ALOHA CHICKEN BURGERS

Aloha Chicken Burgers image

This tasty sandwich is like a luau on a bun!

Provided by Chris McDaniel

Categories     Meat and Poultry Recipes     Chicken     Chicken Breast Recipes

Time 1h20m

Yield 2

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
¼ cup soy sauce
3 slices thick cut bacon
2 large hamburger buns, split
1 tablespoon softened butter
¼ cup teriyaki sauce
2 slices Swiss cheese
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 slices pineapple
2 slices tomato
2 slices of iceberg lettuce

Steps:

  • Place chicken breasts into a plastic zipper bag with soy sauce, seal the bag, and marinate in refrigerator for 30 minutes. While chicken is marinating, place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices on a paper towel-lined plate, and set aside. Spread cut sides of hamburger buns with butter.
  • Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat, and lightly oil the grate.
  • Remove the chicken from the soy sauce, and discard the excess soy sauce. Place the chicken breasts onto the preheated grill, and grill until chicken shows good grill marks, is no longer pink inside, and the juices run clear, 4 to 5 minutes per side. When chicken is almost done, brush each piece generously on both sides with teriyaki sauce to finish grilling. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each chicken breast, and cover with a lid to help the cheese melt onto the chicken.
  • While chicken is grilling, spread the buns open on the grill and cook until toasted and showing grill lines, about 2 minutes. Set the buns aside.
  • To assemble, spread the grilled sides of each bun with mayonnaise, and top each bottom bun with a cooked chicken breast, 1 1/2 slices of bacon, a slice of pineapple, a slice from a head of lettuce, a slice of tomato, and the top bun.

Categories     Pineapple

Time 50m

Yield 6 burgers, 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 26

1 lb 75% lean ground beef
12 ounces Spam, grated
6 tablespoons cold water
1/4 cup grated sweet yellow onion
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
fine sea salt
fresh ground white pepper
1/2 cup pineapple juice
3 tablespoons dry sake
3 tablespoons teriyaki sauce
2 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons ketchup
4 teaspoons cornstarch
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon sriracha sauce
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon minced onion flakes
6 slices havarti cheese
6 slices cooked crisp bacon (optional)
6 slices fresh pineapple, cored, trimmed, and sliced 1/2-inch thick
6 slices sweet red onions, sliced 1/4-inch thick
6 leaves fresh green leaf lettuce
1 (4 ounce) can diced green chilies, drained
6 king's original sweet hawaiian rolls
salted butter (lightly spread over bun halves)

Steps:

  • NOTES: IF YOU CANNOT FIND DRY SAKE, SUBSTITUTE IT WITH DRY SHERRY. YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE FRESH GARLIC AND GINGER WITH 1/8 TEASPOON EACH GARLIC POWDER AND GROUND GINGER. FOR A MILDER SAUCE, REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF SRIRACHA. DICED ROASTED RED PEPPER MAY BE USED IN PLACE OF DICED ROASTED GREEN CHILES. HAVARTI CHEESE MAY BE REPLACED WITH MONTEREY JACK OR PEPPER JACK CHEESE. USE ONLY KING'S HAWAIIAN BRAND ORIGINAL SWEET HAMBURGER BUNS.
  • PREPARE MEAT: Place 1 lb ground beef into a medium mixing bowl. Grate one loaf of SPAM over the ground beef. Mix 6 tablespoons cold water with 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch then pour over mixture. Grate 1/4 cup sweet onions into bowl. Wearing kitchen gloves, combine the meat mixture, squeezing it through the fingers until well combined.
  • PREPARE PATTIES: Shape meat mixture into 6 equal patties, about 1-inch larger in width than King's Hawaiian Hamburger Buns. Place patties on a platter. Sprinkle each patty on each side with fine sea salt and freshly ground white pepper. Refrigerate patties until ready to grill.
  • PREPARE SAUCE: Whisk all of the sauce ingredients in a small mixing bowl. Transfer sauce mixture into a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly until completely thickened. Reduce heat to lowest setting and cover, stirring occasionally to refresh consistency.
  • PREPARE BUNS: Lightly and evenly butter each separated flat surface of King's Original Hawaiian Sweet Hamburger Buns. Attach buttered cut sides together and return to the original bag until needed, to keep fresh.
  • PREPARE FIXINGS: Cook the bacon if using, until crisp (2 slices per burger). Slice the vegetables and pineapple to specifications. Immerse the onion slices in the sauce. Cover and let heat. Turn once. Remove when onions have softened slightly.
  • PREPARE GRILL: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Arrange patties on one side of the grill. Place pineapple slices on the other side of the grill. Turn each when dark grill-marks appear. Remove patties and pineapple when done to your satisfaction.
  • TOAST BUNS: Place buttered buns sliced-side down on grill, just until medium-toasted.
  • ASSEMBLE BURGERS: Turn the grilled pineapple rings in the heated sauce, until well-coated, then remove. Spoon or brush the prepared sauce evenly across each cut top bun portion. Turn the grilled patties in the sauce pan to coat. Place the cheese slices over patties. Cover saucepan until cheese is melted. Transfer patties onto the bottom bun halves. Stir the drained green chiles well into the sauce mixture. Continue assembling burgers with the bacon (optional), then pineapple, sliced onion, and lettuce. Spoon the sauce over the grilled side of each top bun. Place top buns over each assembled burger.
  • SERVE IMMEDIATELY with Hawaiian potato chips, Maui onion rings or fries, and enjoy!

