Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 12

1/2 medium green pepper , yellow pepper and red pepper chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 medium zucchini, chopped
1 lb hamburg
1/4 c parmesan cheese
1 Tbsp butter
4 stick celery
1 can(s) tomato paste
pinch of sugar
2 c elbow macaroni, cooked
season to taste with italian seasonings, chopped jarred garlic in juice
2 c water

Steps:

  • 1. In large saucepan, I use my cast iron fry pan, coat with a little olive oil, add hamburg and chop it all up on medium heat. While that is cooking cut up your peppers, onion and zucchini and celery. Drain fat from pan and add your peppers and onions to hamburg and fry them lightly, then add 1 cup of water and your zucchini and celery pushing them down into the water to simmer.
  • 2. When tender add tomato paste and seasonings and stir to mix all together.
  • 3. Add your cooked elbow macaroni and 1 cup of water that you cooked the elbows in. I cover and let simmer to combine all flavors. When all is tender and combined, remove cover. Mix all well and add your Parmesan cheese and a little sugar to reduce acid. At this point I always put 1 Tablespoon of butter in as it makes the sauce smooth and silky. Before serving I sometimes sprinkle grated cheese on top as well. Muncha

The beauty of American chop suey is that it is easy to make and customizable, allowing you to add your favorite ingredients and spices. However, making American chop suey just like Mama used to make can be challenging. To help you out, we have compiled a list of valuable tips that will ensure that your American chop suey turns out just like Mama’s.

Tip 1: Use high-quality ingredients

Using high-quality ingredients is the key to making excellent American chop suey. Start by selecting high-quality ground beef with at least 80% lean meat. This will give your dish a rich, meaty taste. When selecting tomatoes, choose ripe, juicy tomatoes, preferably plum tomatoes or vine-ripened tomatoes, which will give your dish that deep, rich tomato flavor. Avoid using canned tomatoes, as they often have added salt and other preservatives that can alter the taste of your dish.
Tip 1.1: Use fresh vegetables
In addition to using high-quality ground beef and tomatoes, using fresh vegetables is crucial in making American chop suey. Use a variety of vegetables, such as onions, green bell peppers, garlic, and celery, to add flavor and texture to your dish. These vegetables also contain essential nutrients and vitamins that are beneficial to your health.
Tip 1.2: Choose the right pasta
The type of pasta you use also plays a crucial role in making American chop suey. Choose pasta with a large surface area, such as elbow macaroni or penne pasta. These pasta types are perfect for soaking up the flavorful sauce and meat.

Tip 2: Cook your ground beef first

Cooking your ground beef first is an essential step in making American chop suey. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until it is no longer pink. Drain off any excess fat, as this will make your dish greasy and unappetizing. Once the ground beef is cooked, set it aside until it is needed.
Tip 2.1: Season your ground beef
After browning your ground beef, season it with salt and pepper for added flavor. You can also add garlic powder, onion powder, or any other spice that complements the dish's flavor profile.
Tip 2.2: Use a large skillet
Using a large skillet is critical in making American chop suey. A large skillet will allow you to cook all the ingredients together and make mixing and stirring more accessible. This will prevent your dish from burning, sticking to the pan and make cleanup easier.

Tip 3: Make your tomato sauce from scratch

Making your tomato sauce from scratch is a game-changer! It adds an authentic flavor to your American chop suey that you can't get from the canned stuff. You can start by sautéing onions, garlic, and green bell peppers in a pan to soften them. Then, add the peeled and seeded tomatoes to the pan and let them cook down until the tomatoes break down, and the sauce thickens. You can make this sauce before you start cooking your ground beef, so it's ready when you need it.
Tip 3.1: Season your tomato sauce
When making your tomato sauce, season it with salt, pepper, sugar, and any other spice that complements the dish's flavors. You can also add tomato paste to the sauce to thicken it and add more tomato flavor.
Tip 3.2: Experiment with flavors
There are various ways to make the tomato sauce for your American chop suey. Feel free to experiment with different herbs, such as thyme, rosemary, or oregano, to add unique flavors to your dish.

Tip 4: Add vegetables and spices

Once you have cooked your ground beef and tomato sauce, add your vegetables and spices to the skillet. Sauté the vegetables for a few minutes until they are soft and fragrant. Then, add the tomato sauce, cooked ground beef, and any additional spices to the skillet.
Tip 4.1: Add Worcestershire sauce
Worcestershire sauce is a fantastic condiment that you can add to your American chop suey to give it a bold, tangy flavor. Add a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce to the skillet while the dish cooks and let it simmer for a few minutes.
Tip 4.2: Use Italian seasoning
Italian seasoning is a blend of oregano, basil, rosemary, thyme, and marjoram. Adding Italian seasoning to your American chop suey can give it a vibrant, herbaceous flavor that will complement the flavors of the dish.

Tip 5: Add the pasta last

Once all the ingredients are in the skillet, add the cooked pasta last. Ensure that the pasta is cooked al dente to prevent it from becoming mushy or overcooked in the skillet's heat. Once the pasta is added, stir the dish until everything is combined and heated through.
Tip 5.1: Rinse your pasta
After cooking your pasta, rinse it with cold water to remove excess starch, which can make your dish sticky and clumpy. Rinsing your pasta will also prevent it from becoming overcooked after being added to your skillet.
Tip 5.2: Let the dish simmer
After adding the pasta, let the dish simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. This will give your American chop suey a rich, deep flavor that will make you come back for seconds.

Conclusion:

American chop suey is a delicious, hearty meal that can be customized to your liking. By following these valuable tips, you can make American chop suey just like Mama used to make. Always use high-quality ingredients, cook your ground beef first, make your tomato sauce from scratch, add vegetables and spices, and add the pasta last. With these tips, you can make a delicious, filling meal that is perfect for any occasion.
