HOT & MELTY OVEN BAKED HAM & SWISS SANDWICHES

Hot & Melty Oven Baked Ham & Swiss Sandwiches image

I made 36 of these for our neighborhood Holiday House Hop Party. They were a huge hit last year so I searched for a recipe to present again this year. I bought a good deli ham and had it shaved, I think it's easier to bit into and enjoy. You can use as much ham & cheese as you like. If it fits on the buns, go for it! The buttery mustard sauce is amazing! I do not add the poppy seeds, they look pretty but nobody likes speckled teeth! I tripled the recipe but only doubled the sauce and still had a tiny bit left over. Go ahead and slather it all on, these are yummy! Inspired by recipe from Bunsinmyoven.com

Time 30m

Yield 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 (12 count) package kings hawaiian rolls
18 slices swiss cheese, 1/2 slice per sandwich
16 ounces sliced ham, per 24 sandwiches, I use a 1/2 # for 12 rolls. Use a good deli ham
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon stone ground grainy mustard, use a good brown grainy mustard
1 teaspoon poppy seed (optional)
2 teaspoons onion flakes, dried
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • On low heat, in a small sauce pan add butter, mustard, poppy seeds, onion flakes & Worcestershire sauce. Heat until butter is melted and onion hydrated, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat & set aside.
  • Slice all of the rolls in half and place the bottom halves in a 9x13 baking dish or foil lined baking sheet. Lightly brush butter sauce on bottom half of rolls, you don't need much.
  • Divide the shaved ham slices and cheese among all the bottom half of the sliced rolls. Cover with the top half of roll.
  • Spoon the buttery mustard sauce over the tops of the sandwiches. Cover with foil and refrigerate until ready to bake.
  • Let sit overnight or at least one hour.
  • Pre-heated oven to 350°F.
  • Bake on the middle oven rack, covered for 10 minutes, remove foil, bake for an additional 5 minutes (total of 15 minutes baking time) until warmed through and the cheese is gooey and melty. Add an additional minute or 2 if needed.

This dip is a crowd-pleaser and can be served at any party or gathering. It is made with ham, Swiss cheese, cream cheese, and other ingredients that give it a creamy and savory taste. However, there are some tips that you should keep in mind when you make this dip to ensure that it turns out perfectly.

Tips for Making Anne's Hot Ham and Swiss Dip

Choose the Right Ingredients
One of the most important things when making Anne's Hot Ham and Swiss Dip is to choose the right ingredients. You should use quality ham that is not too salty, and Swiss cheese that has a good flavor, but not overpowering. When it comes to the cream cheese, it is recommended that you use full-fat instead of the low-fat or fat-free version, as it will ensure that the dip is creamy and rich.
Grate the Cheese
To make sure that the cheese melts evenly and the dip has a smooth texture, it is important to grate the cheese finely. You can use a food processor or a box grater to grate both the Swiss cheese and cream cheese. This will allow them to blend together smoothly, and give the dip a luscious texture.
Use Mayonnaise to Add Moisture
In Anne's Hot Ham and Swiss Dip recipe, mayonnaise is added to provide moisture and creaminess. It is recommended that you use full-fat mayonnaise, as it will help to keep the dip creamy and balanced. You can also add a little bit of sour cream to the mix if you prefer a tangy flavor. By adding mayonnaise, it will ensure that the dip is easier to dip and more flavorful.
Cut the Ham into Small Pieces
To ensure that the ham blends well with the other ingredients, it is recommended that you cut it into small pieces. This will allow it to be distributed evenly and can be easily scooped up. Cutting the ham into small pieces also ensures that it visibly looks like an ingredient in the dip, rather than being clumped together.
Season the Dip
To give the dip an extra flavor kick, it is important to season it properly. As the ham and Swiss cheese have their distinct flavors, to balance out the flavor profile, it is recommended that you add garlic powder, onion powder, and ground mustard. This will help balance the flavor, and give the dip an extra bit of pizzazz.
Bake until Golden and Bubbly
To get the perfect texture for the dip, bake it in the oven until it is golden brown and bubbly. Make sure that you don't overcook it, as it should still be soft and creamy. It is recommended that you keep an eye on the dip while it bakes, and take it out of the oven when it is done.
Serve with the Right Dippers
The right dippers can make all the difference when serving Anne's Hot Ham and Swiss Dip. You can serve a variety of options, such as crackers, bread, or vegetables. The best way to serve the dip is to provide different types of dippers, allowing your guests to choose their favorite.

Conclusion

Anne's Hot Ham and Swiss Dip is a delicious appetizer that is perfect for any gathering or party. To ensure that it turns out perfectly, it's important to follow the tips outlined here. By choosing the right ingredients, cutting the ham into small pieces, and seasoning the dip properly, you can create a dish that is sure to impress anyone who takes a bite. So, go ahead and make some hot ham and Swiss dip, and you'll have a guaranteed crowd-pleaser in no time!
