Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 9

4 large sweet onions
3 cups of milk or buttermilk
2/3 cup yellow cornmeal
1 2/3 cup all-purpose flour (divided)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons melted shortening
1 beaten egg
1 2/3 cups milk

Steps:

  • To keep the onion rings warm while frying subsequent batches, heat the oven to 200 F.
  • Line a baking sheet with paper towels for draining the onion rings and place another baking pan nearby for keeping them warm in the oven.
  • Peel the onions and slice them into rounds about 1/4-inch thick. Separate the rounds into rings.
  • Pour a few inches of milk or buttermilk in a large, wide bowl. Add the onion rings and let them soak for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Heat about 1 quart of vegetable oil in a deep, heavy pan or deep fryer to 365 F.
  • Meanwhile, in another bowl, combine the cornmeal, 2/3 cup of the flour, salt, pepper, melted shortening, egg, and 1 2/3 cups milk. Mix until the batter is smooth.
  • Put about 1 cup of flour in another bowl.
  • Remove some of the onion rings from the milk. Dredge them first in the plain flour and then dip them in the batter to coat.
  • Fry the onion rings in batches in the vegetable oil for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Make sure the oil is at the correct temperature and don't crowd the onions.
  • Transfer to the paper-towel-lined baking sheet to drain. Move the drained onion rings to the baking pan and place them in the preheated oven to keep warm for up to 30 minutes. You Might Also Like Battered and Deep Fried Onion Rings Balsamic Onion Jam

Time 18m

Yield 3

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, or as needed
¾ cup dry bread crumbs
seasoned salt to taste
1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  • Deep fry the rings a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove to paper towels to drain. Season with seasoning salt, and serve.

Time 25m

Yield 20-30 Rings, 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 medium onions
1/2 cup flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
shake paprika
shake seasoning salt
1/2 cup water

Steps:

  • Mix flour, baking powder, paprika, seasoning salt and water. Stir until smooth.
  • Slice onions 1/8-1/4" inch thick and seperate into rings.
  • Drop onions into batter in bowl and stir gently with a spoon. This saves time, over dipping each ring separately into batter. Make sure all onion rings are coated with batter.
  • Using a fork, drop one onion ring into fat to test temperature. Your onion ring should not cook too quickly or turn dark. If necessary, reduce temperature. You want your fried onion rings to puff up and turn golden brown, not overcook. If they over cook they will taste bitter.
  • When fat is ready, gently drop onion rings into pot or place in fryer basket and lower into fryer.
  • When onions rings are golden, using a slotted spoon lift into a metal strainer to drain. If using a fryer, simply lift the basket and allow your onion rings to drain.

Onion rings are a timeless classic that never goes out of style. Whether it’s a snack, a side dish, or a topping, onion rings always complement any dish they are served with. They are incredibly mouthwatering and addictive, especially when they are crispy, golden brown and just the right amount of salty. In this article, we’ll be exploring the world of amazing crispy fried onion rings.

Ingredients

A great onion ring recipe starts with the right ingredients. You’ll need a few onions that are perfectly ripe and have a sweet, mild flavor. For the batter, you’ll need all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and beer. You could use different types of beer for different flavors, but a lager or a pilsner works best. Finally, you’ll need vegetable oil or any other high smoke point oil for frying.

Technique

The key to making amazing crispy fried onion rings lies in the technique. You want the batter to be light, airy, and crispy, which requires minimal handling. Start by cutting the onions into ½ inch thick rings and separating them. You can dip the rings in flour to remove any moisture, then coat them in batter. Generously season the batter with salt, pepper, and other spices like paprika, chili powder, or garlic powder, if you like.

The perfect beer batter

To make the perfect beer batter, whisk the dry ingredients together in a separate bowl before gradually pouring in the beer to attain the desired consistency. You want the batter to be thick but runny enough to coat the onion rings without forming lumps. If the batter is too thick, add in small amounts of beer until it’s just right. If it’s too thin, add more flour.

The frying process

For the frying process, heat enough oil to cover the onion rings in a deep pot or frying pan. Once the oil is hot, carefully lower the onion rings into the oil, a few at a time. Fry the rings until they are golden brown and crispy, for about 2-3 minutes, then remove them from the oil using a slotted spoon or tongs, and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Variations

There are many variations that you can add to your onion rings recipe to give it some exciting flavors. For instance, you can add cheese to the batter to make cheesy onion rings. Other variations include using different batters, such as a tempura batter or a cornmeal batter, or adding in different spices such as cumin, coriander or ginger to add a little zing.

Conclusion

Fried onion rings are a crowd favorite, and with the right recipe and technique, they can be amazingly crispy and delicious. These onion rings are perfect as an appetizer, snack, side dish or even as a topping. The possibilities are endless, and with a little creativity, you can make many variations of onion rings. So go ahead, get inventive, and enjoy these crispy fried onion rings!

Onion rings are a beloved snack all around the world. With their crispy exterior and sweet, caramelized onion center, they are a great addition to any meal or snack time. However, achieving the perfect texture and flavor can be a challenge. To help you create amazing crispy fried onion rings, I have gathered some valuable tips to follow.

Use the Right Onion

The type of onion you use can greatly affect the flavor and texture of your onion rings. Sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla work especially well as they are naturally sweeter and cook more quickly. Select a large onion to ensure that the rings are large enough and not too small.

Slice the Onion Correctly

The thickness of the onion slices is a crucial factor in achieving perfect onion rings. Cut your onions to a consistent width of about ¼ inch to ensure they cook evenly. If for some reason you need to slice thicker, you may need to parboil the onions first.

Soak the Onion Slices in Buttermilk

Soaking onion slices in buttermilk before coating them is a necessary step in getting that crispy, flavorful breading. The buttermilk not only tenderizes the onion but also adds a creamy tanginess to the coating. Don't skimp on this step as the longer you soak the slices, the better your onion rings will turn out.

Season Your Flour Mixture

The flour mixture provides the outer coating of the onion rings. To enhance its flavor, add seasoning to the flour mixture. You can add basic seasoning like salt, black pepper, and garlic powder, or get creative with your own blend of spices. Some people enjoy adding seasoned breadcrumbs or cornmeal to the flour mixture to add extra texture to the coating.

Double Dip Your Onion Rings

For the crispiest onion rings, it's best to double-dip them. Dip the onion rings in the flour mixture, then in the buttermilk, and then back in the flour again. This extra coating will ensure that the onion rings are crispy and crunchy, while also being more flavorful.

Use the Right Cooking Method

There are many ways to cook onion rings, including baking, deep-frying, or using an air fryer. However, the best and most traditional method is deep-frying. Deep-frying at the right temperature (375°F) will ensure that your onion rings cook evenly and develop a crispy coating.

Don't Overcrowd the Oil

When frying onion rings, make sure not to overcrowd the oil. The onion rings should not touch each other as this will cause them to stick together, which could damage the breading. Frying in small batches, in a single layer, is the key to achieving crispy onion rings.

Drain the Onion Rings Properly

Once your onion rings are done frying, let them drain on a paper towel-lined plate to remove any excess oil. This will help them maintain their crispiness. If you need to keep them warm while frying additional batches, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet in a low-temperature oven, around 200°F, until ready to serve.

Conclusion

With these valuable tips, you can make amazing crispy fried onion rings that everyone will love. From using the right onion and slicing it correctly to double dipping and frying the onions at the right temperature, these tips will help you create the perfect onion rings every time. So, next time you want to enjoy onion rings, don't hesitate to put these tips into action!
