These are hands-down the best scalloped potatoes you'll ever have. They even beat many of the 5-star restaurants I've tried like Mastro's. They are the perfect side dish for any evening or holiday feast and this recipe uses no heavy whipping cream. This actually makes them taste even better!

2 lbs Gold Potatoes (Sliced Thin)
1 tbs salted butter
1/2 cup onions (chopped fine)
4 cloves garlic (chopped fine)
1 cup 2% milk
.5 cups chicken broth
1/2 cup parmesan cheese (Asiago)
2 tbs flour
4 sprigs thyme
1.5 tsp salt
.5 tsp pepper
2 cups sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and lightly butter a square pyrex oven pan.

This is the way my mother always made her scalloped potatoes. The measurements are taken from other recipes because she always just winged it, but the method is the same. The key is to heat the milk first!

3 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced
½ onion, thinly sliced
9 tablespoons all-purpose flour, divided
6 tablespoons butter, diced and divided
salt and ground black pepper to taste
3 cups whole milk, or as needed

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Spread about 1/3 of the potato slices into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with about 1/3 of the onion slices. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons flour over the potato and onion. Arrange 2 tablespoons butter atop the flour. Season the entire layer with salt and pepper. Repeat layering twice more.
  • Heat milk in a saucepan until warm. Pour enough warm milk over the mixture in the baking dish so the top of the liquid is level with the final layer of potatoes.
  • Bake in preheated oven until potatoes are tender, 45 to 60 minutes.

1 teaspoon butter, softened
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1/3 cup whole milk
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 garlic cloves, crushed
6 medium potatoes
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • Grease a shallow 13x9-in. baking dish with the butter; set aside. In a small saucepan, combine the cream, milk, salt, pepper and garlic. Cook just until bubbles begin to form around sides of pan. Remove from the heat; cool for 10 minutes. , Peel and thinly slice the potatoes; pat dry with paper towels. 1 cup whipping cream
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

I was asked to bring a potato dish for Christmas and this is what I came up with. Everyone loved them and the dish was empty by the end of dinner...which I took as the ultimate compliment. As with all my creations I am usually inspired by other great chefs on this site. The inspiration for these came from "Twice Baked Potato Casserole #26043" by MizzNezz.

6 -8 medium potatoes, sliced thin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
1 (12 ounce) can fat-free evaporated milk
3 cups sour cream
1 lb bacon, cooked drained and crumbled (reserve grease)
2 cups pre-shredded cheddar cheese
2 cups pre-shredded mozzarella cheese
4 medium onions, sliced
2 green onions, chopped
3 tablespoons butter
1 pinch sugar

Steps:

  • Grease 13x9" casserole dish with reserved bacon grease.
  • In bowl wisk together the evaporated milk, sour cream, salt, pepper, horseradish, and garlic.
  • Slice onions and carmalize in pan with butter and pinch of sugar on Medium-low heat. This takes several minutes so be patient.
  • Layer half the potatoes in casserole dish followed by 1/2 the onions, 1/2 the crumbled bacon, 1/2 the liquid, and half the cheese. Repeat steps with remaining ingredients.
  • Place in a 350 degree oven for 1 1/2 -2 hours. Cover with aluminum foil if top starts to get to dark.

9 tablespoons butter
9 tablespoons flour

1 cup full cream
