Steps:
- Place apples and 1/2 cup sugar in saucepan & simmer, covered for approx. 7 minutes, till apples are translucent. Sprinkle with cinnamon and 1 TBSP flour. Let cool. Pastry: Combine 1/4 cup sugar, flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until it looks like coarse oatmeal. Lightly beat in egg and vanilla and incorporate until a ball forms. Roll 1/2 of this dough out in the bottom of a springform pan. Place cooled apples over the dough, leaving a 1/2 inch around sides of the pan. Mix in oatmeal and chopped nuts with remaining dough and crumble. Drop 1/2 of this in the space between apples and side of pan. Sprinkle remaining crumbs over apples. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup sugar over top of everything. Bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes or until golden. Let cool and cut into wedges.
