Time 35m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 6

olive oil cooking spray
1 ½ cups self-rising flour, plus more for kneading
1 cup plain Greek yogurt
½ cup prepared pizza sauce
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
½ cup pepperoni

Steps:

  • Mix flour and Greek yogurt together in a bowl; transfer to a work surface floured with self-rising flour. Knead dough, adding more flour as needed to keep dough from being too sticky, 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Preheat an air fryer to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) according to manufacturer's instructions. Spray the bottom of the basket with cooking spray.
  • Divide dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece on a lightly floured work surface into a flat circle, about 1/8-inch thick. Spread 2 tablespoons of the pizza sauce over the bottom half of each dough circle. Top each with 1/4 cup of the mozzarella cheese and a quarter of the pepperoni. Fold dough over filling to form half circles and crimp edges to seal. Coat well with cooking spray.
  • Transfer calzones to the air fryer basket (you might need to work in batches). Cook for 4 minutes, then flip the calzone over and cook until golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes more.

The air fryer craze has taken over the kitchen, and for good reason. It’s a healthier way to cook your favorite foods without sacrificing flavor. Among the many delicious dishes that can be air-fried, chicken calzone has become a popular choice. With a crispy, golden crust and oozing melted cheese, air-fried chicken calzone is a must-try recipe.

The Ingredients

Before jumping into the recipe, let's take a look at the ingredients you will need to make air-fried chicken calzone. The recipe typically calls for:
Chicken:
For maximum flavor, we recommend using boneless, skinless chicken breasts. You can also use chicken thighs if you prefer.
Vegetables:
You can use any vegetables you like, but popular choices include bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes.
Cheese:
Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese are the most commonly used cheeses for calzone.
Biscuit Dough:
Store-bought biscuit dough is recommended for ease and convenience.
Oil:
Even though it's an air fryer recipe, you will still need a small amount of oil. Olive oil or vegetable oil is recommended.
Seasonings:
To add flavor to your air-fried chicken calzone, you will need to use Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

The Process

Now that we have covered the ingredients let's talk about how to make air-fried chicken calzone.
Step 1: Prep the Chicken and Vegetables
Cut the chicken breasts into small bite-sized pieces, and season with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Next, cut the vegetables into small pieces and set aside.
Step 2: Cook the Chicken and Vegetables
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add oil. When the oil is hot, add the chicken and cook for four to five minutes, or until fully cooked. Remove chicken from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add the vegetables and cook for three to four minutes, or until tender.
Step 3: Prep the Biscuit Dough
On a floured surface, roll out the biscuit dough with a rolling pin, making sure to shape it into an oval shape.
Step 4: Add the Filling
With half of the oval of biscuit dough, layer the chicken, vegetables, and cheese. Leave some space around the edges to seal the calzone.
Step 5: Seal the Calzone
Fold the biscuit dough over the filling and press the edges together to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges.
Step 6: Air Fry the Calzone
Preheat the air fryer to 375°F. Brush the calzone with oil and place it in the air fryer basket. Cook for 10-12 minutes, or until the dough is golden and crispy.
Step 7: Serve and Enjoy
Let the calzone cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Conclusion

Air-fried chicken calzone is a healthier alternative to traditional fried calzones. It's also a quick and easy recipe to make, and the variations are endless. With the right ingredients and a trusty air fryer, you can create a satisfying meal that your entire family will enjoy.
Air frying is the latest kitchen technology that promises to revolutionize the way we cook our favorite foods. With an air fryer, you can enjoy the same crispy texture and mouth-watering flavor of deep-fried recipes without the added oil and calories. One of the most popular air fryer recipes is the chicken calzone that promises to be healthy and delicious at the same time.

Tips for Preparing Air Fried Chicken Calzone

1. Use Flattened Chicken Breast
The key to making the perfect air fried chicken calzone is to use flattened chicken breast. This ensures that the chicken is perfectly cooked on the inside while the exterior is crispy and golden. Instead of using chicken breasts from the supermarket, consider purchasing a whole chicken and flattening it using a meat mallet or rolling pin. This will allow you to get uniform thickness, which makes the chicken cook evenly in the air fryer.
2. Choose the Right Dough
The dough is another essential component of any calzone recipe. You can opt for ready-to-use pizza dough or make your own by following a simple recipe. The dough should have a medium thickness and be easy to work with, so it can hold the filling without ripping or tearing apart. Additionally, roll the dough out thinly and cut into circles in order to ensure that your air-fried calzones have that perfect crispy texture.
3. Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheating your air fryer is crucial in ensuring that your calzone cooks evenly and turns out super crispy. Preheating the air fryer also helps to cook the chicken calzone quickly, eliminating any chances of undercooking or overcooking. Preheat your air fryer for at least 3 minutes before you start cooking, to guarantee that the temperature is evenly distributed through the device.
4. Space Them Out
Air fryers work by circulating hot air around the cooking basket. For evenly cooked and crispy calzones, make sure there is enough space between each calzone while air frying. The dough should not touch each other, and the basket should have enough space to allow the hot air to circulate freely around them. This ensures that the calzones are cooked evenly and are crispy on all sides.
5. Brush the Dough with Egg Wash
To get that shiny golden exterior, brush the outside of the calzone dough with egg wash before air frying it. This not only enhances the color and appearance of the calzone, but also helps the cheese and stuffing to adhere to the dough. Mix an egg with a teaspoon of water or milk and brush it onto the surface of the dough before placing it in the air fryer.

Conclusion

Air frying has revolutionized cooking methods and enabled us to enjoy our favorite deep-fried recipes using a healthier cooking technique. Chicken calzones can be made even healthier and more delicious in an air fryer, providing a perfect meal for any occasion. To make your air-fried chicken calzone recipes stand out, ensure the dough is rolled out uniformly, use flattened chicken breasts, preheat the air fryer, brush the dough with egg wash, and give them enough space while air frying. Happy cooking!
