My Mom was raised PA Dutch, this is one of many recipe that have been handed down in our family from mother to daughter for many generations.

1 1/2 tsp butter, melted
1 small head red cabbage, thinly sliced
2 tart apples, peeled, cored and chopped
1/4 c apple cider vinegar
1 c red currant jelly
1/4 c water
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp sugar

Steps:

  • 1. Melt butter in a two quart saucepan and add cabbage, apples, cider vinegar, current jelly and water. Mix well.
  • 2. Cover and simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender, about 1 hour.
  • 3. Add salt and sugar, mix and serve.
  • 4. This recipe can be prepared a day ahead , just refrigerate. When ready to use just warm through.

1 onion, diced
1 head red cabbage, cut up
2 tablespoons butter
2 -3 tablespoons vinegar
4 -5 tablespoons sugar
1 -2 apple, peeled and diced

Steps:

  • Saute onions in butter.
  • add cut up cabbage and vinegar.
  • cover and simmer for about 20 to 25 minutes.
  • add just enough sugar to make it sweet and sour tasting.
  • add apples and reheat.