The term "aloha" is often associated with Hawaiian culture and represents the spirit of love, peace, and goodwill. Aloha burgers embody this spirit by bringing together a variety of flavors and ingredients to create a delicious and satisfying meal.

Key Ingredients

So what exactly makes an Aloha burger? There are several key ingredients that are often found in these burgers, including:
1. Pineapple
One of the defining features of an Aloha burger is the addition of pineapple. This tropical fruit is typically grilled or caramelized and added to the burger to create a sweet and tangy flavor. Pineapple also adds a juicy texture to the burger and pairs well with other tropical flavors like teriyaki sauce and coconut.
2. Teriyaki Sauce
Teriyaki sauce is a sweet and savory sauce that originates from Japan. It is commonly used in Hawaiian cuisine and adds a distinctive flavor to Aloha burgers. This sauce is made from soy sauce, mirin, sugar, and other ingredients and can be used as a marinade or sauce for grilling the burger. It pairs well with pineapple and other tropical flavors.

Coconut is another common ingredient in Aloha burgers. It can be added to the burger in several ways, including shredded coconut or coconut milk. This ingredient adds a creamy texture and sweet flavor to the burger.

5. Cheese
Cheese is a staple ingredient in most burgers and can be used in Aloha burgers as well. The type of cheese used can vary, but cheddar or Swiss cheese are popular choices. The cheese adds a creamy and salty flavor to the burger and helps hold the toppings together.

Preparation and Cooking

To make an Aloha burger, you will need to start with a basic burger patty. This can be made from ground beef, chicken, turkey, or a vegetarian alternative like black beans or tofu. Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical climate, and cultural diversity. Aloha Burgers are a popular dish that combines the flavors of the islands with the classic American burger. The dish is inspired by Hawaii's unique blend of Asian, Polynesian, and Western influences. Aloha Burgers are easy to prepare and offer a delicious and unique twist to the traditional burger. If you want to make a great Aloha Burger at home, there are some important tips that you need to keep in mind. In this article, we will discuss valuable tips on how to make Aloha Burgers recipes.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Meat

The key to making a great burger is selecting the right meat. For Aloha Burgers, you want to use a lean ground beef or turkey that has at least 20% fat content. The fat content ensures that the burgers stay moist and flavorful while cooking. If you want a healthier option, lean ground turkey is a good alternative to ground beef.

Tip 2: Add Some Flavor to the Meat

To make your Aloha Burgers more flavorful, you can add some seasonings to the meat. Hawaiian sea salt, garlic powder, and ginger powder are some popular choices that add some island flavor to your burgers. You can also add some chopped onions, green onions, or cilantro to the meat for a more complex and flavorful taste.

Tip 3: Select the Right Toppings

Aloha Burgers are versatile and can be topped with a variety of ingredients. Traditional toppings include pineapple, teriyaki sauce, lettuce, tomato, and cheese. You can also add avocado, bacon, jalapenos, or sautéed mushrooms for an extra kick of flavor. Make sure you select toppings that complement the flavors of the burger and create a balanced taste.

Tip 4: Grill the Burgers Properly

Grilling is the best method for cooking Aloha Burgers. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat and make sure the grates are well-oiled to prevent sticking. Grill the burgers for 5-6 minutes on each side until they are fully cooked. Do not overcook the burgers as this can cause them to become dry and lose their flavor.

Tip 5: Toast the Buns

Toasting the buns adds an extra layer of texture and flavor to your Aloha Burgers. Place the buns on the grill for 1-2 minutes until they are lightly toasted. This will help to prevent the buns from becoming soggy and maintain the burger's structural integrity.

Tip 6: Serve with Some Side Dishes

Aloha Burgers are a complete meal but to make them more satisfying, you can serve them with some side dishes. Sweet potato fries, grilled veggies, and coleslaw are some popular choices that pair well with this dish. You can also serve some tropical drinks like Mai Tais or Pina Coladas to complete the island experience.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Aloha Burgers are a delicious and unique twist to the traditional burger. By following these valuable tips, you can make a great Aloha Burger at home that is full of island flavor and bursting with taste. Take a trip to Hawaii without leaving the comfort of your own home by preparing this delicious and easy-to-make burger.
