HAWAIIAN SAUSAGE SKILLET

Hawaiian Sausage Skillet image

I made this up one day when I couldn't find a recipe anywhere with these ingredients. So I kind of threw it together on a whim. Sugar can be adjusted for sweetness, and if the sauce gets a bit thicker than desired I suggest adding a little chicken broth as it's thickening. Serve immediately over rice.

Categories     main-dish

Time 55m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 14

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 pound sweet Italian turkey sausage
2 red bell peppers, sliced
2 yellow onions, sliced
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil leaves
4 garlic cloves, chopped
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup Marsala wine
1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
4 to 6 fresh Italian sandwich rolls, optional

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a heavy large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausages and cook until brown on both sides, about 7 to 10 minutes. Remove from the pan and drain.
  • Keeping the pan over medium heat, add the peppers, onions, salt, and pepper and cook until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Add the oregano, basil, and garlic and cook 2 more minutes.
  • Add the tomato paste and stir. Add the Marsala wine, tomatoes, and chili flakes, if using. Stir to combine, scraping the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon to release all the browned bits. Bring to a simmer.
  • Cut the sausages into 4 to 6 pieces each, about 1-inch cubes. Add the sausage back to the pan and stir to combine. Cook until the sauce has thickened, about 20 minutes.
  • Serve in bowls. Or, if serving as a sandwich, split the rolls in half lengthwise. Hollow out the bread from the bottom side of each roll, being careful not to puncture the crust. Fill the bottom half of the roll with sausage mixture. Top and serve sandwiches immediately.

ALOHA SAUSAGE AND PEPPERS

Aloha Sausage and Peppers image

This meal came about last night because I WAS planning to make stuffed chicken breasts but I had NO chicken! I did not want to run to the store so I just rummaged through the freezer and fridge and this was the result. I really wanted to take a picture but I could not keep my teenagers from eating it out of the pan while it was...

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 8

5 evergood pineapple sausages
2 red bell peppers
2 orange or yellow bell peppers
1 sweet onion, such as walla walla or vidalia
1 Tbsp olive oil
6 Tbsp red pepper jelly, i used trader joe's
2 Tbsp orange juice
salt and pepper, to taste, if desired.

Steps:

  • 1. This is really easy and quick because the Evergood sausages are already cooked. Here goes...
  • 2. Remove the seeds and veins from the peppers and cut into about 1 inch slices Peel and slice the onion into 1 inch slices. Heat oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Add the peppers and onions (I added a bit of salt and pepper here) Cook until almost tender-crisp.
  • 3. While veggies are cooking slice the sausages into 1 inch slices. I sliced them on the bias. Makes the pieces look nice and much larger. When veggies are crisp-tender add the sliced sausages to the pan. Continue to cook until sausages have browned a bit. Stir and flip as needed. This may sound long, but it was really only minutes!
  • 4. When the sausages have browned, plop in the pepper jelly and the orange juice. Turn heat to low and stir to combine as the jelly and juice create the sauce. That's it! Time to eat!

Making delicious and nutritious meals at home is an excellent way to feed your family and friends. If you're looking for a recipe that offers a blend of flavors and is easy to make, then try aloha sausage and peppers. This recipe combines the deliciousness of sausage with the sweetness of bell peppers and pineapple cored with the flavors of garlic and onion. However, there are a few tips to keep in mind when making this dish. Let's have a look at some of these tips.

Tip 1: Choose the right sausage

The first tip to consider when making aloha sausage and peppers is to choose the right sausage. To get the best result, select a high-quality sausage that has a firm texture and is not too fatty. Italian sausage or kielbasa sausage works well in this recipe. Be sure to remove any casings from the sausage before cooking.

Tip 2: Cut the vegetable in equal sizes

Cutting all the vegetables in equal sizes is crucial when making this recipe. By doing so, the vegetables will cook evenly, making sure each component is well cooked for the perfect texture and taste. Remember to cut the bell peppers into strips that are about the same size as your sausage. The onion should also be cut into similar sizes for even cooking.

Tip 3: Play with the spices

While this recipe already has an excellent blend of flavors, don't hesitate to experiment with spices. You can add fresh thyme or rosemary for an herbal kick or sprinkle in some red chili flakes for an extra spicy taste. Be careful not to overdo it, as it may affect the taste of the dish.

Tip 4: Marinate the pineapple

Marinating the pineapple is an optional step when making aloha sausage and peppers. Marinated pineapple adds a sweet and tangy flavor to the dish, making it even more delicious. If you choose to marinate your pineapple, consider soaking it in a combination of sugar and lime juice for an hour or two before cooking.

Tip 5: Cook the sausage first

Another tip to follow when making this recipe is to cook the sausage first. Sausages can take longer to cook thoroughly than vegetables. To avoid undercooking the sausage or overcooking the vegetables, cook the sausages in a separate skillet and then set aside. Once the vegetables are prepared, reheat the sausage before combining with the other ingredients.

Tip 6: Preheat the skillet

To get the best results from cooking the vegetables, make sure the skillet is heated before adding them in. Preheating the skillet allows the vegetables to cook quickly and evenly. The result is crispy peppers and onions with a delicious caramelized flavor.

Tip 7: Use low sodium chicken broth

To add some extra flavor and prevent the dish from drying out, consider using low sodium chicken broth. The broth will help bring all the flavors together while keeping everything moist. You can also use white wine instead of chicken broth for more flavor.

Tip 8: Serve with rice or pasta

Aloha sausage and peppers can be served on their own, but it's best enjoyed with a side dish. You can try pairing it with rice or your favorite pasta. The flavors of the aloha sausage and peppers will complement your preferred carb and give your meal the necessary balance.

Conclusion

There you have it, eight valuable tips to keep in mind when making aloha sausage and peppers. Remember to choose the right sausage, cut all the vegetables in equal sizes, experiment with spices, marinate the pineapple if you prefer, cook the sausage first, preheat the skillet, use low sodium chicken broth, and serve with rice or pasta. With these tips, you'll be able to make a delicious and nutritious meal that your family and friends will love.
