HEAVENLY HASH FRUIT SALAD

Heavenly Hash Fruit Salad image

We love how this fruit salad recipe has been passed through generations and adapted along the way. The mixture of fruit, the crunch of the apples, and the texture of the walnuts make this an amazing fruit salad. The oranges and pineapple are nicely balanced with the other fruit flavors. Things get special with the creamy...

SALAD INGREDIENTS
1 bunch seedless white grapes, removed from stem and washed
1 bunch seedless dark grapes, removed from stems and washed
4-5 medium delicious apples, cored, sliced into 8th's, and then into about 1/2 inch pieces. Leave skin on for color and extra fiber. (Peel if you wish.)
1 bottle maraschino cherries, seeded, stemmed and well drained, 8 oz
2 can(s) mandarin orange sections, well drained, 10.5 oz each
1 bunch celery hearts, cut into small cubes (leaves removed)
2 can(s) pineapple chunks, very well drained, 20 oz each
1 bunch bananas (4-5 medium), peeled and sliced
1 pkg miniature marshmallows (or large marshmallows cut into fourths w/ kitchen scissors)
1 1/2 lb walnut pieces
SALAD DRESSING
16 oz Cool Whip topping, thawed, two 8 oz tubs
2-1/2 c mayonnaise, light
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
2 Tbsp granulated sugar (or to taste)
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 Tbsp rum or almond extract (your choice, to taste)

Steps:

  • 1. FIRST, you will need 1 very large bowl for the salad and a medium mixing bowl for mixing dressing. (My VERY LARGE bowl is about 15 inches in diameter, and about 10 inches tall.) Wash and drain all fresh fruits and celery; allow to drain until as dry as possible. Drain all canned ingredients well.
  • 2. Remove grapes from stems, cut in half if you wish, and add to the large mixing bowl. Cut cherries in half, if you wish (and remove stems, if needed). Add all to the salad bowl, along with drained canned orange segments and pineapple chunks.
  • 3. Cut up apples and celery as directed in the ingredients list. dd to the large bowl (as per above).
  • 4. Peel and slice bananas, and add to the salad bowl.
  • 5. If using large marshmallows, cut them into quarters with kitchen shears into the salad bowl. If using miniature marshmallows, just add them to the salad bowl.
  • 6. Add walnut pieces to the salad bowl.
  • 7. To make the salad dressing, place thawed Cool Whip in a medium mixing bowl. Add mayonnaise and whisk them together. Add sugar, spices, and rum (or almond) extract.
  • 8. Mix the dressing well to thoroughly combined.
  • 9. Pour dressing over salad in a large bowl.
  • 10. Gently fold all ingredients with a rubber spatula until well coated with dressing.
  • 11. Cover and refrigerate for 1-2 hours before serving.

GREAT GRANDMA'S HEAVENLY HASH

Great Grandma's Heavenly Hash image

My great grandmother who was born in the late 1800's passed this recipe down to my Dad who has carried on the tradition of making this lusciously rich desert every Thanksgiving and Christmas as do I now. Its easy but its so good!

Categories     Fruit Desserts

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 jar(s) marischino cherries in the juice
1 can(s) crushed pineapple
1 pkg kraft jet puffed marshmallows (not the miniature ones)
2-3 medium banana's
1/4 c sugar
1/2 qt whipping cream

Steps:

