Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 cups long grain rice
1 stick Mexican Cinnamon
4 cups hot water
8 cups extra water to finish the drink
3/4 cup sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup milk (2% or whole)
Ice cubes to serve

Steps:

  • Place the rice and cinnamon stick in a large glass bowl and add the 4 cups of hot water. Cover the bowl with a dish or plastic wrap, then let it soak overnight, or at least 8 hours. *Please see NOTES
  • The next day, pour the rice, cinnamon, and water into your blender and process until it becomes a smooth, watery paste.
  • Using a strainer or sieve, strain the mixture into a wide mouth pitcher, stirring to help the liquid pass through.
  • Add the milk (if using), vanilla extract, and the rest of the water. Stir in the sugar, adjusting the amount to fit your taste. Let the drink chill in the refrigerator. Stir the Horchata before serving, since the rice mix tends to settle at the bottom. Serve in glasses with ice cubes.

AGUA DE ARROZ (MEXICAN RICE WATER)

Agua De Arroz (Mexican Rice Water) image

There is a small restaurant that I like to go to whenever I have the chance. Unfortunately, since it's about three hours away, I don't get to do so very often. One of the biggest draws for me is their Agua de Arroz, which means "Rice Water" in spanish. But to call it just simple rice water does it such a disservice. It is soooo much more than that! It is a sweet, creamy dessert drink that truly "makes" the meal. I tried it on a whim the first time. I had just walked away from the counter when I took a sip. I whirled around to my sister, who was right behind me, and said, "You have GOT to try this stuff!!!". So today I went searching for a recipe for Agua de Arroz...and found this. It haven't tried this specific recipe, but I will be soon! It sounds very much like the one that I had. NOTE: After trying this...it wasn't anything like the one I was looking for. It turned out to be this gooey, gelatinous...bleah. Since I can't delete the recipe, I thought I'd warn folks. Don't waste your ingredients.

Agua de arroz or Mexican rice water is a refreshing and delicious drink that is widely popular in Mexico and other parts of the world. This drink is made by boiling rice and cinnamon sticks in water and then processing it in a blender. Agua de arroz is a versatile beverage that can be enjoyed hot or cold and has numerous health benefits. In this article, we will provide valuable tips on how to make agua de arroz at home.

Tips to make Agua de arroz

1. Choose the right type of rice
The type of rice used to make agua de arroz is crucial in determining the flavor and texture of the beverage. Ideally, long-grain white rice or jasmine rice is used to make this beverage as they produce a smooth and creamy texture. Avoid using brown rice or wild rice as they tend to produce a grainy texture and might overpower the flavor of the cinnamon.
2. Rinse the rice prior to cooking
It is essential to rinse the rice thoroughly under running water to remove any impurities and starch. This helps to prevent the rice from sticking together when cooking and also helps to achieve a smooth texture of the beverage.
3. Soak the rice before cooking
Soaking the rice for about 30 minutes before cooking helps to soften the rice and aids in easier digestion. It also reduces the cooking time, resulting in a smoother consistency.
4. Boil rice with cinnamon sticks
To enhance the flavor of the agua de arroz, it is essential to add cinnamon sticks to the boiling water along with the rice. Cinnamon adds a unique taste and aroma to the beverage and offers numerous health benefits, including improving blood sugar control and reducing inflammation.
5. Blend the rice with water and sugar
After boiling the rice and cinnamon sticks, strain the mixture and transfer it to a blender. Add water and sugar to the blender and blend until smooth. The amount of sugar used depends on your preference and taste. Some people like their agua de arroz to be sweeter, while others prefer a mild sweetness.
6. Add milk or almond milk (optional)
If you prefer a creamier consistency, you can add milk or almond milk to the blended rice mixture. This will add a rich and creamy texture to the beverage and make it more satisfying.
7. Refrigerate before serving
It is recommended to refrigerate the agua de arroz for at least an hour before serving. This helps to chill the beverage and allows the flavors to blend and develop. You can serve the beverage cold or hot, depending on your preference.
8. Experiment with different flavors
Agua de arroz is a versatile beverage that can be customized to suit your taste preferences. You can experiment with different flavors by adding other ingredients such as vanilla extract, nutmeg, or lemon juice. These ingredients add a unique and refreshing flavor to the beverage and make it more exciting to drink.

Conclusion

Agua de arroz is a delicious and refreshing beverage that is popular in many parts of the world, especially in Mexico. By following the tips discussed above, you can make a smooth and flavorful agua de arroz at home. Remember to choose the right type of rice and rinse it thoroughly before cooking, soak the rice, boil it with cinnamon sticks, blend with water and sugar, refrigerate it, and experiment with different flavors to have a unique and delicious taste. Enjoy your homemade agua de arroz!
