Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 11

¾ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup cornstarch
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 large onion, cut into rings
1 cup milk
1 egg
1 cup bread crumbs
cooking spray
2 pinches garlic powder
2 pinches paprika

Steps:

  • Whisk milk and egg into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat. Place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping.
  • Place bread crumbs in a shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs and scoop the crumbs over the rings to coat evenly. Give rings a hard tap as you remove them from the crumbs; the coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.

AIR FRYER ONION RINGS WITH ONION DIP

Air Fryer Onion Rings with Onion Dip image

Onions are probably one of my favorite pantry ingredients: they're inexpensive, full of flavor and have a long shelf life. However, they don't always get to be the star of the show-until now! The air fryer is a great tool for making a gluten-free version of traditional onion rings, here accompanied by an onion dip made with, yes, raw onions. Soaking the onions in buttermilk helps take away some of the bite!

Time 55m

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 18

1 large sweet onion, sliced into rings
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup gluten-free potato flakes
1/2 teaspoon ground chipotle
Kosher salt
1 large egg
1 cup gluten-free panko
2 teaspoons dried chives, optional
Nonstick cooking spray
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1/3 cup buttermilk
1 cup sour cream
1/4 cup scallions, white and green parts, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
1/2 to 1 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper or black pepper, or to taste
1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest
Pinch dried chives

Steps:

  • For the onion rings: Separate the onion rings, place in a shallow dish with the buttermilk and soak for 5 minutes.
  • Preheat an air fryer to 375 degrees F. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F.
  • Set out three shallow bowls for dredging. Whisk the potato flakes, ground chipotle and 1/2 teaspoon salt in one bowl. Whisk the egg, 2 tablespoons water and a little salt together in another bowl. Mix the panko, dried chives if using and 1/2 teaspoon salt together in the third bowl.
  • Spray the basket of the air fryer lightly with cooking spray. Drain the buttermilk from the onions; reserve 1/3 cup of the buttermilk for making the raw onion dip.
  • Dip each ring one at a time in the potato flake mixture, then in the egg mixture and finally in the panko mixture. Working in batches, put the onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Spray lightly with cooking spray. Cook until golden and crisp all over, about 10 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time. Transfer the cooked rings to a baking sheet and keep warm in the oven while cooking the remaining rings.
  • For the raw onion dip: Stir the red onion, the buttermilk reserved from the onion rings, the sour cream, scallions, garlic powder, salt, pepper and lemon zest together in a large bowl until completely combined. Let sit 5 to 10 minutes for the flavors to blend. Garnish with the dried chives. Serve immediately with the hot onion rings or refrigerate, covered, for up to 3 days.

Air fryer BBQ onion rings recipes are one of the delicious and crispy snacks that can be enjoyed by everyone. Whether you are hosting a party or just craving something savory, these crunchy and mouth-watering onion rings are a perfect snack to satisfy your hunger. With the use of an air fryer, you can make this snack in less time and with less oil, making it a healthier option for your diet. However, there are certain tips that you should keep in mind to ensure that your air fryer BBQ onion rings recipe comes out perfectly every time.

Tips for preparing the onions

1. Cut the onions in equal sizes
When preparing the onions for the recipe, it is important to cut them into equal sizes so that they cook evenly in the air fryer. You can use a mandolin or a sharp knife to slice the onions into thin and uniform rings. This will also help to make sure that the onions are crispy and not soggy.
2. Soak the onions in cold water
Soaking the onions in cold water for at least 30 minutes will help to remove any harshness and strong flavor that they might have. You can add a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to the water to help break down the enzymes that cause the odor and strong taste. Soaking them in cold water will also help to bring out the natural sweetness of the onions.
3. Pat them dry before coating
Once you have soaked the onions in water, it is important to pat them dry with paper towels before coating them. This will help to remove any excess moisture, which can make the coating soggy and prevent the onions from becoming crispy. Make sure to remove as much water as possible before coating the onions.

Tips for coating the onions

1. Use a dry mix before wet mix
When coating the onions for your air fryer BBQ recipe, it is best to start with a dry mix before adding a wet mix. This will help to ensure that the coating stays on the onions and doesn't fall off during the air frying process. You can use a combination of flour, cornmeal, and spices to make the dry mix. This will give the onions a crispy texture.
2. Dip in a wet mix
Once you have coated the onions in a dry mix, it is time to dip them in a wet mix. You can use an egg wash or buttermilk to make the wet mix. This will help to make the coating more flavorsome and will add to the crispy texture of the onions.
3. Double coat for extra crispiness
If you want to make your air fryer BBQ onion rings extra crispy and flavorful, you can double coat them after the wet mix. This will give the onions a thicker coating and make them more crunchy. You can use the same dry mix as before, or use a different one to add variety to the flavor.

Tips for cooking the onions in the air fryer

1. Preheat the air fryer
Before cooking the onions in the air fryer, it is essential to preheat it to avoid uneven cooking. Preheating the air fryer will also help to reduce the cooking time and make the onions crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It is advisable to preheat the air fryer for at least 5 minutes at a temperature of 375°F.
2. Flip the onions halfway through cooking
When cooking the onions in the air fryer, it is advisable to flip them halfway through the cooking time to ensure that they cook evenly on both sides. It is also a good idea to shake the basket to ensure that the onions don't stick together.
3. Don't overcrowd the basket
To make sure that the onions cook evenly and become crispy, it is important not to overcrowd the basket of the air fryer. Overcrowding the basket can cause the onions to cook unevenly, and some may end up being undercooked or soggy. It is best to cook the onions in small batches rather than trying to cook them all at once.

Tips for serving and garnishing the onion rings

1. Serve immediately
To enjoy the air fryer BBQ onion rings at their best, it is crucial to serve them immediately after cooking. This will help to ensure that the onions remain crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. You can serve them with your favorite dip or sauce.
2. Garnish with fresh herbs
To add some color and flavor to your air fryer BBQ onion rings, you can garnish them with fresh herbs such as parsley or cilantro. This will not only make them look attractive but will also make them more enjoyable to eat.
3. Add a touch of spice
If you like your onion rings spicy, you can add some chili flakes or cayenne pepper to the dry mix or sprinkle them over the finished onion rings. This will add some heat and flavor to the snack.

Conclusion

Air fryer BBQ onion rings are a perfect snack for any occasion. With the right ingredients and techniques, you can make this snack crispy, savory, and healthier. By following the tips outlined above, you can ensure that your air fryer BBQ onion rings recipe comes out perfectly every time.
