Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 cup stone-ground mustard
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
8 slices raisin walnut bread
4 tablespoons salted butter, at room temperature
8 slices sharp Cheddar
12 very thin slices Granny Smith apple

Provided by Giada De Laurentiis

Categories     main-dish

Time 50m

Yield 4 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/4 cup olive oil
2 shallots, chopped
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
2 large Pink Lady apples, diced small
1 teaspoon lemon zest (from 1 lemon) plus 1 tablespoon lemon juice (from 1/2 lemon)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil
4 ciabatta rolls, sliced in half horizontally
1 pound Brie, sliced into 1/4-inch slices

Steps:

  • Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil to the pan along with the shallots and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring often, until soft and fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add the apples and stir to coat in the oil. Add the lemon zest, juice and remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Stir well to coat the apples in all the flavors. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples begin to brown and are cooked through, about 8 minutes. Stir in the basil and set aside to cool slightly.
  • Meanwhile, lay the ciabatta halves out so they are open-faced. Scoop out some of the inside of the bread and discard. Divide the Brie evenly among the halves, about 3 slices per half, tearing them as needed to cover the bread. Divide the apple mixture on the bottom halves of each sandwich (approximately 1/4 cup per sandwich). Place the tops on the sandwiches and press slightly to close.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to the skillet along with 2 sandwiches. Place a lid smaller than the skillet on top of the sandwiches and press down gently. Cook until golden brown on the first side, about 3 minutes. Flip the sandwiches and repeat on the second side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. Repeat with the remaining oil and sandwiches. (Alternatively, you can use a panini press.) Serve warm.

The delicious taste and texture of this grilled cheese sandwich can be attributed to the ingredients used and the grilling technique applied. In this article, we will discuss some valuable tips that will help you make the best apple brie arugula grilled cheese, and enjoy every bite of this delectable sandwich.

Tip 1: Choosing the Right Bread

One of the most important factors that can make or break your grilled cheese sandwich is the bread. The type of bread you use will significantly affect the texture, flavor, and overall experience of the sandwich. For the apple brie arugula grilled cheese sandwich, it is recommended to use a crusty artisanal bread, such as sourdough, ciabatta, or French bread. These bread types add a great crunch to the sandwich and can hold up well against the creamy brie filling.
Tip 1.1: Slicing the Bread
Another crucial aspect of choosing the right bread is how you slice it. The key to making a perfect grilled cheese sandwich is to ensure that the bread slices are evenly cut and are of the right thickness. The ideal thickness for the bread slices is between 1/2 to 3/4 inches. This thickness is adequate to hold the filling without overpowering it, and also ensures that the sandwich gets cooked evenly.

Tip 2: Picking the Right Cheese

The filling of any grilled cheese sandwich is undoubtedly the star of the show, and the same holds for the apple brie arugula grilled cheese sandwich. When it comes to choosing the cheese for this recipe, brie is the perfect choice. Brie has a soft, creamy texture and a rich, buttery flavor that complements the sweetness of the apples and the bitterness of the arugula. Moreover, brie melts beautifully when grilled, making it an ideal choice for a grilled cheese sandwich.
Tip 2.1: Adding Flavor with Cheese Variations
If you want to add an extra kick to your grilled cheese sandwich, you can experiment with different cheese variations. For instance, you can substitute brie with camembert, blue cheese, or goat cheese, depending on your preference. Each of these cheese types has a distinct flavor profile and can bring a unique taste to the sandwich.

Tip 3: Preparing the Apples and Arugula

The ingredients used in the apple brie arugula grilled cheese sandwich play an essential role in balancing the flavors and textures of the sandwich. Therefore, it is crucial to prepare the apples and arugula correctly.
Tip 3.1: Choosing the Right Apples
When selecting apples for the grilled cheese sandwich, choose the ones that have a nice balance of sweetness and tartness. Granny Smith apples are an excellent choice because they have a tart flavor and a firm texture that holds up well when grilled. However, if you prefer sweeter apples, you can go for Honeycrisp or Gala apples.
Tip 3.2: Cleaning and Chopping the Arugula
Arugula is a delicate, leafy green that has a slightly bitter and peppery taste, which makes it a natural accompaniment to cheese. Before using the arugula, make sure to rinse it thoroughly and dry it well. Once the arugula is clean, chop it into small pieces to make it easier to eat and prevent it from falling out of the sandwich while grilling.

Tip 4: Proper Grilling Techniques

Grilling a perfect grilled cheese sandwich requires some skill and patience, but the result is worth it. Below are some valuable grilling techniques to elevate the apple brie arugula grilled cheese sandwich.
Tip 4.1: Buttering the Bread
Buttering the bread slices before grilling is essential because it not only adds flavor but also helps the bread to cook evenly. Make sure to use unsalted butter at room temperature to prevent the bread from burning. Apply the butter to one side of the bread slices, and place the buttered side down on the grill pan.
Tip 4.2: Assembling the Sandwich
Once the bread slices are lightly grilled, it's time to assemble the sandwich. Start by adding a generous layer of brie cheese to one side of the bread. Next, add the sliced apples and chopped arugula on top of the cheese. Finally, add another layer of brie cheese on top of the apples and arugula. Close the sandwich by placing the other slice of grilled bread on top.
Tip 4.3: Grilling the Sandwich
To grill the apple brie arugula grilled cheese sandwich, place it on the grill pan and cook it on medium heat until the cheese starts to melt and the bread turns golden brown. Flip the sandwich and cook it on the other side until the bread is crispy and has grill marks. Make sure to press down on the sandwich gently while cooking to allow the cheese to melt and the ingredients to blend together.

Conclusion

The apple brie arugula grilled cheese sandwich is a delicious and easy-to-make recipe that can be enjoyed as a quick snack or a gourmet meal. The key to making a perfect grilled cheese sandwich lies in choosing the right bread, cheese, and ingredients, as well as mastering the grilling techniques.
