They were crazy for grittes with butter and cheese, but they couldn't find grittes in Alaska - so they would cook up a batch of Cream of Wheat and add butter and cheese. I loved the result and have passed it on to my husband and sons who also love this savory treat...

Steps:
- 1. Using a wire whip, gradually whip cereal into the boiling water. Stir constantly.
- 2. Reduce the heat and allow to boil until thick. Only takes a few minutes.
- 3. Add shredded cheese and butter. Any favorite cheese will do, but I prefer sharp cheddar.
- 4. Serve immediately. Makes two medium size bowls. This recipe multiplies well 3 or 4 times the original.
