AIR-FRYER MOZZARELLA STICKS

Air-Fryer Mozzarella Sticks image

Deep-fried mozzarella sticks are one of our favorite appetizers. I figured out how to make them at home without having to haul out the deep fryer. Make sure to double-bread each one so these air-fryer mozzarella sticks get nice and crunchy, and to keep the cheese from oozing out as they get warm. -Mary Merchant, Barre, Vermont

AIR FRYER RANCH MOZZARELLA STICKS

Air Fryer Ranch Mozzarella Sticks image

Sure, you could just heat up frozen mozzarella sticks. But DIYing with your air fryer is so darn easy and allows you to make them ranch flavored. Pro tip: make a double batch and stash them in your freezer in a resealable freezer bag so they're waiting for you when you need them most.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Time 2h25m

Yield 24 mozzarella sticks

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 cup breadcrumbs
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
One 1-ounce package ranch dressing mix
2 large eggs
One 12-ounce bag mozzarella string cheese
Nonstick cooking spray, for coating
Chopped fresh parsley and marinara sauce, for serving

Steps:

  • Add the breadcrumbs to a large skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring often, until golden brown, about 4 minutes.
  • Transfer the breadcrumbs to a medium shallow bowl and stir in the black pepper and half of the ranch dressing mix (reserve the remaining mix for another purpose). Crack the eggs into another medium shallow bowl and whisk to combine. Cut each cheese stick in half crosswise.
  • Dip a cheese stick in the eggs to coat completely, allowing the excess to drip back into the bowl. Coat the cheese stick in the breadcrumb mixture, patting to adhere and cover completely. Dip the cheese stick back in the eggs and then back in the breadcrumb mixture a second time. Transfer to a baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining cheese sticks, eggs and breadcrumbs.
  • Freeze the mozzarella sticks until frozen solid, at least 2 hours and up to 4 months in the freezer in a resealable freezer bag.
  • To cook, preheat a 3.5-quart air fryer to 390 degrees F. Lightly coat each mozzarella stick with nonstick spray.
  • Working in batches, fill the air fryer basket with mozzarella sticks, making sure there's space between each so they're not touching. Cook, flipping once, until the mozzarella sticks are just beginning to ooze cheese out of the ends, 3 to 4 minutes total. Gently remove them to a serving plate and top with parsley. Serve with marinara sauce.

BEST EVER KETO AIR FRYER MOZZARELLA STICKS

The only thing better than cheese is FRIED cheese ????

Provided by @MakeItYours

Number Of Ingredients 7

6 mozzarella string cheese sticks (MUST be low moisture, part skim)
1-2 large eggs, beaten
1/2 cup finely grated parmesan cheese
1/3 cup almond flour
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Steps:

  • If needed, prep your air fryer basket insert with a tin foil liner. (This typically applies to mesh style liners. Detailed instructions are available in this post.)
  • Unwrap the cheese sticks and cut in half to create two shorter sticks from each. Set aside.
  • Beat your egg/eggs in a small to medium bowl. You can start with one egg and add another later if needed.
  • In a medium dish (large enough to make it easy to coat your cheese sticks) blend together the parmesan cheese, almond flour, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and sea salt.
  • Create a dipping station starting with your (previously cut) cheese sticks, followed by the egg wash, then the "breading" mix, and finally a small pan or dish covered with a sheet of parchment paper.
  • One by one, dip each cheese stick in the egg wash followed by rolling the cheese stick in the "breading" mix. I use a method to help adhere the "breading" to the cheese by rolling between my palms which helps to press and secure the almond flour/parmesan coating onto the cheese stick. Repeat these steps a second time before placing the fully coated cheese stick on the parchment paper. To summarize, be sure that each cheese stick gets two egg washes and two rolls in the almond flour/parmesan breading.
  • Once all the cheese sticks have been dipped and rolled, check each one to make sure that no cheese is showing through. Re-roll any that need extra "breading". If the cheese stick isn't fully coated, there is a greater risk that cheese will ooze out during cooking. You should have very little of the almond flour/parmesan mixture left by the time you are done with the coating process. Feel free to use it up by re-rolling any that look like they need a little extra lovin'.
  • Place the pan/dish with cheese sticks in the freezer on a level surface for no less than 1 hour. This helps to keep the cheese from melting too quickly in the high heat of the air fryer giving the outer coating time to get crispy.
  • Once frozen through, remove the cheese sticks from the freezer. With cooking spray, grease your air fryer basket and/or tin foil liner AS WELL AS each cheese stick. (I spray the top side then roll them over and spray the other side.)
  • Place cheese sticks in an air fryer. (If you have a smaller air fryer, you may want to separate into two batches as the mozzarella sticks puff a bit while cooking.) Cook at 375 degrees (or 380 if your Air Fryer doesn't have 5 degree increments) for 7-10 minutes depending on your air fryer. I set my Philips TurboStar to 375 degrees and cook them for about 8 minutes. After 5 minutes in the air fryer, I suggest checking them every minute or so moving forward. If you see the cheese start to ooze out, then it's time to pull them.
  • Serve immediately to ensure that your fried mozzarella sticks remain crispy, melty, and gooey. I like to accompany mine with no-sugar-added marinara and ranch dressing. Enjoy!

Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks Recipes Explained

If you're a fan of the gooey, cheesy goodness of mozzarella sticks, but want to indulge in a healthier version, then air fryer mozzarella sticks might just be the answer. Air fryer mozzarella sticks are an easy and delicious snack or appetizer that combines the delicious flavors of golden brown breadcrumbs and melted mozzarella cheese.
What is an Air Fryer?
An air fryer may sound like a complicated kitchen gadget, but it's actually quite simple. It's a kitchen appliance that uses hot air to fry food, similar to a convection oven. The difference is that air fryers are much smaller, and the air circulates around the food, making it crispy and golden brown. Air fryers also eliminate the need for oil, which makes them a healthy alternative to deep-fried foods.
What are Mozzarella Sticks?
Mozzarella sticks are a popular appetizer made from mozzarella cheese that has been coated in breadcrumbs and fried until crispy. They're often served with a side of marinara sauce and are a crowd-pleaser. Traditional mozzarella sticks are deep-fried, which can add a lot of calories and fat to this tasty snack.
How to Make Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks
Making air fryer mozzarella sticks is an easy process that requires just a few ingredients. First, start by cutting your mozzarella cheese into sticks that are approximately 1/2 inch in diameter and 2-3 inches in length. Then, prepare two bowls—one with beaten eggs and one with a mixture of breadcrumbs, flour, and spices like garlic powder and Italian seasoning. Dip the cheese sticks into the beaten eggs, then coat them in the breadcrumb mixture. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F and line the basket with parchment paper. Place the coated cheese sticks in the basket, making sure they're not touching each other. Cook for five to six minutes, until the mozzarella sticks are golden brown and crispy. Serve hot with marinara sauce on the side.
Variations of Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks
There are many ways to customize air fryer mozzarella sticks to suit your taste preferences. Some ideas include using different types of cheese, like cheddar or pepper jack, or adding ingredients like bacon bits or jalapeños for a spicy kick. You can also use different types of breadcrumbs, like panko or seasoned breadcrumbs, to add more flavor. Another customization option is to experiment with different dipping sauces. While marinara sauce is a classic pairing, there are many other options, like ranch dressing or honey mustard. You can even make your own dipping sauces by mixing mayo, mustard, or ketchup with different spices and seasonings.
The Benefits of Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks
Air fryer mozzarella sticks offer several benefits over traditional deep-fried versions. First and foremost, air fryer mozzarella sticks are much healthier because they're not deep-fried in oil. Mozzarella sticks are one of the most popular snacks in America, and they're even better when they're made in an air fryer. Air fryer mozzarella sticks are crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, making them the perfect treat for any occasion. However, making the perfect air fryer mozzarella sticks can be a challenge, especially if you're new to using an air fryer. Below are some valuable tips to ensure that your air fryer mozzarella sticks turn out perfectly every time.

Tip 1: Use High Quality Mozzarella Cheese

The quality of your mozzarella cheese can make or break your air fryer mozzarella sticks. It's essential to choose a high-quality mozzarella cheese that’s low in moisture. Low-moisture mozzarella cheese doesn't melt as quickly as regular mozzarella cheese, which is important to ensure that the cheese doesn't leak out of the stick during cooking. A low-moisture cheese will also result in a crispier coating because there will be less moisture to evaporate during cooking.

Tip 2: Freeze Your Cheese Beforehand

Freezing the cheese before you begin coating helps prevent leakage or oozing of cheese during the frying process. Freezing the cheese makes it more solid, allowing it to withstand the heat of the air fryer. It also ensures that the cheese doesn't melt before the coating has time to cook and become crispy. Consider freezing the cheese sticks for a minimum of 20 minutes before breading and frying them.

Tip 3: Bread Your Cheese Sticks Carefully

Breading your cheese sticks is an essential step in making delicious air fryer mozzarella sticks. You'll need to coat them with a breadcrumb mixture, which should complement the cheese's flavor. You can use any breadcrumbs, like seasoned breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs, to coat the cheese. It's essential to ensure that the cheese sticks are coated evenly and thoroughly, or they may break apart or not maintain their shape while cooking.

Tip 4: Spray your Mozzarella Sticks with Oil

Before you place the mozzarella sticks in the air fryer, it’s important to lightly spray them with oil. This is important because it helps the breadcrumbs become crispy without getting burned. It also ensures that the cheese sticks don't stick to the air fryer basket, which can cause the coating to come off. You can use cooking spray or an oil dispenser with a brush to lightly coat each stick.

Tip 5: Preheat Your Air Fryer

Preheating your air fryer is an essential step in making sure your mozzarella sticks cook evenly and become crispy. Preheating allows the air fryer's temperature to reach the ideal temperature before cooking, which ensures that the sticks cook evenly. You should let the air fryer preheat for at least 5 minutes before placing the mozzarella sticks into the basket.

Tip 6: Don't Overcrowd the Air Fryer Basket

It's essential not to overload the air fryer basket with too many cheese sticks because overcrowding can cause your sticks not to cook evenly. When you overcrowd the basket, the air may not circulate around the cheese sticks properly, making them cook unevenly. Overcrowding can also cause the cheese to ooze out or the breading to fall off the cheese sticks.

Tip 7: Avoid Mistakes During Cooking

Cooking time, temperature, and method also contribute to the ultimate taste and texture of the mozzarella sticks. It's essential to observe the stick while cooking, making adjustments if necessary if they require more or less time to cook. For example, if you notice that the sticks are becoming too brown too quickly, lower the temperature, or adjust the cooking time slightly.

Conclusion

Air fryer mozzarella sticks are a great snack, and they're easy to make at home. By following these valuable tips, you'll be well on your way to making the perfect air fryer mozzarella sticks. Remember to choose high-quality mozzarella cheese, freeze it before breading, bread it carefully, spray with oil, and preheat your air fryer. You should also avoid overcrowding the basket and avoid mistakes during cooking. With these tips in mind, you’ll enjoy an excellent snack that’s crisp on the outside and oozy on the inside.
