Roman Apple Cake image

I've been making this cake for over 40 years and it is so easy and moist. It's not a "pretty" cake but it is oh so good. A great cake for gatherings, very portable, and not overly sweet and it is always a big hit. I never have any left to bring home.

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 cup(s) sugar
1 1/2 cup(s) flour
1/4 teaspoon(s) salt
1/2 teaspoon(s) baking powder
1 teaspoon(s) baking soda
1/2 cup(s) butter or margarine, softened
1/2 cup(s) milk
1 egg
2 cup(s) apples, peeled and finely chopped
TOPPING:
1/2 cup(s) brown sugar
2 tablespoon(s) butter or margarine, softened
2 teaspoon(s) flour
2 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
1/2 cup(s) nuts, finely chopped

Steps:

  • Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in a large mixing bowl.
  • Blend in sugar, butter/margarine, milk, egg, and apple. Mix on medium speed.
  • Pour into greased 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
  • Cream together all the topping ingredients. Sprinkle over cake batter.
  • Bake at 350° for 45 minutes or until done.
