PORK CHOPS WITH APPLES AND ONIONS

Pork Chops with Apples and Onions image

Sauteed apples and onion combine with pork chops for a tastiness that never disappoints.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Ingredients     Meat & Poultry     Pork Recipes

Number Of Ingredients 7

6 bone-in pork chops (loin or shoulder), cut 3/4 inch thick
Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil or vegetable oil
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large white onion, sliced
2 to 3 apples, cored and sliced (about 3 cups)
1 cup beer, white wine, cider, or chicken broth

Steps:

  • Trim the chops of excess fat. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat a 14-inch cast-iron skillet (if you have a smaller one, you'll need to work in batches) over high heat, and then swirl in the olive oil. Lay in the pork chops and don't move them for a few minutes, to assure a good golden sear forms. Turn and brown well on the second side for a total of about 10 minutes. Transfer the chops to a warm plate.
  • Swirl the butter into the pan. Add the onion and apples. Saute until the onion slices are lightly caramelized and the apples have begun to soften, about 8 minutes. Stir in the beer or other liquid. Return chops to the pan.
  • Cook until the pork is tender, about 15 more minutes (depending on the size of the chops), turning halfway through and covering the chops with the apple mixture. If the apple mixture needs a little thickening, transfer the chops to the warm plate again and simmer the mixture on high for a few minutes to reduce. Serve the chops over rice or mashed potatoes with a large spoonful of the apple-onion mixture over the top.

Tips to consider when making All In One Pork Chop Bake Recipes

All-In-One Pork Chop Bakes are simple, easy, and delicious meals that are perfect for a quick family dinner or a neighborhood potluck. The recipe calls for a quick preparation of vegetables, potatoes, and pork chops in one dish, which makes for easy clean up and serving. Here are some tips to ensure your pork chop bakes come out a success.
Choosing the Right Pork Chops
One of the crucial elements in making an all-in-one pork chop bake recipe is selecting the right type of pork chop. Pork chops come in different sizes, thickness, and cuts. It’s essential to pick a cut of meat that will work well in the recipe and provide the right texture and flavor. Generally, bone-in pork chops are the best choice for this recipe. Bone-in chops have more flavor and retain juiciness when cooking. They are also much harder to overcook, resulting in a meal of dried-out meat.
Marinate Your Pork Chops
Marinating your pork chops before baking is always a great idea, and it helps to impart some excellent flavors right into the meat. It’s not necessary, but it will enhance your dish’s overall taste. There are endless marinade recipes available to choose from, but the basics are the same. The marinade should contain an acidic element, such as vinegar or citrus juice, along with some spices and aromatics, such as garlic and herbs.
Season the Vegetables and Potatoes
Vegetables and potatoes are a staple in this recipe. However, they are often an afterthought, and people overlook seasoning them adequately, leading to a bland and drab dish. Before baking, cut your vegetables and potatoes into similar-sized pieces, coat them in oil, salt, and pepper, and toss them until they are coated evenly. It’s also great to add some herbs, garlic, or spices to the mix and give them a little kick of flavor.
Cooking Time and Temperature
Baking the all-in-one pork chop recipe at the correct temperature and for the right amount of time is the key to success. Cooking the pork chops to the desired internal temperature ensures that your meat is cooked through and juicy. To avoid undercooking or overcooking your pork chops, invest in a digital meat thermometer. Insert it at the thickest part of your pork chop, without touching the bone, and wait for it to read the optimal internal temperature of 145°F (63°C). You can bake the pork chops at 375°F (190°C) for around 25-30 minutes, but bear in mind that the intensity and duration of baking will depend on the thickness of your pork chops.
The Importance of Resting
It is vital to allow your pork chops to rest for about five minutes after baking. Doing this ensures that the juices distribute fully throughout the meat, giving you a tender and juicy bite. If you cut into your pork chops right away, the juices will run out, which results in dry meat. So, be patient and let those chops rest!
Additions and Variations
This all-in-one pork chop bake recipe is a great foundation to work from, but there are numerous ways to tailor it to your liking. You can swap out vegetables and potatoes for your favorites, such as sweet potatoes, parsnips, or turnips. Additionally, you can customize the recipe with the flavors you love, such as honey and mustard or garlic and rosemary. You can also change the cooking method as a variation for the recipe. Instead of baking, opt for grilling, pan-frying, or even slow cooking. These methods will change the dish's profile and require some recipe adjustment, but that is part of the fun of cooking and trying new things.
In Conclusion
All-in-one pork chop bakes are a classic meal with limitless possibilities. Utilize this hack for an easy dinner or a quick way to feed a crowd, and you will not regret it. Follow these tips and tricks to ensure that your pork chop bakes come out delicious, tender, and juicy.
