Unique Brownies image

You'll see how these are unique if you read the instructions! A recipe by Mary Burghardt from the "From the Governor's Pantry" cookbook, Lind House Association in New Ulm, Minnesota, July 1988. The book is dedicated to the many volunteers who had donated their time, talents and money to restore the John Lind home.

3/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
2 egg yolks
2 cups sifted flour
4 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
6 ounces chocolate chips
2 egg whites
3/4 cup brown sugar

Steps:

  • Combine shortening, 1/2 cup brown sugar, white sugar, egg yolks, flour, water, vanilla, and baking soda.
  • Pat into 9 x 13 inch pan.
  • Spread chocolate chips over it.
  • Beat egg white until stiff.
  • Gradually add 3/4 cup brown sugar.
  • Spread over chips.
  • Bake 25 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
