A margarita is a great way to celebrate the arrival of summer (or any season, really). This variation uses gourmet tangerine syrup and muddled citrus and to add a fresh, tart vibe to the classic cocktail.This recipe was originally published in the Orlando Sentinel.

1 lime wedge
2 orange slices, divided
1 1/2 ounce silver tequila, such as avión
1 1/2 ounce orange liqueur, such as combier
1/2 ounce tangerine syrup, such as monin
1/2 ounce orange juice
1/4 ounce grand marnier

Steps:

  • Step 1: In a cocktail shaker, muddle 1 lime wedge and 1 orange slice. Add 1 1/2 ounces silver tequila, 1 1/2 ounces orange liqueur, 1/2 ounce tangerine syrup and 1/2 ounce orange juice.
  • Step 2: Add ice and shake. Strain and pour into an English highball glass or a martini glass with a salted rim.
  • Step 3: On top of cocktail, float 1/4 ounce Grand Marnier. Garnish with 1 orange slice.

2 habanero chiles
4 teaspoons lime zest
1/4 cup lime juice
4 teaspoons lemon zest
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup tangerine juice
1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1 pinch salt
2 crushed cups ice
1 cup reposado tequila
1 cup triple sec

Steps:

  • Toast the chiles over heat or in a dry saute pan until the skin begins to blister. Set aside.
  • Place the first 8 ingredients in a small bowl, covered with plastic film and refrigerate at 2 hours. Strain the mixture. Divide half the ice between 4 to 6 margarita glasses. Pour the citrus chile mix into a large pitcher. Add tequila, triple sec, and remaining crushed ice and stir until combined. Serve immediately.

  • Gather the ingredients.

Steps:

  • Rub the rim of the glass with a wedge of lime and dip the rim into a saucer of fine salt. Place the tequila, lime juice, tangerine juice, orange flavored liqueur, and crushed ice into a shaker. Shake to mix and strain into a glass. Garnish with a wedge of lime on the rim of the glass.

Freshly squeezed tangerine juice
Freshly squeezed lime juice
Ice cubes
Salt, optional

Steps:

  • Combine tequila, orange liqueur, tangerine juice, lime juice, and ice, all to taste, in a blender and blend until smooth. Line rims of glasses with salt, if desired. Divide margaritas among glasses, and serve. To serve margaritas straight up, combine all ingredients, except salt, in a shaker. Strain into glasses and serve.
