APPLE BRAID RECIPE - (4.4/5)

APPLE BRAID Recipe - (4.4/5) image

Provided by smclane

Number Of Ingredients 17

For the Bread:
3 medium-size Granny Smith apples
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons lemon juice
2 1/2 cups bread flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon instant yeast (I prefer SAF Instant Yeast)
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup warm water
2 1/4 teaspoons vegetable oil
For the Glaze:
1/3 cup confectioner's sugar, sifted
5 teaspoons whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of kosher salt
Pinch of nutmeg

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Make the Apple Filling: Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin slices, then cut the slices in half. Toss the apple pieces with the sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Bake the apple filling in an 8-inch square baking pan (or 9-inch pie tin) for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside. (Note: Do not turn the oven off at this point. You will be using it to bake the finished braid.) Make the Bread: While the apple filling is baking, begin preparing the bread dough. Mix the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Add the water and oil and mix the dough for 6 minutes using an electric mixer on medium-high speed. Spray a smooth clean surface with cooking spray and turn the dough out onto the surface. Knead the dough briefly to give it a smooth surface (this will only take several turns of the dough to accomplish). Spray a rolling pin with cooking spray and roll the dough out into a large rectangle, about 12-inches by 16-inches in size. Lift onto a greased baking sheet. Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut each side into strips about 1-inch wide down each side, leaving the center third of the dough uncut. Spread the apple filling down the middle third of the dough. Fold strips of dough into the center, crisscrossing the filling by alternating strips from each side. Lightly press ends to seal, and straighten out the braid with your hands, if necessary, to straighten. Bake the braid in the oven for 25 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let the braid cool for several minutes. Make the Glaze: Whisk together the glaze ingredients in a small bowl until blended and smooth. Brush the glaze in a thick coat over the entire surface of the apple braid while it is still cooling. Carefully transfer the braid to a cooling rack set on a baking sheet (to catch drips) to finish cooling and prevent the bottom of the braid from becoming soggy from sitting in any pooling glaze. Slice and serve.

APPLE DANISH BRAID

Easy enough, with the use of crescent roll dough. There is also a product called recipe creations, which doesn't have the scoring in the crescent rolls; that would make this even simpler. Taken from razzledazzlerecipes.com and posted for ZWT.

APPLE CHICKEN SAUSAGE BRUNCH BRAID

Apple Chicken Sausage Brunch Braid image

A delicious, savory brunch braid made with chicken sausage, veggies, and blue cheese!

Provided by ezmars

Categories     Breakfast and Brunch     Eggs     Breakfast Burrito Recipes

Time 1h15m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 14

olive oil
4 links apple-chicken sausage, diced
2 cups diced sweet potatoes
2 stalks celery, diced
½ cup diced red onion
½ cup diced red bell pepper
2 cloves garlic, chopped
salt and ground black pepper to taste
1 cup seedless green grapes, halved
1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
½ cup crumbled blue cheese, or more to taste
1 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 tablespoon sliced almonds, or as needed

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Heat olive oil in a skillet and cook and stir apple-chicken sausage, sweet potatoes, celery, red onion, red bell pepper, and garlic in the hot oil until vegetables are cooked through but not soft, about 15 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl and season with salt and black pepper. Stir grape halves into sausage mixture.
  • Mix cream cheese, blue cheese, and rosemary in a bowl.
  • Place sheets of puff pastry onto a large baking sheet. Use a rolling pin to flatten the puff pastry sheets and join them along a long edge into one large sheet. Starting with a long edge, use a sharp knife to cut strips into pastry about 1 1/2 inches apart and 3 inches deep. Repeat cutting strips into the opposite long edge, leaving a fringe of cut pastry strips on each opposite edge and an uncut wide strip of pastry in the middle.
  • Spread filling evenly down the uncut center of the pastry sheet; drop spoonfuls of blue cheese mixture over the filling.
  • Braid the pastry by lifting a left and right pastry strip, crossing the two strips over the filling, and twisting one time to join. Repeat braiding the pastry all down the roll, crossing opposite pairs of strips over the filling and twisting one time. Sprinkle the pastry with sliced almonds.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the filling is hot and the pastry is golden brown, about 30 minutes.

Apple braids are a delicious and irresistible pastry that can be made using apples, cinnamon and puff pastry. These delicate pockets of flaky pastry are stuffed with a sweet apple cinnamon filling, making them perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet snack. Apple braid recipes come in many different varieties, but all share the common feature of being delicious and easy to make.

