The perfect copycat Olive Garden Breadsticks! Perfect with any salad and pasta!

Provided by Camille Beckstrand

Categories     Side Dish

Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1⅓ cups water
1½ Tablespoons butter (softened)
4 cups flour
2 Tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons instant yeast ((one packet))
2 Tablespoons butter (melted)
Garlic Salt (for topping)

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl of a dough mixer, mix together water, softened butter, flour, sugar, salt, and yeast and make smooth soft dough.
  • (If you don't have a dough mixer, simply mix ingredients together in a bowl using a large spoon. When dough becomes too hard to mix using that, pull out of bowl and knead on a floured surface until dough is smooth. I kneaded mine for about 5 minutes and it turned out fine)
  • When dough is ready make elongated shape of bread sticks measuring 1 1/2 inch thickness and 5-6 inches long.
  • Place these sticks on a greased baking sheet by keeping 2-4 cm distance in between sticks.
  • Cover the pan and let them rise to double in size for 60-80 min (keep in a warm place for faster rising).
  • After they have risen, preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Brush breadsticks with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic salt. Bake for 18-20 minutes until they are lightly golden on top (don't over bake).

Breadsticks are a classic accompaniment to any Italian meal, and the ones served at Olive Garden are one of the most popular ones around. If you're a breadstick fanatic, you've probably tried to recreate them at home at least once, but something was always missing. Fret not! Here are some valuable tips for making the perfect Olive Garden copycat breadsticks, almost as good as the real thing.

1. Use the right flour

The flour you use in your dough can make or break your breadsticks. The best flour for breadsticks is a high-protein flour like bread flour or all-purpose flour. These flours develop more gluten, which gives breadsticks their chewy texture. The protein content of all-purpose flour ranges from 10-13%, while bread flour is around 13-15%.

2. Knead the dough well

Kneading is essential for developing gluten in the dough, which in turn gives the breadsticks their texture. A good rule of thumb is to knead the dough for at least 10 minutes for best results. If you're feeling lazy, you can always use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment to do the heavy lifting for you.

3. Let the dough rise properly

After kneading the dough, it needs time to rise properly. This allows the yeast to ferment, which in turn creates the air pockets that give breadsticks their fluffy texture. Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place for at least an hour. You can also let it rise in the fridge overnight for even more flavor.

4. Brush the breadsticks with butter and garlic

The secret to making Olive Garden copycat breadsticks is in the butter and garlic topping. Melt some butter and mix in garlic powder, salt, and parsley. Brush the mixture onto the breadsticks before and after baking for maximum flavor.

5. Use a baking stone or pizza stone

A baking stone or pizza stone is a must for making crispy, golden breadsticks. These stones absorb moisture from the dough, which helps create a crispy crust. Preheat the stone in the oven for at least 30 minutes before baking the breadsticks on it.

6. Don't overbake the breadsticks

While it's tempting to keep the breadsticks in the oven for a few more minutes to achieve that perfect golden color, don't overdo it. Overbaking the breadsticks will make them dry and tough. Bake them for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

7. Serve them hot

There's nothing like warm, fresh breadsticks straight out of the oven. Serve them hot and fresh with your favorite dipping sauce or marinara sauce for maximum enjoyment.
Conclusion
With these tips, you'll be on your way to making almost famous Olive Garden copycat breadsticks that are sure to impress. Remember to use high-protein flour, knead the dough well, let it rise properly, brush the breadsticks with butter and garlic, use a baking stone, don't overbake them, and serve them hot. Happy baking!