  • 1. Pour whipping cream in bowl (preferably glass cause plastic can have a bit of grease and the cream wont take if there's any oil or grease) and whip with an electric mixer until stiff peaks start to form. The same consistency as what whipped cream is supposed to be, obviously, lol.
  • 2. You'll need a good pair of scissors and a glass of water. Using clean scissors snip the marshmallows in half or quarters if you like but halves are easiest, dipping the scissors in the water to cut the marshmallows easier as it gets sticky. The miniature Marshmallows tend to get mushy too quickly so that's the reason I use the big marshmallows.
  • 3. Drain and add pineapple. Discard juice.
  • 4. Take the cherries out of the jar and save the juice. Cut the cherries over the bowl so the juice drips into the mixture.
  • 5. Slice bananas. I cut them in half down to the bottom of the peel and then cross cut them into 4ths but you can slice them how you like. Add to mixture. (I cut everything over the bowl and just let it fall right in).
  • 6. Give the mixture a stir or two and then add a little at a time, take your leftover cherry juice and a splash or two and mix it up til its nice and pink and has a slight cherry taste to it.
  • 7. Cover and Refrigerate for 3-4 hours or until marshmallows are softened. The only drawback to this dish is that the bananas will tend to brown by the next day. Its still good but over a couple of days it can get a little watery/oily texture to it. Not much you can do about that. However, the stuff never is around that long anyway because the family eats it up pretty quick. You can also add other things to this recipe like grapes, raisins or nuts. It's up to you. You can also substitute Cool Whip for the whipping cream but I like the real thing. Enjoy!
  • 8. *if you want to make double the recipe, obviously you're going to double the ingredients. For heart patients my father happens to be one and they told him to use Cool Whip instead of whipping cream. I love the real thing though.

In this article, we will be providing some valuable tips that will help you make a perfect ambrosia heavenly hash recipe.

Tips for Making Ambrosia Heavenly Hash Recipe

1. Use Fresh Fruits
The freshness of the fruits used in this dessert is critical. If the fruits are not fresh, the dessert will not be as delicious as it ought to be. Therefore, you should always use fresh fruits when making ambrosia heavenly hash.
2. Use Cream Cheese
Cream cheese is one critical ingredient in creating the perfect ambrosia heavenly hash. It adds a tangy and creamy flavor to the dessert, which is loved by many. Ensure that you use cream cheese that is soft and has been set at room temperature before using it.
3. Use Whipped Cream
Whipped cream is another critical ingredient in creating the perfect ambrosia heavenly hash. It makes the dessert light and fluffy, adding to its overall texture. You can use whipped cream instead of whipped topping, which is often used in many recipes.
4. Add Nuts and Marshmallows
Adding nuts and marshmallows to your ambrosia heavenly hash is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. Both ingredients add a crunch and texture that cannot be achieved by other ingredients. If you choose to add these ingredients, ensure they are evenly distributed in the dessert.
5. Use Canned Pineapple
Using canned pineapple is preferable to fresh pineapples when making ambrosia heavenly hash. Canned pineapples are significantly softer and have a sweeter taste, making them perfect for this dessert. Drain the pineapple juice before using it.
6. Don't Overmix
When mixing the ingredients, do not overmix. Overmixing can cause the whipped cream to deflate, making the dessert heavy and dense. Mix the ingredients just enough to combine them.
7. Chill before Serving
After making your ambrosia heavenly hash, you should chill it before serving. The chilling process allows the ingredients to fuse, creating a flavor that is unique to the dessert.
8. Customize to Your Taste
You can customize your ambrosia heavenly hash to fit your taste. For instance, you can add more fruits or reduce the amount of whipped cream used. Be creative and make the dessert your own.
9. Avoid Certain Fruits
Some fruits do not work well when making ambrosia heavenly hash. For instance, watery fruits like watermelon and oranges can make the dessert soggy. As such, consider avoiding such fruits.
10. Use a Glass Bowl
Serving your ambrosia heavenly hash in a glass bowl adds to its overall appeal. The glass bowl allows you to showcase the different layers of the dessert, making it even more attractive.

Conclusion

Ambrosia heavenly hash is undoubtedly one of the most loved desserts in America. It is sweet, tangy, and creamy, providing a different flavor profile that cannot be achieved by other desserts. However, creating the perfect ambrosia heavenly hash requires a few tricks to get it right. With the above tips, you can make a perfect ambrosia heavenly hash, customized to your taste.
