White Bread image

This is my favourite recipe from the Canadian Mennonite Cookbook and has won many times in local fairs. I usually make at least one batch each week for sandwiches.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 tsp sugar
1/2 c water, warm
1 Tbsp active dry yeast (or package)
5 c water, warm
3/4 c oil
3 Tbsp sugar
1 Tbsp salt
12 c unbleached white flour

Steps:

  • 1. Grease loaf pans.
  • 2. Dissolve 1 tsp sugar in lukewarm water. Sprinkle yeast over liquid and let rise in warm place for about 10 minutes.
  • 3. Add remaining ingredients except flour.
  • 4. Gradually add 1 cup of flour at a time and beat until smooth. Kneed enough flour into mixture to form a stiff smooth elastic dough.
  • 5. Place in greased bowl. Cover and let rise in warm place until double in bulk (1 hour). Punch down and let rise again till double in bulk (1 hour).
  • 6. Punch down again and shape into loaves. Place in greased loaf pans. Cover and let rise till double in bulk (1 hour).
  • 7. Bake @ 350ºF for 30 min. Bake till golden brown and sounding hollow when tapped with finger.
  • 8. Makes five 8x4x3 inch loaf pans * alternative: Replace 3 - 4 cups of the all purpose white flour with whole wheat flour or Robin Hood Nutri Blend flour.
