cake ingredients:
1-1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour
1 cup(s) sugar
1/4 cup(s) hershey's special dark cocoa powder
1 teaspoon(s) baking soda
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
additional cake ingredients:
1 cup(s) cool water
6 tablespoon(s) vegetable oil
1 tablespoon(s) distilled white vinegar 5% acidity
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract
frosting ingredients:
4 tablespoon(s) butter, softened
2 cup(s) powdered sugar
2 tablespoon(s) hershey's special dark cocoa powder
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350° F.
  • Grease the inside of an 8x8-inch square cake pan. Then set pan aside.
  • In a medium size bowl sift together, the cake ingredients, then set the bowl aside.
  • In a measuring cup, which holds 2 cups, combine the water, vegetable oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract.
  • Add liquid ingredients into bowl, and gently stir until there are no lumps. (Stir for about 30 seconds.)
  • Pour into baking pan, and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool the cake completely in the pan, then frost the cake. Sprinkle a few decorative Rainbow Jimmies on top of the frosting. (I then place the frosted cake in the refrigerator so the frosting will firm up.) Then cut the cake, and serve.
  • Additional note: I always cover the cake after I place it in the refrigerator.
