SAMBAL GORENG CORNFLAKES image

1 1/2 large onions, minced very fine
2 large cloves garlic, minced
2 tsp sambal
1-2 tsp tomato paste (optional)
1 T peanut, coconut or vegetable oil
3 T white vinegar
3 T gula jawa or brown sugar
3/4 tsp salt
9 oz. cornflakes

Steps:

  • Saute the onion in the oil until it begins to caramelize. Add garlic and sambal (and tomato paste, if using) and continue to saute until very dry and brown. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 250. Add vinegar, sugar and salt to the onion mix, then mix with cornflakes. Spread on 2 baking sheets and bake for half an hour, switching positions midway. Turn off oven and allow to cool with door closed.
