: Layer Your Batter on Top of the Apples

Once you have arranged your apple slices in the cake pan, you need to layer your batter on top carefully. Spoon the batter slowly over the apples, making sure to spread it evenly and cover all the apples completely. You can use a spatula or the back of a spoon to level the batter and smooth it out. Make sure that the batter is distributed evenly, or your cake may not cook evenly.

Tip #7: Bake Your Cake Slowly and Gently

Baking an apple cake that will flip over correctly requires some patience and care. You need to bake your cake slowly and gently to ensure that it cooks evenly and that the apples do not fall apart. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake your cake for approximately 45-50 minutes. Check your cake regularly to ensure that it is not browning too quickly. You may need to cover the cake with aluminum foil halfway through baking to prevent it from getting too brown.

Tip #8: Let Your Cake Cool Completely

Once your cake is done baking, you need to let it cool completely before attempting to flip it over. This is critical as the cake needs to set and firm up before you turn it out. Place the cake on a wire rack and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before attempting to remove it from the pan.

Tip #9: Flip Your Cake Over Quickly and Carefully

The moment of truth has arrived, and it's time to flip your cake over. Make sure to hold the cake pan firmly and quickly flip it over onto a large plate or serving platter. If you prepared your pan correctly, the cake should slide out smoothly, revealing a beautiful layer of caramelized apples on top. If the cake does not come out quickly, you can gently tap the pan or use a spatula to loosen the cake from the sides of the pan.

Tip #10: Serve Your Cake Warm with a Scoop of Ice Cream

The final step is to serve your apple cake that is flipped over warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The contrast between the warm caramelized apples and cold ice cream is heavenly and will have your guests asking for seconds. Enjoy your delicious dessert and savor the compliments as you bask in the glow of a job well done.

Conclusion

Making Aunt Becky's apple cake that will flip over requires some expertise, but it's not as difficult as it might seem. Follow these valuable tips, and you will be sure to create a beautiful and delicious dessert that will impress your guests. Remember to choose the right apples, prepare your cake pan carefully, slice your apples thinly and evenly, layer your batter on top of the apples, bake your cake slowly, let your cake cool completely, flip your cake over quickly and carefully, and serve your cake warm with a scoop of ice cream.
