AIR FRYER LATKES

Air Fryer Latkes image

Potato latkes are usually fried, on top of the stove, but the air fryers on the market right now are a great way to prepare this popular dish. This method yields a crispy latke that can be an appetizer or a dinner side. If you have an oil sprayer, you can use your oil of choice. I used purchased avocado oil spray, to give that beautiful brown color. Serve with sour cream or applesauce, if desired. Refrigerate any leftovers in an airtight container, up to 5 days.

The air fryer is a popular option for cooking latkes that are crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside. In this article, we’ll discuss air fryer latkes recipes and valuable tips for making them.

Why Choose Air Fryer Latkes?

Air fryers are an easy and healthier way to prepare latkes. They work by circulating hot air around the food at high speed, which cooks the food quickly and crisps the outside. Air fryers can make latkes that are crispy and delicious, while using less oil than traditional frying. This means that air fryer latkes are a good option for anyone who wants to enjoy this classic dish without all the extra calories that come with deep-frying.

Tips for Preparing Air Fryer Latkes:

1. Use starchy potatoes - Russet or Yukon gold potatoes are the best options for latkes. These potatoes have higher starch content than others, which is what makes them crispy when cooked. Avoid using waxy potatoes like Red Bliss or Fingerling as these will not crisp up in the air fryer. 2. Grate the potatoes manually - Using a food processor to grate the potatoes will give them a fine texture that will not hold together during cooking. Manually grating the potatoes will produce a rougher texture, which will help the latkes stay together while cooking. 3. Squeeze the grated potatoes - Once you have grated the potatoes, use a cheesecloth or clean kitchen towel to squeeze out the excess liquid. This will help the latkes crisp up in the air fryer, and prevent them from turning soggy. 4. Add seasoning to the potatoes - Don't be afraid to experiment with seasonings in your latkes. Besides salt and pepper, you can add chopped garlic, onion, or scallions to the potato mixture. 5. Cornstarch or flour - Adding a little cornstarch or flour to the potato mixture can help to bind the latkes together, preventing them from falling apart. Use one tbsp of cornstarch or flour for every three potatoes grated. 6. Use the right temperature - Air fryers vary in temperature settings, but for latkes, a temperature of 375°F is recommended. This will ensure that the latkes are cooked through and crispy on the outside. 7. Don’t overcrowd the air fryer - Overcrowding the air fryer basket can prevent hot air from circulating around the food, causing uneven cooking. Instead, cook the latkes in batches, leaving some space between each one. 8. Flip the latkes - Flip the latkes over halfway through cooking to ensure that they cook evenly on both sides. This will also help them to crisp up all over.

Conclusion:

Air fryer latkes are a delicious option for anyone who wants to enjoy this traditional dish without all the extra calories that come with deep-frying. By following these tips, you can create latkes that are crispy, tender, and full of flavor. Remember to use starchy potatoes, manually grate them, squeeze out excess liquid, and add your preferred seasonings. Don't forget to flip them over halfway through cooking and cook in batches without overcrowding the air fryer. We hope that with these valuable tips, you are now ready to make your own air fryer latkes with confidence!
