This soup is a staple in the Appenzell region of Switzerland, particularly during the colder months when people need something warm and comforting to keep them going. In this article, we will provide you with valuable tips to consider when making Appenzell style oat soup recipes.

Tips for making Appenzell style oat soup

1. Use high-quality ingredients
To make a delicious Appenzell style oat soup, you need to invest in high-quality ingredients. Fresh veggies, wholesome oats, and spices should be of good quality to ensure the final product is flavorful and nutritious. Use fresh parsley, thyme or rosemary, and chopped garlic or onion for a savory taste. Using high-quality beef or chicken broth will also add flavor and depth to the soup.
2. Soak the oats overnight
One of the tricks to making a smooth and creamy oat soup is to soak your oats overnight. Soaking your oats softens them, making them easier to blend and giving the soup a smooth, creamy texture. If you don't have time to soak your oats, you can cook them in boiling water for 5 to 7 minutes before adding them to the soup.
3. Sautee your veggies
Sauteed veggies are essential in giving the soup its rich, hearty flavor. Before boiling the veggies, saute them in a little bit of butter, which helps to bring out their natural sweetness and enhance their flavor. You can also add other ingredients such as mushrooms, leeks or bacon, to make the soup even more luxurious.
4. Don't forget the cheese
Appenzell style oat soup is traditionally made with Appenzell cheese, a Swiss cheese with a nutty and tangy flavor. The cheese adds richness and depth to the soup. However, if you can’t find Appenzell cheese, you can use other cheeses such as Gruyere, Parmesan, or Cheddar.
5. Use an immersion blender
An immersion blender is a powerful tool when making oat soup. It helps to blend the oats and veggies, creating a smooth and creamy texture. You can also use a food processor or a blender, but an immersion blender is easier to use and clean.
6. Garnish your soup
A little bit of garnish can go a long way in enhancing the look and taste of your oat soup. You can use chopped parsley or chives, croutons, sour cream, or shredded cheese to garnish your soup. Using something crunchy like croutons or toasted almonds can also give the soup a nice contrast of textures.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Appenzell style oat soup is a delicious and healthy dish that can be enjoyed by everyone. It is easy to make, and you can experiment with different ingredients to make it your own. However, it is essential to use high-quality ingredients, sautee your veggies, and soak your oats overnight to ensure that your soup is flavorful and creamy. Lastly, don't forget to garnish your soup to make it look irresistible.
