BUNNEH'S BUNNY RABBIT TREATS

Bunneh's Bunny Rabbit Treats image

Bunneh LOVES these! After he has his treat, he thanks me by licking a hole in my arm, or darned near! You could replace the carrot with apple or pear, but keep in mind these are treats, not a regular diet/food, and should be given sparingly. For a bunny, 1 tablespoon of fruit a day is the maximum you should give your furball. Timothy hay pellets are the best type of pellets, Zupreem the best brand. Recipe adapted from Brenda Plaxton's.

Time 35m

Yield 30 treats, approximately, 30 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 small carrot (pureed or minced VERY fine)
1/2 banana (mashed until very creamy)
1 tablespoon honey
1/4 cup rabbit pellets, ground finely in a coffee grinder
1/4 cup ground old fashioned oats, ground finely in a coffee grinder

Steps:

  • Mix pureed carrot, mashed banana and honey in a medium bowl.
  • Add ground pellets and ground oats. Mix until blended.
  • Knead in your hands for 1-2 minutes. It'll probably be pretty sticky.
  • Place dough on large piece of parchment paper and cover with plastic wrap. Roll dough to about 1/8" thickness. Peel off plastic wrap.
  • Score flattened dough with large knife in 1-inch cross sections like tiles. You're not separating the tiles, just scoring them for easy breaking apart later.
  • Transfer parchment onto cookie sheet and bake at 325F for about 30-40 minutes, checking to make sure they don't over-brown.
  • Turn off the oven, leaving the cookie sheet in the oven for another hour until the treats dry to crispness.
  • Remove from oven and cool completely on cooling rack.
  • Break the tiles apart - easy! - and store in a zip lock bag in the fridge.
  • Give one to your bunny on each day that he/she is adorable. (That's every day, of course!).

Rabbits, like humans, require a balanced diet to maintain their health and well-being. While hay, fresh vegetables, and water should be the staple components of a rabbit's diet, fruits can be given as an occasional treat. Among the fruits, apples and bananas are favorites of many bunny rabbits, and they can be used to make delicious treats. However, before you start making apple banana treats for your rabbit, there are some valuable tips you should keep in mind. Here are some of the most important ones:

Tip #1: Use Organic, Fresh Fruits

When making apple banana treats for bunny rabbits, it's essential to choose high-quality, organic fruits. This is because conventional fruits often contain harmful pesticides and chemicals that can be harmful to rabbits. Organic fruits, on the other hand, are grown without the use of synthetic chemicals, making them safer for rabbits to consume. Furthermore, make sure the fruits you choose are fresh and ripe. Do not use over-ripe or spoiled fruits, as they can cause digestive issues and other health problems in rabbits. Always wash the fruits thoroughly before using them to remove any dirt, dust, or pesticides.

Tip #2: Use the Right Proportions

While fruits can be a great treat for rabbits, it's important to limit their portion sizes. Fruits are high in sugar and can cause weight gain and other health issues if given in excess. Generally, fruits should make up no more than 10% of a rabbit's diet. When making apple banana treats, make sure the proportions are appropriate. A good rule of thumb is to use one small slice of apple and one small slice of banana per day per rabbit. You can chop the fruits into small pieces and mix them with other treats, such as hay or vegetables, to make a nutritious and flavorful snack for your rabbit.

Tip #3: Avoid Adding Sugar or Other Additives

When making apple banana treats for bunny rabbits, it's crucial to avoid adding any sugar or other additives. While it may be tempting to sweeten the treats, rabbits do not need extra sugar and can develop health problems if given sweets or sugary products. Instead, stick to natural fruits and avoid adding any artificial flavors, colors, or other additives. You can add some fresh herbs, such as mint or basil, to make the treats more flavorful and nutritious.

Tip #4: Serve the Treats in Moderation

While apple banana treats can be a great way to reward your rabbit, it's important to serve them in moderation. As mentioned earlier, fruits should only make up a small portion of a rabbit's diet. Overfeeding fruits can lead to digestive issues, obesity, and other health problems. Therefore, it's best to limit the treats to once a day or a couple of times a week. You can feed the treats to your rabbit by hand, or you can use them as a topping for hay or other veggies.

Tip #5: Store the Treats Properly

When making apple banana treats for bunny rabbits, it's important to store them properly to keep them fresh and nutritious. Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator to prevent them from becoming spoiled or contaminated. It's also important to note that rabbits have a sensitive digestive system and can develop health issues if given spoiled or contaminated food. Therefore, always check the treats before feeding them to your rabbit and discard any moldy or spoiled pieces.
Conclusion:
Apple banana treats can be a great way to reward your bunny rabbit and add some variety to their diet. However, it's essential to follow the above tips when making and serving the treats to ensure they are safe and healthy for your rabbit. Always use organic, fresh fruits in the right proportions, and avoid adding any sugar or additives. Serve the treats in moderation and store them properly to keep them fresh and nutritious. By following these tips, you can make delicious apple banana treats for your bunny rabbit that they will love and that will contribute to their overall health and well-being.
