Oatmeal Crispies image

My mother always made these cookies and when I was 10 I wrote the recipe down on a 3 by 5 card and have been making these cookies for 50 years, they never last long. I have tried altering ingredients over the years but they are never the same, and everyone complains. I still have my original card, it is yellow, faded and...

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 c shortening (crisco)
1 c butter or margarine (room temp. softened)
2 c packed brown sugar
2 c granulated sugar
4 eggs, beaten
2 tsp vanilla extract
3 c all purpose flour
1/8 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
6 c oatmeal, uncooked

Steps:

  • 1. Thoroughly cream together shortening and butter
  • 2. add the sugars, eggs and vanilla and mix well
  • 3. mix the flour, salt and baking soda together then add to the wet ingredients, mix together well.
  • 4. add the oatmeal. At this point the batter will be really thick and the best way to do this is with your hands. A little messy maybe but worth it.
  • 5. when everything is mixed good you can add chocolate chips or raisens and or your favorite nuts, there is no measurement for this, whatever and however much you might be in the mood for and remember your still using your hands to mix it in.
  • 6. measure out about a teaspoon of dough, place on cookie sheet about 2 inches apart.
  • 7. cook at 350 degrees for about 10 to 12 minutes.
