Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 lb pork chops (approx. 4 chops), divided
1 14.5 oz can shredded sauerkraut
4 pinches salt, more to taste if needed
4 pinches black pepper, more to taste if needed
2 tsp olive oil, divided
2 oz water

Steps:

  • 1. In a large skillet over medium high heat, add ½ of the olive oil and let oil warm for about a minute. 2. Add half of the pork chops to the pan and season with a pinch of salt and a pinch of black pepper. Sear the chops for 2-3 minutes or until chops are golden brown on the bottom. 3. Turn pork chops over, season with a pinch of salt and a pinch of pepper and continue to cook another 2-3 minutes. 4. Remove pork chops and set aside on a plate. Repeat process with the remaining pork chops using the remainder of the olive oil, salt, and pepper. 5. Remove the second set of pork chops from the pan and place on the plate with the first set of pork chops. 6. Reduce heat to medium low and add can of sauerkraut to the pan; stir sauerkraut to get the fond from the chops off of the bottom of the pan (this will turn your sauerkraut a medium brown color). 7. Place the pork chops on top of the sauerkraut (including any juices collected on the plate from the chops). 8. Pour the water over the pork chops and then cover pan and cook an additional 30 minutes or until pork chops are fork tender.

Pork Chops

Tip #2: Properly Prepare the Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut is a fermented cabbage dish that is commonly used in many pork recipes. It is tangy, flavorful and contains many nutrients. Proper preparation of sauerkraut can make a significant difference in the final result of the dish. Here are some tips to consider when preparing sauerkraut for your pork recipe.
Rinse the Sauerkraut
Before cooking, it is essential to rinse the sauerkraut. Rinse the sauerkraut with cold water to remove any excess salt and improve the taste of the dish.
Squeeze Out Excess Water
After rinsing the sauerkraut, it is essential to squeeze out any excess water. Excess water can dilute the tangy flavor of the sauerkraut and may lead to a mushy consistency in the final dish.
Season the Sauerkraut
Sauerkraut can sometimes be bland, especially if it is not properly seasoned. To enhance the flavor of the sauerkraut, add some onions, apples, and caraway seeds. These ingredients will provide depth and complexity to the dish.

Tip #3: Use the Right Seasoning

Proper seasoning can make a significant difference in the final taste of your pork and sauerkraut recipe. Here are some seasoning options to consider when making your dish.
Garlic and Onion
Garlic and onion are staples in most savory dishes. Adding these ingredients to your pork and sauerkraut recipes can provide a delicious depth of flavor.
Herbs and Spices
Herbs and spices are a great way to add flavor to your pork and sauerkraut recipes. Caraway seeds, thyme, and bay leaves are excellent options to consider. These herbs and spices complement the flavors of the pork and sauerkraut while providing a unique taste to the dish.
White Wine
White wine is an excellent ingredient for pork and sauerkraut. Adding a splash of white wine to the dish can provide acidity and balance out the sweetness of the sauerkraut.

Tip #4: Properly Cook the Pork and Sauerkraut

Proper cooking of the pork and sauerkraut is essential to creating a delicious dish. Here are some cooking tips to consider when making your pork and sauerkraut recipe.
Brown the Pork
Before cooking the pork with the sauerkraut, it is essential to brown it. Browning the pork will add depth and enhance the flavor of the meat. It also helps to lock in the juices and makes the pork more tender.
Simmer Slowly
Simmering the pork and sauerkraut slowly is key to achieving a tender and juicy dish. This recipe requires a slow-cooking method on low heat, which allows the flavors to meld and the pork to become fork-tender.
Cover the Pork
Covering the pork while it cooks will help to keep it moist and tender. This also helps to lock in the flavors and prevents excess evaporation of the liquid in the dish.

Conclusion

To create a mouth-watering pork and sauerkraut recipe, it is essential to choose the right cut of pork, properly prepare the sauerkraut, use the right seasoning, and cook it slowly.
