1 cup panko bread crumbs
1 1/4 tsp garlic powder
1 1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1 tsp ground cumin
3/4 tsp kosher salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
24 oz barramundi (4 filets)
1 large egg + 2 tablespoons water
16 flour tortillas (street taco sized)
sour cream and lime juice for serving
2 tbsp lime juice
2 tsp honey
1 small garlic clove, grated
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp chili powder
2 tbsp olive oil
5 cups shredded cabbage
1 jalapeno, diced
1 cup chopped pineapple
1/4 cup chopped cilantro
1/4 cup diced red onion

Steps:

  • Preheat are fryer for five minutes at 380 degrees.
  • Add the panko, garlic powder, chili powder, onion powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper to a shallow dish or bowl. Stir to combine.
  • Add egg and water to another shallow dish or bowl. Whisk to combine.
  • Pat fish dry with paper towels. Use a sharp knife to cut the fish into four 1x4 pieces. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • Dip each piece of fish into the egg. Let the excess drip off. Coat in the bread crumbs. Use your fingers to make sure the breadcrumbs are pressed into the fish. Repeat with remaining fish.
  • Add half of the fish to the air fryer. Spray the top generously with olive oil spray. Cook for 4 minutes. Pull the tray out and flip the fish over. Spray with olive oil spray. Cook another 2 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Wipe the bottom of the air fryer clean after each batch. It's super quick and easy and prevents the fish from burning later on. Repeat with remaining half of the fish.
  • While the fish cook. Add the lime juice, honey, garlic, salt, cumin, chili powder, and olive oil to a medium bowl. Whisk to combine. Add the cabbage, jalapeño, pineapple, cilantro, and red onion. Toss until coated in the dressing. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • Warm tortillas in the microwave. If desired, char the tortillas over an open flame.
  • Add a little bit of slaw to each tortilla. Top with a piece of fish. Cover with more slaw. Serve with sour cream and a squeeze of lime juice.

Fish tacos are a delicious main dish that many people enjoy. Making them in an air fryer is a convenient and healthier option than deep frying. However, achieving that crispy outside while keeping the inside moist can be tricky. Here are some tips to help you make the perfect air fryer crispy fish tacos with slaw recipe.

Selecting the Right Fish

When selecting the fish to use in your tacos, it's best to choose a firm whitefish like cod, halibut, or tilapia. They hold up well in the air fryer and cook evenly. Avoid using delicate fish like trout or salmon as they tend to fall apart during cooking.

Cut the Fish into 1-inch strips

To ensure that the fish cooks evenly and gets crispy all around, cut it into uniform strips. Use a sharp knife to cut the fish into one-inch strips.

Seasoning the Fish

Seasoning the fish is essential in making delicious fish tacos. You can use a simple seasoning blend of salt, pepper, and paprika. Or you can experiment with different seasonings like cumin, chili powder, or garlic powder. Be sure to coat the fish evenly with the seasoning blend.

Breading the Fish

The key to achieving a crispy outside is to bread the fish well. You can use Panko breadcrumbs or cornmeal to bread the fish. Dip each fish strip in beaten eggs, then coat it in the breadcrumbs or cornmeal. Be sure to press firmly so that the breading sticks to the fish.

Preheat the Air Fryer

It's crucial to preheat the air fryer to ensure that the fish cooks evenly and crisps up nicely. Set the air fryer to 400°F and let it preheat for five minutes.

Lightly Oil the Fish

Spraying the fish lightly with cooking oil before cooking helps to promote even browning and crisping. You can use olive oil or any neutral oil like vegetable oil or canola oil.

Cook the Fish in Batches

Cooking the fish in batches helps to prevent overcrowding in the air fryer. Arrange the fish strips in a single layer and make sure they don't touch each other. Cook each batch for 8-10 minutes or until they're golden brown and crispy.

Make the Slaw

While the fish is cooking, you can make the slaw. Combine shredded cabbage, carrots, and sliced jalapenos in a bowl. Add some lime juice and salt, and toss to combine. You can also add some chopped cilantro, diced tomatoes, or sliced avocado to the slaw.

Assembly

Once the fish is cooked, it's time to assemble your tacos. Warm up some tortillas, and add a few pieces of crispy fish to each tortilla. Top the fish with a generous spoonful of slaw and any additional toppings you like. Some people like to add a dollop of sour cream or a sprinkle of shredded cheese to their tacos.

Clean up the Air Fryer

After you've finished cooking, it's essential to clean up the air fryer properly. Remove the basket and let it cool before washing it with warm, soapy water. Use a soft sponge or brush to scrub away any debris or stuck-on food. Rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before storing.

Conclusion

Making air fryer crispy fish tacos with slaw is easy once you know the tips and tricks. Be sure to use firm whitefish, cut it into uniform strips, season it well, and bread it thoroughly. Preheat the air fryer, lightly oil the fish, and cook it in batches. Lastly, make the slaw and assemble your tacos. Keep your air fryer clean for the next time you make this delicious meal.
