Time 2h40m

Yield 32

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 (.25 ounce) packages quick-rise yeast
4 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2 tablespoons salt
¾ cup white sugar
1 cup pareve margarine, melted
4 eggs
12 cups bread flour, or as needed
1 egg
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup sesame seeds, divided

Steps:

  • Sprinkle the yeast over the water in a large bowl, and stir gently to moisten the yeast. Stir in salt, sugar, margarine, and 4 eggs, and beat well. Gradually mix in the flour, 1 cup at a time, up to 12 cups, until the dough becomes slightly tacky but not wet. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, and knead until smooth and elastic, 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Grease baking sheets, or line them with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Cut the bread dough into 4 equal-sized pieces (or 2 pieces to make 2 large loaves). Cut each piece into thirds for 3-strand braided loaves. Working on a floured surface, roll the small dough pieces into ropes about the thickness of your thumb and about 12 inches long. Ropes should be fatter in the middle and thinner at the ends. Pinch 3 ropes together at the top and braid them. Starting with the strand to the right, move it to the left over the middle strand (that strand becomes the new middle strand.) Take the strand farthest to the left, and move it over the new middle strand. Continue braiding, alternating sides each time, until the loaf is braided, and pinch the ends together and fold them underneath for a neat look. Repeat for the remaining loaves.
  • Place the loaves onto the prepared baking sheets, and let rise until double in size, 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  • Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Whisk 1 egg with vanilla extract in a small bowl, and brush the loaves with the egg wash. Sprinkle each loaf with about 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the tops are shiny and golden brown, about 30 minutes. Let cool before slicing.

Challah bread is a traditional bread that originated in Jewish culture and is often eaten on the Sabbath and other holidays. It is a braided bread that is rich and slightly sweet. An amazing fast rise challah bread is a perfect recipe for those who do not have much time to wait for dough to rise. This version of challah bread can be made in just a few hours, making it perfect for busy weekdays or impromptu gatherings. In this article, we will share some valuable tips that can help you make an amazing fast rise challah bread in one small loaf. Tip #1: Use Bread Flour Using bread flour for your challah bread recipe is one of the most important tips you can implement. Bread flour contains more gluten than all-purpose flour, which makes it perfect for making bread. The extra gluten in bread flour helps the dough rise better and gives the bread a better texture. So, if you want your challah bread to be light and fluffy, make sure to use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour. Tip #2: Use Warm Water It is important to use warm water when making challah bread. Warm water activates the yeast, which helps the dough to rise. If the water is too cold, the dough will take longer to rise. However, if the water is too hot, it can kill the yeast. So, make sure to use water that is warm but not too hot. Tip #3: Use Fresh Yeast Using fresh yeast is another important tip when making challah bread. Fresh yeast is more potent than dry yeast, and it helps the bread to rise better. If you use dry yeast, it is important to activate it before adding it to the dough. To activate dry yeast, mix it with warm water and sugar and let it sit for a few minutes until it becomes frothy. If the yeast does not become frothy, it may be expired, and you will need to use fresh yeast instead. Tip #4: Add Honey Adding honey to your challah bread recipe is a great way to add a touch of sweetness to the bread. It also helps the bread to brown better when baking. You can substitute honey with sugar if you do not have honey. But if you are using sugar, make sure to dissolve it in warm water before adding it to the dough. Tip #5: Use Eggs Eggs are an important ingredient when making challah bread. They help to enrich the dough and give the bread a better texture. It is best to use room temperature eggs when making the dough. If you use cold eggs, they may cause the dough to be too stiff, which will make it difficult to work with. Tip #6: Don't Overwork the Dough When making challah bread, it is important not to overwork the dough. Overworking the dough can break down the gluten, which will make the bread dense and heavy. It is best to knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic, but do not continue kneading once it has reached that point. Tip #7: Let the Dough Rise Twice To make an amazing fast rise challah bread, you need to let the dough rise twice. The first rise should be done in a warm, draft-free place. This will activate the yeast and allow the dough to double in size. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and form it into your desired shape. Let the dough rise again, and then it will be ready to bake. Tip #8: Create a Shiny Crust To create a shiny crust on your challah bread, you can brush it with an egg wash. An egg wash is made by whisking an egg with a tablespoon of water or milk. Brush the egg wash over the dough before baking it. This will give the bread a beautiful shine and a golden-brown color. Tip #9: Bake at the Right Temperature Baking challah bread at the right temperature is crucial to getting a perfect loaf. The oven should be preheated to 375°F, and the bread should be baked for 30-35 minutes. If the bread is baking too quickly on the top, you can cover it with foil for the last 10 minutes of baking. Tip #10: Let the Bread Cool Once the challah bread is finished baking, let it cool completely before slicing it. Cutting into warm bread can cause it to become gummy and dense. Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least an hour before slicing it. This will ensure that you get a nice, fluffy loaf of bread. Conclusion Making an amazing fast rise challah bread in one small loaf can be a rewarding experience. By following these valuable tips, you can make a delicious and beautiful loaf of bread in just a few hours. Using bread flour, warm water, fresh yeast, honey, eggs, and not overworking the dough are all important steps. Letting the dough rise twice, creating a shiny crust, baking at the right temperature, and letting the bread cool are other crucial steps. By using these tips, you can make a perfect challah bread that is sure to impress your family and friends.
