2 - 12 oz. jars maraschino cherries (drained (reserve juice), minced, squeezed VERY dry)
1 cup butter (softened)
1 cup vegetable or canola oil
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup powdered sugar
2 large eggs
2 tsp. almond extract
2 tsp. cherry extract
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
4 tbsp. butter (melted)
1/3 cup + 1-2 tbsp. maraschino cherry juice
1 tsp. almond extract
1 tsp. cherry extract
4 - 5 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup slivered almonds (for garnish)

Steps:

  • As noted above, drain the maraschino cherries, reserving the juice (!), finely mince the cherries, and then pat/squeeze VERY dry. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, oil, and sugars until combined.
  • Beat in eggs, almond extract, cherry extract, and minced cherries.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar.
  • Gradually add flour mixture to the butter mixture, beating until just combined after each addition. Do not overmix.
  • Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  • Drop dough by teaspoonfuls onto baking sheets.
  • Bake at 375 for 8-11 minutes, or until edges and bottoms are lightly browned.
  • Remove to wire racks to cool.
  • Whisk together butter, maraschino cherry juice, and extracts.
  • Stir in 4 cups powdered sugar, mixing until smooth.

1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped pecans
1/3 cup chopped maraschino cherry
1 cup chopped dates
2 1/2 cups corn flakes

Steps:

  • Sift together flour,baking powder,soda and salt.
  • Combine the shortening and sugar then blend in the eggs.
  • Add to this mixture the milk,almond extract and vanilla.
  • Blend i the sifted dry ingredients and mix well.
  • Add the pecans,cherries and dates,and mix it well again.
  • Shape the dough into balls,using 1 level tablespoon per cookie.
  • Crush the cornflakes and roll each ball of dough in them.
  • Place the balls on greased cookie sheet and top ech one with 1/4 cherries.
  • Bake at 375 until done,about 20 minutes.

These Black Forest Cherry Cookies, are one of my favorite cookies.

2-1/2 c all purpose flour
1/4 c unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 c butter
1-1/2 c semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 c packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 (10 oz.) jar(s) maraschino cherries, drained and reserve 2 tablespoons of the juice: for frosting the cookies. (be sure to dry the chopped cherries with paper towels.)
frosting ingredients:
6 Tbsp butter, softened
1/3 c kraft marshmallow creme
2 c powdered sugar
2 Tbsp maraschino cherry juice

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • 2. In a medium size bowl whisk together thoroughly, the flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder and salt.
  • 3. In a medium size saucepan over low heat, melt the butter and 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips; stirring constantly until the chocolate chips have melted.
  • 4. Remove the pan from the heat, and cool for 10 minutes.
  • 5. Now whisk in the light brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract, until blended together.
  • 6. Add the flour mixture, and stir until smooth.
  • 7. Stir in the chopped cherries and the remaining 1/2 cup of chocolate chips.
  • 8. Drop tablespoons of cookie dough, 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets.
  • 9. Bake in oven for 10 to 12 minutes, until toothpick inserted in one of the cookies, comes out clean.
  • 10. Remove cookies to wire racks to cool completely
  • 11. To make the frosting for the cookies: In a medium size bowl beat together, the frosting ingredients. Pipe or spread frosting over each cookie. (I did sprinkle a bit of red sugar over each cookie, to make them look more festive.) Allow cookies to sit for 2 hours, before placing them in a Tupperware like container. These cookies do freeze well.
