Sandwich Essentials: Grilled Cheese - Pizza Style image

This is a fun, easy/peasy sandwich to make with items you probably have in your kitchen. Choose your cheeses, meat, pizza sauce; even the bread, and go for it. Yesterday, I made a bunch of these, put them on a warming tray on a sideboard in the main dining room and announced they were there. Went in there about a hour later and...

Number Of Ingredients 6

PLAN/PURCHASE
2 slice bread, your choice
2 Tbsp mayonnaise, i prefer duke's
2 Tbsp pizza sauce, your favorite, plus more for dipping
2 oz cheese, more on this later
8 - 10 slice pepperonis, or some ground italian sausage (pre cooked)

Steps:

  • 1. PREP/PREPARE
  • 2. You will need a small skillet to make this recipe.
  • 3. Homemade Mayonnaise To be sure, there are some good store-bought mayo's on the market (my all-time favorite is Duke's) If you live in the South, you have probably seen it on the shelves of your local grocer; however, as you travel North, it becomes as scarce as hen's teeth. If you would like to take a stab at making your own (it really is not all that difficult), check out this recipe: https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/sauce-spread/spread/mayonnaise-essentials-faux-duke-s-version.html?r=1 Pizza Sauce If you are looking for a good Italian pizza sauce, check this one out: https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/sauce-spread/other-sauce-spread/italian-essentials-sardinian-pizza-sauce.html?r=2
  • 4. What about the cheese? I used a mix of mozzarella, provolone, and mild colby, you could use any combination you choose; however, because it is supposed to be a "pizza" grilled cheese I think one of the choices should be mozzarella, or provolone.
  • 5. Gather your ingredients (mise en place).
  • 6. Brush 1 tablespoon of the mayonnaise on a slice of bread and lay it mayo-side down into a cold pan. Then brush the top portion of the bread with 1 tablespoon of the pizza sauce, followed by the cheese and pepperonis.
  • 7. Add the second tablespoon of pizza sauce on a side of the other slice of bread and place it, sauce-side down on top of the other slice, and brush the remaining mayo on top.
  • 8. Set pan to medium, and as it cooks, flip it a few times until the cheese is gooey and melty, and the bread toasty brown, a few minutes on each side.
  • 9. PLATE/PRESENT
  • 10. Cut up and serve with some warm pizza sauce for dipping. Enjoy.
  • 11. Keep the faith and keeping cooking.
