SOUTHWESTERN CHICKEN PINWHEELS

I wanted to make pinwheels for our annual Halloween party, but was in a "southwestern" mood, so I came up with this recipe. Everyone at the party enjoyed it - hope you do too!

Categories     Potluck

Time 55m

Yield 48 slices, 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

8 large sun-dried tomato tortillas
16 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 (1 1/4 ounce) packet taco seasoning
2 cooked boneless skinless chicken breasts, chopped fine
15 ounces black beans, drained and rinsed
2 -3 green onions, chopped
1 large tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1 cup tex-mex cheese

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, mix together the cream cheese and taco seasoning until well blended.
  • Spread evenly onto the tortillas.
  • Next add the black beans, chicken, onions tomatoes and cheese in a thin layer over each tortilla - don't add too much of the toppings or else they will be hard to roll up.
  • Roll tightly in cling wrap and refrigerate for 8 hrs or overnight.
  • Slice into 1 inch slices and serve.
  • Note - it is easier to slice if you place them in the freezer for 1/2 hr or so first.
  • ** I only use about 1/2 - 3/4 of the can of beans, it all depends on how much you like them **.
  • ** I only use about 1/2 the package of taco seasoning as well as I find a full packet to be a little too salty **.

These appetizers really look and taste great! And they're really simple to make as well. The recipe can easily be doubled or tripled depending on how big a crowd your are making it for. Try using both green and red tortillas for a nice colorful platter. Cook time is for the filling's chill time.

Tips for Making Delicious Alouette Southwestern Pinwheels

Alouette Southwestern Pinwheels are an easy and delicious appetizer that can be served at any occasion. They are made with Alouette Garlic & Herbs Cheese Spread, Southwest seasoning, cream cheese, and tortillas. Here are some tips to make sure that your Alouette Southwestern Pinwheels turn out perfect every time.
1. Let the Cream Cheese and Alouette Cheese Spread sit at room temperature
It's important to let the cream cheese and Alouette Cheese Spread sit at room temperature before using them in the recipe. This will make them easier to blend together and make the mixture smooth. Room temperature cream cheese and cheese spread will also help in rolling the tortillas without cracking.
2. Use a food processor to mix the ingredients
Mixing the ingredients in a food processor helps to create a smooth and even mixture. It also saves time by eliminating the need to chop the garlic and herbs used in the Alouette Cheese Spread. You can also use a hand-held mixer, but make sure to mix the ingredients thoroughly.
3. Use a high-quality Southwest seasoning blend
The Southwest seasoning blend used in this recipe is what gives the pinwheels their delicious flavor. Choose a high-quality blend that includes a mix of spices such as chili powder, cumin, paprika, and garlic powder. You can also make your own seasoning blend using your preferred spice ratios.
4. Use large, soft tortillas
Using large, soft tortillas is essential for making perfect Alouette Southwestern Pinwheels. Large tortillas are easier to roll and will hold more of the cream cheese filling. The tortillas should be soft and pliable, so they won't crack when rolling the pinwheels. You can choose between plain or flavored tortillas such as spinach, tomato, or jalapeno.
5. Spread the mixture evenly on the tortilla
To ensure that the filling is evenly distributed, spread it evenly on the tortilla. This will prevent the filling from moving around during rolling, and will help give each pinwheel a consistent flavor. Spread the mixture to about a 1/2 inch from the edge of the tortilla to prevent the filling from spilling out.
6. Roll the tortillas tightly
When rolling Alouette Southwestern Pinwheels, it's important to roll them tightly. This will keep the filling inside and prevent the pinwheels from falling apart. Start rolling from one end of the tortilla and roll it tightly until you reach the other end. To make a perfect roll, tuck in the edges of the tortilla as you roll.
7. Chill the rolled tortillas before cutting
Chilling the rolled tortillas before cutting them helps to firm them up, making them easier to slice. Wrap each rolled tortilla tightly in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour. This will make the slicing process easier and prevent the pinwheels from falling apart.
8. Slice the pinwheels into even pieces
When slicing the pinwheels, make sure to slice them into even pieces. This will make them look more attractive and professional. A serrated knife works best for slicing the tortillas. Choose the size of the pinwheel to match the occasion.
9. Serve the pinwheels with a dipping sauce
Alouette Southwestern Pinwheels taste great on their own, but serving them with a dipping sauce can take them to the next level. A ranch or salsa dipping sauce is a great choice, as it complements the Southwest flavors in the pinwheel.
10. Get creative with the filling
While the Alouette Southwestern Pinwheel recipe is delicious as written, you can also get creative with the filling. Consider adding cooked chicken, black beans, corn, or chopped green chilies to give the pinwheels new flavor dimensions. You can also substitute the Alouette Garlic & Herbs Cheese Spread for other flavors such as Sundried Tomato & Basil or Jalapeno & Habanero. With these tips, you can easily make and serve delicious Alouette Southwestern Pinwheels that are sure to be a hit at any party. Enjoy!