History of Apple Braids:

The history of apple braids is not well documented, but the recipe is thought to have originated in Europe, specifically in Denmark or Sweden. These countries are famous for their flaky and delicate pastries, and apple braids are just one example of their mastery of pastry-making. In the United States, apple braids have become a popular breakfast pastry, served in coffee shops and bakeries across the country.

Ingredients:

The ingredients for apple braids vary depending on the recipe, but most will require the following:
  • Puff pastry dough
  • Apples
  • Cinnamon
  • Sugar
  • Milk or egg wash for brushing

Preparation:

To prepare the apple filling for the braid, peel and dice apples, sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar, and cook them in a pan until they are soft and caramelized. Next, roll out the puff pastry dough and cut it into four equal rectangles. Layer the apple mixture in the center of each rectangle and then cut diagonal strips on each side of the rectangle. Weave the strips over the apple mixture and then brush the top of the pastry with a milk or egg wash. Place the pastries in the oven and bake until golden brown and flaky.

Variations:

There are many variations of the apple braid recipe that can be adjusted to taste or dietary needs:
  • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free puff pastry dough.
  • Vegan: Use a vegan puff pastry dough, and substitute coconut oil or vegan margarine instead of butter. The filling can also be made with maple syrup instead of sugar.
  • Apple-Cranberry Braid: Add cranberries to the apple filling mixture for an extra burst of flavor.
  • Apple-Pear Braid: Substitute some of the apples for pears and mix with caramelized onions for a savory twist on the classic recipe.
  • Apple-Cheese Braid: Add grated cheese to the apple filling for a savory and sweet combination.

Serving Suggestions:

Apple braids are best served warm and fresh out of the oven. They can be eaten as a breakfast pastry, mid-day snack or dessert. A drizzle of frosting or glaze can be added to enhance the sweetness of the pastry. Alternatively, apple braids can be served with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent treat.

Conclusion:

When it comes to baked goods, few things can compare to the comforting taste of an apple braid. Whether you want a quick and easy breakfast or a delicious snack to enjoy with your coffee, apple braids are sure to satisfy your cravings. But as easy as they may seem, perfecting the art of making an apple braid can be tricky. That's why we have compiled a list of valuable tips to help you make the best apple braid recipes possible.

1. Choose the right apples

When making apple braids, the type of apple you choose can make a huge difference in the overall taste and texture of your recipe. Some types of apples are better suited for baking than others, and choosing the right one can make all the difference. You want to choose apples that are firm and tart, as they will hold their shape better when baked. Some great options include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Rome apples.

2. Use the right dough

Another important factor in making an apple braid is the type of dough you use. You want a dough that is easy to work with, yet strong enough to hold up the weight of the apples. Many recipes call for a sweet dough, which is a great choice as it complements the tartness of the apples. You can also experiment with adding spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough, which can add an extra layer of flavor to your recipe.

3. Don't skimp on the filling

The filling is the star of the show when it comes to apple braids, so don't skimp on it! You want to make sure you have enough apples to fill the braid, while still leaving enough room for the dough to rise. Many recipes call for a mixture of apples, sugar, and spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. You can also experiment with adding other fruits, such as pears or cranberries, to your filling to give it even more flavor.

4. Master the braiding technique

The braiding technique is what gives the apple braid its unique and beautiful appearance. While it may take a little practice to master, once you have the technique down, it's actually quite easy. Start by rolling out your dough into a rectangle, then spread your filling down the center. Cut slits along the sides of the dough, then fold them over the filling in a crisscross pattern. Brush with an egg wash, then bake in the oven until golden brown.

5. Experiment with toppings

While traditional apple braids are delicious on their own, you can also experiment with adding different toppings to give them even more flavor. Some great options include a drizzle of icing or caramel sauce, chopped nuts such as walnuts or pecans, or even a sprinkle of coarse sugar for a little extra crunch.

Conclusion

Making the perfect apple braid recipe may take some practice, but with these valuable tips, you'll be sure to create a delicious and mouthwatering pastry that everyone will love. Remember to choose the right apples, use the right dough, and don't skimp on the filling. Mastering the braiding technique and experimenting with toppings can also take your apple braid to the next level. Happy baking!
