Number Of Ingredients 15

1 pkg (1/4 oz.) active dry yeast
1/4 c warm water(110-115 degrees)
3/4 c warm 2% milk(110-115 degrees)
1/3 c sugar
1/3 c shortening
1 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
2 eggs
4 c all purpose flour
1 Tbsp various fillings you prefer, strawberry jam, peach, blackberry, apricot or pie fillings of your choice.
TOPPING:
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese
1/4 c sugar
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

  • 1. Prepare topping: combine cream cheese,1/4 cup sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla and blend thouroughly. Set aside in refrigerator.
  • 2. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add milk, sugar, shortening, salt, nutmeg, eggs and 2 cups of flour. Beat until smooth. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface;knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
  • 3. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. (I use my oven with the oven light on)
  • 4. Punch dough down. divide in half;shape each half into 12 balls. Place 3 inches apart on a greased baking sheets.(I use parchment paper on the baking sheets)Flatten each ball to a 3 inche circle. cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  • 5. Make a depression in the center of each roll;add a rounded tablespoon of cream cheese filling, then a tablespoon of the preferred filling. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire racks. If you prefer to use a meat flavor such as ham or sausage link, just roll meat into the flattened dough and place seam side down.
