  • Next, when you're ready to bake the bread, add the Bread ingredients to 1 cup of the starter.
  • Add and beat the bread ingredients by hand until well blended. If desired, add one cup raisins, nuts or chocolate chips.
  • Grease two loaf pans and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 325 degrees for one hour or until a toothpick in the center comes out clean.
  • Variations:.
  • If you'd like to try a different recipe, replace the cinnamon and vanilla pudding with one of the following: poppy seeds and lemon pudding, chocolate pudding and mini chocolate chips or banana pudding and chopped walnuts.
  • Enjoy!

Amish Friendship Bread: A Delicious Tradition

Amish Friendship Bread is a sweet, moist, and flavorful bread that is often shared between friends and family as a tradition. The bread is made from a starter dough that is passed down through several generations. The starter dough creates a rich and flavorful bread that is perfect for sharing and enjoying with others.

The history of Amish Friendship Bread can be traced back to the Amish communities in Pennsylvania. The Amish people believe in the power of community and sharing with others, and the tradition of Amish Friendship Bread is an example of this philosophy. Today, the bread has become a popular treat among non-Amish people as well, who enjoy the sweet taste and the sense of community that comes with sharing the bread.

What is Amish Friendship Bread Starter?

The starter dough for Amish Friendship Bread is a mixture of flour, sugar, and milk that has been fermented with yeast. The mixture is then divided into portions, and each portion is given to a friend or family member along with instructions on how to make the bread. The starter dough is considered a precious gift because it contains the yeast that is essential to making the bread.

The starter dough can be kept for several weeks, and during this time, it will ferment and develop a strong flavor. The longer the starter is kept, the stronger the flavor will be. However, the starter must be "fed" every few days with fresh milk, sugar, and flour, to keep the yeast active and alive. If the starter is not fed, it will die, and the bread will not rise.

How to Make Amish Friendship Bread

Making Amish Friendship Bread is a fun and delicious project that is perfect for sharing with friends and family. The basic recipe for the bread is simple, and you can add your own twist to create different flavors.

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the starter dough with flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and cinnamon.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, oil, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, and mix until well combined.
  3. Divide the mixture into two greased loaf pans, and sprinkle the top with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.
  4. Bake the bread in a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Let the bread cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Adding Your Own Flavors to Amish Friendship Bread

While the basic recipe for Amish Friendship Bread is delicious and flavorful, you can add your own twist to create different flavors. Here are a few ideas:

  • Chocolate: Add cocoa powder to the basic recipe for a rich chocolate flavor.
  • Cranberry: Fold fresh or dried cranberries into the batter before baking for a tart and tangy taste.
  • Lemon: Add grated lemon zest to the batter or drizzle a lemon glaze on top for a refreshing citrus flavor.
  • Apple Cinnamon: Fold chopped apples and cinnamon into the batter for a classic fall flavor.

In Conclusion

Amish Friendship Bread is a delicious and flavorful bread that has been passed down through generations of Amish families. The starter dough contains yeast that is essential to making the bread, and it must be "fed" every few days to keep the yeast active. Making the bread is a fun and enjoyable project that can be shared with friends and family. With a few tweaks, you can create many different flavors of Amish Friendship Bread.
