Angel Hair With Olives and Brussels Sprouts image

Modified from "Isa Does It" by Isa Chandra Moskowitz's Olive Angel Hair with Seared Brussels Sprouts. It was SO yummy, but I used less oil and salt, added more Brussels sprouts and used marjoram instead of thyme. Three of us polished it off.

Time 30m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 1/2 cups Brussels sprouts, quartered
8 ounces angel hair pasta
1/2 cup walnuts
1 medium yellow onion, quartered and thinly sliced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 -5 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon marjoram or 1 teaspoon rosemary
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 fresh ground pepper (to taste)
1/2 cup kalamata olive, coarsely chopped
1/2-1 cup low sodium vegetable broth
2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar or 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Steps:

  • For a one pot meal: First, toast the walnuts in the bottom of a large heavy pot over medium heat for about 5 minutes, tossing occasionally. Remove to a cutting board.
  • Add water to the pot for the pasta and bring to a boil. Before adding the pasta, steam the Brussels sprouts over the boiling water (put in a metal strainer on top of the pot and cover) for 3 minutes. Set aside the Brussels sprouts.
  • Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  • Rinse the pot. Turn up the heat to medium-high. Add 1 T olive oil and a pinch of the salt and saute the onion until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the Brussels sprouts to the pan. The Brussels sprouts should touch the bottom of the pan in order to be seared. Cook for about 5 minutes until sprouts are seared on at least one side.
  • Add garlic and other seasonings and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  • Add the olives, the remaining salt, 1/2 cup of the broth, and vinegar. Mix well. Add pasta and toss. Add more broth if needed. Taste for seasoning and adjust as needed. Top with walnuts and serve.

Angel hair pasta is a healthy alternative to other types of pasta. With a low glycemic index, it has a minimal impact on blood sugar levels, making it ideal for those with diabetes. Additionally, it is low in calories and high in protein, making it a perfect meal for those watching their weight. Furthermore, it is low in fat and cholesterol-free, which is excellent for heart health.

Health Benefits of Walnuts:

Walnuts, too, have many health benefits. First and foremost is their high omega-3 fatty acid content, which has been shown to improve brain health and reduce inflammation. They are also high in antioxidants, which help protect cells from damage and reduce the risk of cancer. Additionally, they are an excellent source of protein, fiber, and healthy fats, making them an excellent addition to a balanced diet.

Angel Hair with Walnuts Recipes:

There are many different ways to incorporate walnuts into an angel hair pasta dish. One of the most popular is to make an angel hair carbonara with walnuts. To make this dish, cook the pasta according to package directions, then reserve some of the pasta water. In a separate pan, cook some chopped bacon until crispy, then add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. Whisk together some eggs, parmesan cheese, and black pepper in a bowl. Drain the pasta and add it to the bacon pan along with some of the reserved pasta water. Remove the pan from heat and pour in the egg mixture, stirring quickly to coat the pasta. Add some chopped walnuts for crunch and serve immediately. Another way to enjoy angel hair with walnuts is to make a walnut pesto. To make this dish, toast some walnuts in a pan until they are fragrant, then add them to a food processor with some garlic, basil leaves, olive oil, parmesan cheese, and salt. Pulse until the pesto is smooth and creamy. Cook the pasta according to package directions and reserve some of the pasta water. Toss the pasta with the pesto, adding some of the reserved pasta water to thin out the pesto as needed. Serve the pasta hot, topped with additional walnuts and parmesan cheese. Lastly, another tasty angel hair with walnuts recipe is to make a walnut cream sauce. To make this dish, cook the pasta according to package directions and set aside. In a separate pan, cook some shallots and garlic in some olive oil until softened. Add in some heavy cream and cook until it has thickened slightly. Stir in some chopped walnuts and grated parmesan cheese, and season with salt and pepper. Toss the pasta with the sauce until it is well coated, then serve immediately.

Angel hair pasta is a type of thin spaghetti that is popular due to its delicate texture and ability to go well with a wide variety of sauces and ingredients. One such ingredient that pairs beautifully with angel hair pasta is walnuts. Walnuts add a delicious crunch and nutty flavor to the dish. In this article, we will share valuable tips for making angel hair with walnuts recipes that are sure to impress!

1. Toast the Walnuts

Toasting walnuts brings out their full flavor and gives them a satisfying crunch. Be sure to toast your walnuts before using them in your angel hair pasta dish. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and spread the walnuts out on a baking sheet. Bake them for 7-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and fragrant. Once they have cooled, chop them into small pieces and set them aside.

2. Use Fresh Ingredients

When making any pasta dish, it's important to use fresh ingredients for the best possible flavor. Use fresh garlic, shallots, and herbs to really elevate the flavor of your angel hair pasta with walnuts recipe.

3. Cook the Angel Hair to Al Dente

Angel hair pasta cooks quickly, usually in about 4-5 minutes. Be sure not to overcook it - you want it to be al dente, which means it should still have some bite to it. Overcooked angel hair pasta can become mushy and unappetizing.

4. Reserve Some Pasta Water

When you drain the cooked pasta, be sure to reserve some of the pasta water. The starch in the water can help to thicken your sauce and make it stick to the pasta better.

5. Experiment with Different Sauces

While a simple garlic and olive oil sauce is delicious with angel hair pasta and walnuts, don't be afraid to experiment with different sauces. A creamy Alfredo sauce or a tangy pesto sauce can also work well with this dish.

6. Mix in Some Greens

Adding some greens to your angel hair pasta with walnuts recipe can give it a healthy boost and add some color to the dish. Arugula, spinach, or kale are all great options.

7. Don't Overload the Dish

Angel hair pasta with walnuts is a simple and delicious recipe, but it's important not to overload the dish with too many ingredients. Keep it simple and let the flavor of the walnuts shine through.

Conclusion

Angel hair pasta with walnuts is a delicious and easy recipe that can be adapted in many ways. The tips shared in this article will help you create a beautiful and flavorful dish. Remember to use fresh ingredients, cook the pasta to al dente, and try different sauces and greens to find your perfect combination. Enjoy!
