What Are Amish Onion Patties?
Amish onion patties are fritters made from a combination of flour, onions, eggs, and spices. The patties are fried until golden brown, resulting in a crispy exterior and soft and savory interior. They are often served as a snack or side dish alongside other Amish favorites, such as homemade applesauce, baked beans, or hearty soups.Ingredients
The ingredients for Amish onion patties are simple and can be found in any grocery store. They include:- 2 large onions, chopped
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1/2 cup milk
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
To make Amish onion patties, follow these simple steps:- Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-high heat.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Add chopped onions to the dry mixture and stir until the onions are well coated.
- Add beaten eggs and milk to the mixing bowl and stir until a thick batter forms.
- Using a tablespoon, scoop the batter into the hot oil, forming patties approximately 2 inches in diameter.
- Fry the patties until they are golden brown, flipping them over halfway through cooking, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess oil.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Variations
There are many variations of the Amish onion patty recipe that can be customized to suit individual preferences. Some variations include:- Add shredded cheddar cheese to the batter before frying for a cheesy twist.
- Substitute wheat flour for all-purpose flour to make the patties more wholesome.
- Add chopped herbs such as thyme, rosemary, or parsley to the batter for added flavor.
- Serve patties with a dollop of sour cream or applesauce on top for a tangy and sweet contrast.
